SEMA Member News—July 2019

Rob Fisher Takes the Helm and Charts a Forward Path

Rob FisherRob Fisher from will be taking over as Chair of MPMC, two years earlier in his current position.

In today’s ever-evolving market, it’s critical that SEMA members have a chance to weigh in on issues that influence and impact the specialty-equipment market, and one of the most effective ways to have a voice is through participation in a SEMA council. For companies engaged in the motorsports segment, the Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council (MPMC) provides that opportunity, but the success of any SEMA council or network is reliant on volunteers—industry pros who raise their hands and express their willingness to become actively involved. That description neatly fits Rob Fisher.

A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, Fisher holds a degree in professional writing and graphics as well as in business administration. A career media pro with a passion for motorsports, he previously held key positions with Source Interlink Media/The Enthusiast Network, during which time he regularly attended the MPMC Media Trade Conference.

That, in turn, sparked a desire to become involved in MPMC. As a media guy, Fisher didn’t meet the criteria as a manufacturer of performance parts used in sanctioned racing applications, but that changed when he joined E3 Spark Plugs as vice president of motorsports and marketing.

In 2016, Fisher tossed his hat into the ring and was elected to the council’s select committee. Reelected last year and chosen to serve as the chair-elect, Fisher recently leapfrogged over the traditional council leadership progression to jump into the chairmanship with both feet.

SEMA Member News recently caught up with Fisher to gain insights into his thoughts on volunteering and his goals and aspirations for MPMC and the motorsports industry.

SEMA Member News: Tell us how you became involved in MPMC and vaulted into the role of council chair.

Rob Fisher: I had always gone to the media conference as a media guy. I was familiar with the council because of that conference. I thought that I’d love to be part of MPMC if there were ever a time that I wasn’t working for the media. Lo and behold, I was eligible to run for the select committee when E3 Spark Plugs decided to build a racing division.

When I went through the election process, I thought I would do a term on the select committee and then run for chair-elect. When I won a second term, I ran for chair-elect. I was supposed to be the chair-elect for two years beginning in July. But with our (incoming) chair leaving to meet work obligations, there was a hole. So I raised my hand and stepped up. It wasn’t “Oh, no, I need more time.” My mentality is that if we’re going to do something, just do it.

SMN: You’ve been in the unique position of attending the trade conference as a media representative and as a participating manufacturer. What are your thoughts regarding the conference?

RF: When I was media, the conference was always one of my favorite events because I could get a year’s worth of stories in just a few days. Sitting on the other side, to get a year’s worth of editorial out of those meetings with the media is so valuable for the companies that are there. But we’re also looking at what we’ve already established as a foundation and building upon that. We did a push this year to encourage more media to come to the conference. There were 22 new media, all from the digital realm.

The opportunity for MPMC members lies in tapping into that group of people. With the consolidation in the print industry, we have to continue to morph the conference into something that will continue to be valuable not just currently but also five years down the road.

SMN: MPMC offers its members other resources. What can you tell us about those initiatives?

RF: Speaking from the outside looking in, people who weren’t involved in the council tended to identify MPMC as the trade conference. They didn’t realize that MPMC is more than that.

The first thing we did was put together this great “MPMC Business Guidelines Manual,” and it has helped a lot members. But we recognized that the industry is made up of small businesses that don’t typically have a ton of resources. When we updated the manual, we released it last year to everybody—any SEMA manufacturer—and we’ve gotten a lot of great feedback.

We continue to look at how we can help the membership. We’ve started doing seminars at the PRI Trade Show, and we’re planning an event for this year. We’re also looking at a PRI membership drive because we can build different programs through new membership.

SMN: SEMA held a council leadership retreat earlier this year. What was your impression and was it helpful in preparing for your new role?

RF: I thought it was super valuable—very conducive to collaborative meetings and conversations with people you don’t normally interact with. Any time you get into collaborative work environments and strategic brainstorming, seeing what different councils are doing and what your council could be doing is very valuable.

In our council’s case, we’re all executive level, so you have a certain methodology as to how you manage people and projects. The biggest learning experience for me was seeing firsthand how you interact with SEMA as an organization. It’s a different relationship from the organizational hierarchy structure that you find in a for-profit company.

SMN: Looking down the road, what do you see lying ahead for MPMC?

RF: Changes are coming to our industry, both governmentally and from the OEMs. More technically advanced powertrains, hybrid solutions and driverless cars will significantly impact our industry and our businesses. So making sure that MPMC is strong, relevant and a forward-thinking council now and in the future is my big focus.

As chairman, I’ll continue to build on the great work that’s been done. We have a very strong select committee, with some old members and some new members. You’ll see a lot of good things come out of MPMC in the next four to six years. I’m excited.

Powersports Parts and Accessories

2018 SEMA Show New Product Offerings for Motorcycles, UTVs and More

Traditionally dominated by motorcycles, the powersports segment is expanding dynamically, thanks to the explosive popularity of side-by-sides, aka utility task vehicles (UTVs). The latter have brought off-roading enjoyment to a mostly family-oriented audience that eyes modifications focused on utility, performance and safety. But whatever the vehicle of choice, there were 416 powersports-related items showcased at the 2018 SEMA Show to cover them all. They ran the gamut from engine performance and suspension enhancements to batteries, towing and recovery gear, and appearance accessories. Given that the powersports category has tremendous crossover to other Show segments, such as mobile electronics (think sound systems and lighting) and trucks, SUVs and off-roading, the following pages represent a glimpse into the many opportunities available for growing your business.

Collision Repair & Refinish Products

The Latest Products for Repairing and Refurbishing From the 2018 SEMA Show

It may be the one segment of the automotive aftermarket that no enthusiast ever really wants to get too acquainted with, but it’s one of the most essential and one of the most universally patronized. Specifically, it’s the collision-repair sector—the companies and shops that manufacture and apply the paints, finishes and replacement bodywork that can transform a dinged-up road casualty into a like-new machine.

While the proliferation of various OE safety technologies has made production cars safer than ever to drive, accidents will happen—and perhaps because of that, the collision-repair industry remains a robust market overall, with annual revenues of $38.5 billion forecast by 2020, according to industry trade publication Body
Shop Business.

As advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have assumed a greater prominence on OE production platforms, the collision repair segment has needed to adapt and refine its best practices to accommodate the changes. Proper scanning, recalibrating and sensor location are of greater importance than ever, and more collision-repair companies are working overtime to keep abreast of, and stay within, often-complex OE compliance mandates.

For industry members seeking guidance, resources such the SEMA Show’s Education Sessions can provide an assist. Both the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists offer instructional seminars throughout Show week. Visit www.SEMAShow.com/education for additional information.

What follows here are entries that exhibited at the 2018 SEMA Show New Products Showcase.

SEMA News—July 2019

NEW PRODUCTS

By Douglas McColloch

HRIA to Host Education Days at NSRA Nationals

HRIA Education DaysMark your calendars! HRIA Education Days will be coming back August 1–2.

From its early days as the Street Rod Marketing Alliance (SRMA) to what is now the Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA), the hot-rod industry has been a formidable force within the specialty-equipment market. In keeping with its efforts to provide business-building resources, the council has always ranked education as a top priority. Nowhere is the focus on learning experiences more in evidence than at the National Street Rod Association (NSRA) Street Rod Nationals.

Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, the NSRA Nationals will take over the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville the first week in August, and HRIA Education Days will kick off the event with two days of high-powered sessions on August 1 and 2.

But Louisville isn’t the council’s first foray into educational programming. One of the earliest venues to host industry-centric seminars was the Hotrod & Restoration Trade Show, produced jointly in the ’90s by SEMA, SRMA and the Automotive Restoration Market Organization. A few years later, Jim and Debbie Lewis launched the Hotrod & Restoration Trade Show, where HRIA presented Education & Training Day sessions over the course of several years. After that show was twice sold, HRIA searched for a more suitable locale.

“From the beginning, our seminars were strictly business to business,” recalled Tammy Holland, who will assume the role of immediate past chair of HRIA in July. “That’s why we attended the Hotrod & Restoration Trade Show. That was our audience. We stuck around for a while after it was sold, but the show was totally different, and the turnout wasn’t the same. So that’s when we made the decision to try the Detroit Autorama.”

When, after two years, the Autorama proved to be disappointing, HRIA again searched for the right fit.

“That’s when we decided to try the Louisville Nationals, to see what would happen and try get it back to where it used to be,” Holland said. “NSRA has been kind enough to open its arms and welcome us to the Nationals to host our Education Days. The response has been overwhelming, and each year our program continues to grow.”

Expanding the Format, Finding a Home

HRIA Education DaysHRIA Education Days are right around the corner.

When making the move to Louisville in 2016, HRIA made some important decisions. As a first step, the council established clear-cut criteria for speaker participation.

“We get a lot of requests from people who want to speak,” Holland said. “HRIA Education Days are open and free to anyone who attends the Nationals, but we do have speaker requirements. You have to be a member of HRIA, and because NSRA has been totally accommodating, you also have to be an exhibitor at the Nationals.”

The changes didn’t stop there. In addition to opening the sessions to the public along with industry folks, HRIA also expanded the program’s footprint.

“When we moved to the Nationals, it was the first time the seminars were open to the public,” Holland said. “It was so much of a success that we expanded to two days instead of trying to cram everything into one day.”

With a lineup of nearly a dozen sessions spread out over two days, attendees will be exposed to a wide range of technical topics at this year’s events. The roster of this year’s presenting companies reads like a hot-rod industry who’s who.

For instance, Bowler Transmission will present “Shift into Overdrive and Enjoy Your Hot Rod,” while Flaming River will tackle “Steering You in the Right Direction,” and HushMat will address “Solutions for Heat and Noise: Heat Is the Enemy of Speed, Performance and Comfort.”

Other sessions include “Wiring 101: Tips and Tricks for a Successful Wiring Install,” presented by Ron Francis Wiring; “The Basics of Performance Air Conditioning,” presented by Vintage Air; “Brake System Basics,” presented by Wilwood, and the list goes on.

“NSRA has truly welcomed HRIA,” Holland said. “It has embraced us, and each year that we go there, our program grows, so we’re really excited. We feel that we have finally found a home for HRIA Education Days.”

Maintaining Steady Growth Through a Destination Retail Strategy

Del Amo Motorsports
Del Amo Motorsports’ original location is housed in a 45,000-sq.-ft. facility in Redondo Beach, California.

Del Amo Motorsports’ humble beginnings can be traced back to 1985 in a 6,000-sq.-ft. facility in Redondo Beach, California, offering a single product line. The company now features multiple product offerings across a wide spectrum of machines in four locations throughout Southern California, with the original one now encompassing 45,000 sq. ft.

SEMA News spoke with Claudia Perez, operations manager for Del Amo Motorsports, to get her take on how the business has maintained its success and grown over the past three-and-a-half decades.

SEMA News: Who is your target market and demographic?

Claudia Perez: For the most part, we cater to motorcycle and sport-bike riders between the ages of 18 and 35. Our locations are family-oriented. We have a wide range of product offerings, including dirt bikes, side-by-sides, watercraft and enduro touring. Our demographic seems to have changed a bit as we expanded south to Santa Ana and Chula Vista, California.

SN: How has the business grown over the years?

Claudia Perez
Claudia Perez started with the company 10 years ago as a general manager of the Long Beach, California, location and is now the operations manager.

CP: Since the company’s inception in 1985, we’ve added three locations (Santa Ana, Long Beach and Chula Vista) to the original one in Redondo Beach. We started out offering only the Suzuki brand of motorcycles. We have since expanded to carry Kawasaki, Yamaha, KTM, Can-Am, Spyder, Ducati, Polaris, Honda, Vanderhall, Triumph and Sea-Doo personal watercraft. Three of our locations are destination stores where customers bring in their bikes, hang out and talk to other customers.

We’ve gone from having 60 employees to about 250 at all four locations. By 2002, we had outgrown our original location, so we moved to a 25,000-sq.-ft. location, also in Redondo Beach. We expanded to 35,000 sq. ft. when we added KTM to our product line shortly after the move in 2002. In 2010, we expanded our parts and accessories department to 10,000 sq. ft.,
bringing the total size of our facility to 45,000 sq. ft.

Employees
According to Perez, it’s crucial to train her staff to understand the industry’s ever-changing compliance issues so they can best serve customers.

SN: What’s been the toughest challenge you’ve faced?

CP: Compliance regulations in California—from employee and advertising practices to emissions, the California Air Resources Board, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and vehicle accessibility—are the toughest obstacles we’ve had to face. The laws are some of the toughest in the country, and it’s hard to keep up because they change so fast. It’s green sticker, now it’s red sticker; you can ride, now you can’t ride; it’s a two-stroke, and now it’s a four-stroke. For street riders, exhaust is legal, now it’s not legal. One day it’s one thing, and the next day it’s another.

It’s tough to manage compliance, including Prop 65 regarding lead and chemicals, when you also have to manage a business. We have to get the whole team working together, ensure that we have a good process for implementing new regulations, and train everyone on the subject so they understand the importance of complying and the ramifications if we don’t.

Show floor
In the beginning, the company’s only product line was Suzuki motorcycles. Product offerings now include Kawasaki, Yamaha, KTM, Can-Am, Spyder, Ducati, Polaris, Honda, Vanderhall, Triumph and Sea-Doo personal watercraft.

SN: What has been one of your most rewarding successes, and what risks has the company taken along the way?

CP: Growing the team to management levels has been successful for us. Some employees started in accounts payable, DMV or cashiering, and now they’re in management positions. That’s rewarding for us. I started as a general manager of our Long Beach location 10 years ago.

Opening new locations is always a risk we’ve taken, because you never know how that market is going to work and if the employees are going to stay.

SN: What draws customers to your store, and how do you ensure repeat business?

CP: Our stores are beautiful. Long Beach is a little smaller, but we try to make the other three stores destination shops with merchandise. We work with our team to engage the customers. Most of our employees ride and are powersports enthusiasts. They’re involved in bike nights, track days and desert racing, which helps customers feel that they are working with somebody who shares their passion.

SN: What factors do you attribute your success to?

CP: Our team makes a huge difference and has been instrumental in maintaining our success. You can find motorcycle builders anywhere, but it’s the people who make it all happen because of their willingness to help the customer and do whatever it takes to make the customers’ dreams come true. Understand that we’re not just selling a product; we’re selling a lifestyle.

Del Amo
The retailer has hosted several events, including parking-lot sales featuring shows by Fitz Army and stunt riders Tony Carbajal and Jason Britton.

SN: What differentiates you from competitors?

CP: Our stores are well maintained, and we share inventory with all four locations, so if a customer needs something, we probably have it in one of our locations.

SN: How do you market the company?

CP: We market the company online through social media and email blasts. We host a lot of in-store events. Every week, there’s something going on in at least one of our stores that we promote through social media. They include parking-lot sales, where the guys from Fitz Army come out and do a show. We’ve had stunt riders Tony Carbajal and Jason Britton come out. We bring in powersports athletes and offer food, raffles and bike giveaways to show appreciation to our customers.

SN: How do you train staff to best serve the company?

Executive Summary

Owners: Pablo Veglia and Scott King.

  • Established in 1985.
  • Facility size: 45,000 sq. ft.
  • Number of employees: 250
  • Locations: Redondo Beach, Santa Ana, Long Beach, Chula Vista.
  • Maintaining compliance in the face of constantly changing laws while managing a business is Operations Manager Claudia Perez’s number-one challenge.

CP: Training our staff to best serve the business comes from correct onboarding. Upon hire, we provide employees with the tools, resources and clear expectations of their jobs. If we have someone who is capable and knowledgeable, we do the rest by teaching them the key items we would like them to focus on to be successful.

We have a full-service department at each of our locations with certified technicians for all the brands we carry. We do product installations for our side-by-side customers, including cages, seats, backrests, stereo systems, doors, seatbelts, etc.

SN: What are your plans for future growth?

CP: We would like to continue adding more locations. It’s hard to say where the business is headed, though, because with motorcycles and powersports, they’re not a necessity; they’re a luxury. The economy, climate, weather and job availability have a large impact on our industry, but for now we focus on what we can control and
keep going.

SN: What advice would you offer a retailer starting out in the market?

CP: Focus on people. I visit a lot of retailers to see how they’re doing. Customer service is not what it used to be. Mobile technology is great for a lot of things, but people have lost their touch for engaging in conversation with others.
