wrap like a king
Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions has announced that the global 2017 “Wrap Like a King” winner was Lei’d Low by Nick Caminiti (right), a car-wrap installer at Exotic Graphix from Australia, Tuesday, November 1, at the 2017 SEMA Show. Caminiti competed against 159 other installers from 19 countries to earn a second consecutive title of “King of the Wrap World.”

Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions has announced that “Lei’d Low” by Nick Caminiti, car-wrap installer at Exotic Graphix from Australia, was named the King of the Wrap World in the “Wrap Like a King” Challenge at the 2017 SEMA Show. Caminiti competed against 159 other installers from 19 countries to earn the title of “King of the Wrap World” for 2017.

“Winning a second Wrap Like a King title in a row is an incredible feeling, and we’re truly honored to accept the title of King of the Wrap World from Avery Dennison,” said Caminiti. “We knew the field would be gunning for the Exotic Graphix team after our success last year, but we put in the work and came out on top against a really accomplished field.”

Caminiti used Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film Diamond Silver and MPI 1105 with DOL 6460 overlaminate to complete his entry in the Challenge. Lei’d Low is a ’63 Volkswagen Beetle with a Hawaiian surf theme. It features three-dimensional, embossed wood effects created with vinyl film, and a fully templated vinyl wrap that replicates a ’60s-inspired paint job. Other points of interest include a wrapped steering wheel, a holographic visor and custom offset wheels.

A panel of international industry judges chose the King of the Wrap World, as well as Regional Wrap Kings and the first-ever Continent Wrap Kings from North America, Europe, North Asia and Australia and New Zealand. The 2017 Challenge judges include Justin Pate, Molly Waters, Myles Kovacs, Peter Wright, Jun Kinoshita, Stefan Ude, Anders Prates and Jurriaan de Vries.

“All of the region- and continent-winning wraps in 2017 took extraordinary skill, so the ultimate king had to be decided by a very slim margin,” said Peter Wright, Wrap Like a King judge and technical marketing manager, Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions, Australia/New Zealand. “The craftsmanship that we saw from the entirety of this year’s field was the most impressive yet, and our expectations will only continue to grow with the number of talented installers there are across the world.”

The judges evaluated 159 total submissions based on the criteria of visual transformation (difference between the before and after pictures submitted); quality and skill level of installation; overall public look, appeal and uniqueness of the design.

Caminiti’s King of the Wrap World prize package includes a three-night stay in Las Vegas to attend the SEMA Show, a 67-in. Race Ramp and Wrap Like a King swag. In addition, he will receive a $1,000 cash prize, a King of the Wrap World trophy and almost $1,000 worth of marketing support from Avery Dennison, including Facebook ads, exposure on the Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions website and a print ad in a trade-show publication. The entire King of the Wrap World extended prize package is valued at almost $5,000.

(From left) Alan Batey, president, GM North America; Judy Curran, director, planning & strategy-vehicle components and systems, Ford Motor Co.; and Pietro Gorlier, head of parts and service, MOPAR, FCA, accepted the awards for their companies.

The top-trending vehicle models in five categories were announced yesterday at the 2017 SEMA Show. Magnatude Roadster
This 1932 Muroc roadster was built for the late Jerry Magnuson, who bought a fendered Muroc Roadster from Kugel Komponents, primarily using it as a test vehicle for his successful Magnacharger supercharger program.

A customized 1932 Muroc roadster, "Magnatude," is on display in the Eaton Booth at the 2017 SEMA Show. Magnatude may be best remembered as the car that was named the 2010 Goodguys Street Rod d'Elegance.

The car was built for the late Jerry Magnuson, who bought a fendered Muroc Roadster from Kugel Komponents, primarily using it as a test vehicle for his successful Magnacharger supercharger program. He made a few upgrades, such as hidden headlights in the front fenders and an engine blower with built-in inner-cooler. When it came time to finish the vehicle, Magnuson contacted Foose Design.

At Foose, the vehicle had its body smoothed and aligned, and the suspension components and rearend were reshaped. Foose designed custom one-off wheels and a two-tone butterscotch and champagne paint scheme. Jim Griffin installed the Foose-designed interior, and all new custom trim was added. Signature styling pieces, including the pedals, interior door panels and gauges, all feature Muroc badging.

Murocs were steel-bodied rollers with independent suspensions that were made available for sale by Kugel Komponents. Loosely based on the Boydster II, Chip Foose and hot-rod illustrator Thom Taylor worked on the original Muroc body design. The bodies were fabricated by Marcel DeLay of Marcel's Custom Metal in Corona, California. Chip and Kugel designed the frames and Kugel component parts can be found throughout the vehicle. Only 20 total production vehicles were produced, 10 with fenders and 10 without.
