Latest Details: Hyundai recently unveiled the HCD-14 concept car at the Detroit North American International Auto Show, and elements of that car can be seen in this Genesis prototype. While aspects of the HCD-14 concept are apparent—such as the headlights and taillights—Hyundai will use a traditional interior design instead of the organically shaped interior of the HCD-14.

Colorado’s Bestop Shares Success of Congressional District Site Visit Program

Summer is a great time to be outdoors in Colorado and, given the favorable conditions, it’s also a great time to be out on the trail. Therefore, it was no surprise when Bestop Inc., a leading supplier of off-road truck and Jeep accessories that provide access to the backcountry, welcomed Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) to its headquarters last July in Broomfield, Colorado. The event included a tour of Bestop’s production and distribution facilities and a detailed briefing session. Rep. Polis also addressed and took questions from Bestop’s employees.

Rep. Polis was elected to represent Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District in 2008. In Washington, Polis serves on the powerful House Rules Committee and the Education and Workforce Committee. Prior to his service in Congress, Polis was elected to the Colorado State Board of Education, where he served for six years. Polis also founded two innovative charter schools during his tenure on the board. Early in his career, he launched Bluemountain.com and Proflowers.com and was named an “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the accounting firm Ernst and Young.

Over the past two years, more than a dozen SEMA-member companies have hosted members of Congress at their facilities. The visits are valuable opportunities for SEMA members to meet with their elected officials in a familiar setting and showcase their products, employees and community presence. SEMA Board of Directors member and Bestop Director of Sales and Marketing Jim Chick shared insights on the program.

“Bestop has been a SEMA member for nearly 40 years, so we viewed the site visit as a great opportunity made possible through our membership,” Chick said. “Bestop had never before hosted an elected official. With Rep. Polis’s heavy business background, he was able to identify with Bestop’s larger concerns for profitability and sustainability.”

Recognizing the company’s involvement in the local economy was also an impor-tant factor.

“Being a Colorado-based manufacturer for more than 59 years, Bestop has a stake in local, state and national political matters,” Chick said. “SEMA’s 2012 Washington Rally prompted us to take action and become better acquainted with our federal legislators. The site visit also allowed executive management to ask pertinent questions on topics that dealt with both our industry and our company, including tax reform, health care and growth incentives. The event was also attended by local Jeep enthusiasts and staff from Restyling magazine as well as members of SEMA and the SEMA Action Network.”

While participants had a chance to tour the facility, the direct personal interaction with a member of Congress was seen as the highlight of the day.

“Due to SEMA’s planning effort, employees and fellow Jeep club members were able to speak personally with Rep. Polis in a venue where he could answer each question thoroughly,” said Chick. “Land-use legislation remains a huge factor in our Jeeping-oriented business, so it only made sense to share our concerns and to hear Rep. Polis’s strategy on preserving land for future off-road enthusiasts. By hosting the site visit, we were able to provide a one-on-one forum to discuss the issues facing our company and industry.”

The Congressional District Site Visit Program is a key component of the SEMA government affairs mission. The best time to host an event is during Congressional “district work periods,” when members of Congress are in their home communities. Many elected officials are actively pursuing opportunities to visit businesses in their districts. SEMA members are encouraged to contact Director of Congressional Affairs Dan Sadowski at dans@SEMA.org to plan an event and take advantage of this unique program.

“Steve McDonald and the SEMA Washington, D.C., staff ensure that SEMA-member interests are well represented in Washington. The SEMA PAC provides the essential resources required for this vital work to be accomplished successfully. That’s why I’m a SEMA PAC President’s Club member.”

The SEMA Data Co-op Is Up and Running… Now What?

Jon WylyWell, now the real fun begins! The SEMA Data Co-op’s (SDC) state-of-the-art data-management system has been up and running for a couple of months. The usual bugs have been shaken out, and we are actively receiving and distributing quality product data from nearly 200 suppliers to a horde of anxious receivers. Sure, we’re still adding new functionality and fine tuning things such as the user interface, documentation and reporting features, but it’s smooth sailing overall.

With the assistance of our expert help desk, participating suppliers continue to build out their data sets, and new receivers are coming forward to take advantage of what will soon be the largest single repository of product data in the industry. This is pretty remarkable if you think about it. Just one year ago, this journey was just getting started, but with the hard work of some dedicated data geeks and a little nudge here and there from yours truly, SEMA has produced a genuine solution for suppliers to manage their product data—a solution that provides suppliers and receivers with hands-on help no matter what their level of expertise, and ensures total ownership of the process and the data at the lowest possible cost. So if you produce or sell automotive specialty parts and you have not yet joined the Co-op, skip to the last paragraph and contact us to get started now!

Now, for all of you who are left—the early adopters, the believers, the savvy business folks who have come to learn how important it is to be in charge of your data destiny—here’s a look at what’s next.

Now, for all of you who are left—the early adopters, the believers, the savvy business folks who have come to learn how important it is to be in charge of your data destiny—here’s a look at what’s next.

In thinking about the end goal of the SDC, which is to enable the selling of more parts, it really makes perfect sense that the next logical step for the Co-op would be to develop a centrally viewable catalog of this growing repository of data.

Allow me to introduce you to SEMA Search.

My good friend and SDC co-conspirator Bob Moore calls it a “24/7 virtual SEMA Show.” I call it the most comprehensive, easy-to-use electronic catalog and reference source for the specialty parts market. Either way, we’re talking about a powerful website that uses all of the rich, complete data being gathered in the SDC to provide a single source for all the latest product information, images, videos, installation instructions and more to salespeople throughout the industry. If that works out well—and we know it will—a version viewable by consumers could be right behind it.

Since the SDC system, by design, allows suppliers to create a data record on new products at any time and publish that data immediately, the time to market for new-product releases will be measured in hours, not weeks or months. Once in the repository, that data will go live on SEMA Search and provide instant visibility to the marketplace. No more time lags waiting for systems to catch up or sporadic data deliveries to be made. The SEMA Data Co-op operates at the speed of the supplier, so new products can be presented to their customers and viewable on SEMA Search literally within 24 hours of release!

Watch for a launch of SEMA Search in August of this year, if all goes according to plan. And, since most good ideas tend to stimulate more good ideas, we’ll talk next month about another upcoming phase in information availability: Data on Demand.

To learn more about how you can take control of your product data and manage it at the lowest possible cost, contact SEMA Data Co-op Director of Membership Jim Graven via e-mail at jimg@SEMAdatacoop.org or by phone at 888-958-6698 x4.
