SEMA council and network leaders.

Nominations for a Select Committee seat on one of SEMA's councils and professional networks are now open. Do you have a business challenge that goes beyond the walls of your shop? See a change in the market that needs to be addressed? Have an idea but need some industry muscle to make it happen? If so, it may be time for you to volunteer as an industry leader and make your voice heard.

The Select Committee serves as the volunteer leadership body for the entire membership of a specific council or network. These volunteers are in tune with their market and have the drive needed to influence change. Elected volunteers are entrusted to direct SEMA resources toward building solutions to matters facing the industry, benefits and opportunities that help companies succeed and prosper.

There are currently 10 council and network groups within SEMA, and each represents a collection of members who share a common business purpose or market segment. Councils work to identify related business goals, issues and challenges for member companies that require a special focus by the association, while the professional networks are free for all employees of SEMA-member companies.

Find out who is currently involved in SEMA's councils and networks and follow the link to the group that supports your interests.

Get started now by using the online council nominations form to nominate yourself or another SEMA-member company employee. It's quick and easy to complete, and no printing or faxing is required. All nominations must be received by 5:00 p.m. (PDT), March 21, 2014.

For more information about SEMA's councils and networks or the nomination and election process, contact Senior Council Coordinator Gina Ledesma at ginal@sema.org.

Leaders of the House Ways and Means Committee, the primary tax-writing committee in Congress, have released recommendations for rewriting the American tax code. The “Tax Reform Act of 2014” is an ambitious legislative package intended to simplify both the corporate and individual tax codes. Last year, the committee convened 11 separate bipartisan “tax reform working groups” to help craft the recommendations. Each group focused on a different issue, including manufacturing, energy, income and tax distribution and small business/pass-throughs. The working groups obtained input from stakeholders, academics, the general public and other members of Congress.

Among the most important reforms include a top corporate tax rate of 25% to be phased in over five years, a permanent research and development (R&D) tax credit, making permanent enhanced Section 179 expensing for small businesses, a modified capital cost recovery system, a repeal of the corporate alternative minimum tax (AMT) and a repeal of “last in, first out” (LIFO) rules with transition rules. The proposals are revenue neutral, meaning that they should not raise taxes or produce deficits.

While the proposals include several SEMA-supported provisions, prospects for immediate consideration by Congress are weak. Key House and Senate leaders indicated that Congress will not take up tax reform legislation before the November election. Nevertheless, ongoing discussion is expected, and at some point before the election, Congress is expected to address tax provisions that expired in 2013, such as the R&D tax credit.
