 3D Printer SEMA Garage
Using the SEMA Garage’s new 3D printer, members are able to print functional prototypes in up to nine different materials as large as 16x14x16 in.

SEMA-member manufacturers now have access to a new, upgraded 3D printer that produces larger and more accurate prototypes than the machine previously available through the SEMA Garage.

Resembling a vending machine that dispenses soft drinks, the new Fortus 450mc is actually the preeminent model on the market. It features cutting-edge technology and produces physical products (or prototypes) using computer-aided design (CAD) files. Products can be produced as large as 406x355x406 mm (16x14x16 in.) with accuracy within plus or minus .005 in., in nine standard, engineering and high-performance thermoplastics.

SEMA offers 3D printing at a deeply discounted rate for members, starting at $12 per square inch. The printer will be demonstrated live during the PWA Kickoff Reception taking place at the SEMA Garage, Sunday, August 30. All SEMA-member manufacturers are invited to attend the event, where the renovated SEMA Garage will be unveiled. Attendees will be able to see and learn how the newly upgraded emissions lab, 3D scanner, photo studio and training center are available to help manufacturers develop products faster, more accurately and less expensively.

To attend the event or to learn more about the SEMA Garage, contact Rachael Salazar at rachaels@sema.org or 909-978-6728.

The 2015 PWA Conference Kickoff will include tours of the 15,000-sq.-ft. SEMA Garage facility and demonstrations of new, upgraded equipment that cuts product development time by more than 50%.

All SEMA manufacturers are invited to join the Performance Warehouse Association (PWA) for the PWA Conference Kickoff, where the newly remodeled SEMA Garage will make its formal debut.

Taking place at the SEMA Garage in Diamond Bar, California, on Sunday, August 30, from 6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., the 2015 PWA Conference Kickoff will include tours of the 15,000-sq.-ft. facility and demonstrations of new and upgraded equipment that cuts product development time by more than 50%.

“We’re excited to host the PWA Conference Kickoff and are looking forward to sharing the new equipment and resources that are available through the SEMA Garage,” said Mike Spagnola, SEMA vice president of OEM and product development programs. “Since the SEMA Garage opened less than two years ago, it has served as a valuable resource to help hundreds of manufacturers with their product development. With the new equipment now available, we hope to help even more members.”

Those who attended the SEMA Garage Open House event last summer will hardly recognize the facility. It has been completely remodeled and features an all-new emissions lab, an upgraded 3D scanner and 3D printer, a cutting-edge training center and more.

During the PWA event, participants will tour the facility and watch equipment demonstrations. Expert SEMA staff will also be on hand to discuss how 3D printing and scanning works, and answer questions on how to navigate the often confusing and arduous emissions-certification process.

Masato Kawabata Wins Formula DRIFT World Championship at Fuji International Speedway

Formula DRIFT Japan presented by G-Shock entered Fuji International Speedway for the fifth round of the inaugural Formula DRIFT World Championship. Masato Kawabata in the Team Toyo Tires Drift/Trust Racing Nissan 35RX GTR took the event victory and Aurimas Bakchis led the Formula Drift World Championship with a second-place finish.

Formula DRIFT Japan at Fuji Speedway was the first world championship round outside of the United States. The semi-finals pitted Tadahiro Fukada in his RC-ART Dreamteam with Falken Toyota Mark II against Bakchis in his ARK Performance/Feal Suspension/Nitto Tire Hyundai Genesis Coupe with Bakchis edging out Fukada to head into the finals. No. 1 qualifier Kawabata in his Team Toyo Tire Drift/Trust Racing Nissan 35RX GTR defeated Masao Suenaga in his RE Amemiya Mazda RX-7 to face Bakchis in the finals. The final head-to-head battle between Bakchis and Kawabata came to an early end as Bakchis’s motor gave on the second run and was not able to maintain drift. This gave Kawabata his perfect weekend by qualifying first and winning the competition.

The 2015 Formula DRIFT season will continue to Round 5: Throwdown, July 24–25, 2015, at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington.

 mustang

One of the several new appearance packages introduced to keep Mustang attention up in the wake of the redesigned Chevy Camaro, the ’16 California Special (CS) is a GT with some retro takes from the first-generation Mustang.

All CS-equipped cars get 19-in. wheels with black-painted inserts. They will also be identified by a special faux gas cap in the trunklid, reminiscent of the original Mustangs. There's also a new black painted rear spoiler that stands much taller than any Mustangs in recent memory, sort of a ’90s throwback. Up front, there's a grille that's also special to the CS with a smaller pony badge off-centered.

Inside, the CS gets black leather-suede seats with red contrasting stitching and door panel inserts and carpeting to match that color scheme.

The CS will go on sale later this summer for the ’16 model year.
