The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has finalized significant updates to its consumer-facing 5-Star Safety Ratings program, a pivotal action designed to improve safety on our nation's roads by incorporating new advanced driver assistance technologies, adding a crashworthiness pedestrian protection program, and setting a roadmap for future program changes over the next 10 years.

The updated 5-Star Safety Ratings program—known as the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)—emphasizes several new and emerging safety technologies and vehicle safety features designed to help protect people both inside and outside a vehicle. The safety update was included as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. 

"This action today is another important step toward addressing the crisis on our roads and achieving the Department's ambitious, long-term goal of zero road fatalities," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. "Like our move earlier this year to make automatic emergency braking standard on new passenger cars and light trucks, these changes to the 5-Star Safety Ratings will speed up adoption of technologies that reduce the frequency and severity of crashes while helping consumers make informed decisions about buying a new car."

Notable changes to the program provided by this update include:

• The addition of four advanced driver assistance technologies that will enhance crash-avoidance safety: pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, blind spot warning and blind spot intervention.
• Updated and strengthened testing procedures and performance criteria for advanced driver assistance technologies that are already included in NCAP, such as automatic emergency braking. 
• The addition of a crashworthiness pedestrian protection program to evaluate the ability of a vehicle's front end to mitigate pedestrian injuries and fatalities in vehicle-to-pedestrian impacts.
• Midterm and long-term roadmaps to accommodate future updates amid ongoing research and technological advancements in vehicle safety, including crash avoidance and crashworthiness improvements to protect bicyclists and motorcyclists and an updated rating system.

"Our goal with NHTSA's 5-Star Safety Ratings program has always been to help consumers choose safer vehicles and to encourage manufacturers to improve vehicle safety," NHTSA Chief Counsel Adam Raviv said. "With these NCAP updates, we're ensuring consumers have more useful and relevant information on the latest safety technologies and that the program keeps up with the pace of technological change and innovation."

An updated NCAP is a key component of the Department's National Roadway Safety Strategy. NCAP is NHTSA's flagship consumer information program for evaluating vehicle safety. The program evaluates how well vehicles perform in various crash tests, including rollover risk, and provides an objective rating on a five-star scale to help consumers make an informed decision when buying a vehicle.

The SEMA Truck & Off-Road Alliance (TORA) named Ernie's Custom Shop as the council's newest member spotlight company. Get to know their story in the SEMA News interview with Ernie Vole, Ernie's Custom Shop's owner, below. 

SEMA News: Tell us the story of Ernie's Custom Shop. How did the company start?  

Ernie Vole: In 2010, Rok Industry, now known as Ernie's Custom Shop (ECS), began designing and building themed vehicles for corporate companies and events. 

In 2011, we built and designed a truck that was on display for the SEMA Show that year and it was a huge hit. It was a unique build--a Ford F-350 standard cab where we cut the frame and converted it to a short bed. This build brought us a lot of attention, and before we knew it, we were receiving lots of requests from local residents for custom builds and vehicle modifications. 

Since then, we have slowly grown to be a tiny-but-mighty shop for the Chicagoland area, and we have continued to build SEMA Show vehicles every year since.

SN: What's going on these days? What projects are you most excited about? 

EV: Every day we are busy with customer upgrades, modifications and full custom builds. There is never a dull moment in the shop and we like it that way. We had three vehicles go to the SEMA Show in 2024:  

• A custom Jeep Gladiator on tracks.  
• A custom, three-row Jeep Wrangler JL on 42-in. tires. 
• A '97 two-door Jeep Wrangler TJ.

Did we mention that this Jeep is a right-hand-drive manual and was recovered from the jungles of Okinawa, Japan? 

SN: What's the best piece of advice you have for professionals getting started in the aftermarket? 

EV: At one point, we were that kid looking at cool rides. We all had dreams. Shoot for those dreams, and never grow up!

David Speicher has joined SEMA as chief technology officer (CTO), reporting to SEMA President and CEO Mike Spagnola. He will be based at the association's Diamond Bar, California, headquarters.

Speicher brings more than 20 years of experience developing and applying strategy to technology decision-making, focusing on process automation, system optimization, software development and infrastructure design. He has served in a variety of leadership roles, including CTO, senior director of information systems and chief systems engineer.

"Bringing David on as our chief technology officer marks a pivotal step in SEMA's commitment to modernization and innovation," said SEMA President and CEO Mike Spagnola. "His extensive background in transforming legacy systems into agile, scalable platforms aligns perfectly with our vision for growth and operational excellence. As our first CTO, David will drive our technology strategy forward, setting the stage for new advancements that will enhance our services and bring exceptional value to our members."

Speicher joins SEMA from Vital Incite where, as CTO, he completely revamped the product infrastructure, developed a multi-regional disaster recovery solution and increased web app query times tenfold for clients.

In his new role, Speicher is responsible for creating and implementing a forward-looking technology strategy that aligns with business objectives, driving sustainable growth and maintaining a competitive edge, while bringing SEMA's technology infrastructure up-to-date and ensuring technology initiatives are aligned with overall business strategies and goals.

"I'm thrilled to join SEMA and dive into the vibrant automotive aftermarket industry," said Speicher. "This industry is all about innovation and that's up my alley. I'm eager to leverage technology to help our association drive forward. Together, we'll build a foundation that not only supports our members today but also positions us for sustained growth and resilience in an ever-evolving market."

In 2016 and again in 2020, Speicher was named Indianapolis Business Journal's CTO of the Year for non-profit organizations and has been a speaker at MHCA, Open Minds, INSPN keynote, Indiana Chamber of Commerce and Google Road Show. He was also named one of Indianapolis' Most Pivotal Leaders in 2020.

A native of Indiana, Speicher is a graduate of Purdue University, West Lafayette, with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer and electrical engineering technology. He and his wife, Kristen, have two sons.

The SEMA Businesswomen's Network (SBN) has named Lauren McCullough, CEO of Tromml, as the network's newest #SheIsSEMA spotlight member. 

Get to know McCullough in her interview with SEMA News below. 

SEMA: How many years have you been with your current company and what do you enjoy most about working there?

Lauren McCullough: One and a half years. I enjoy working directly with manufacturers and retailers in the industry looking for ways to elevate their company's performance. As a result of what we do, we end up working with innovative folks who are ready to take the next step, so we get tons of great energy!

SEMA: What is the most challenging part of running your business or job?

LM: Growing and leading a company is always challenging. We have to make sure we have a solid product that constantly provides value to our customers while building a strong team and culture. It's rewarding, but wearing a lot of hats can get exhausting.

SEMA: How many years have you been in the industry and what was your first industry job?

LM: Five. Director of growth at another industry software.

SEMA: What are three qualities that got you to where you are today? How have these qualities benefited you?

LM: Grit: when things get hard, it's important to persevere.

Innovation: I am always looking for a new way to solve a new challenge.

Integrity: I always focus on doing the right thing by my team and customers, which has allowed me to form lasting relationships.

SEMA: Being a woman in the industry, what have been your biggest challenges and accomplishments?

LM: Often when I meet new people, they expect I "don't know what I am doing," which can be a challenge when growing a new business. However, it's forced me to listen closely and always be at the top of my game, which is what allowed me to found my own company.

SEMA: Who are your role models or mentors in the industry?

LM: I am still forming specific industry mentors, which is why I am excited to join SBN!

SEMA: What is the best career advice you have received?

LM: Some of the best career advice I received was around the importance of long-term thinking and fostering relationships. Early on, it can be easy to get lost in just "checking a box," but it's important we focus on our why and who we are serving, as we have a long career ahead of us.

SEMA: Have you always wanted to work in the automotive industry?

LM: Not necessarily, but I am happy to be here. I definitely stay because of the people and the opportunity to solve pressing challenges for growing companies.

SEMA is excited to announce Georgia State Rep. John Carson, a Republican representing the Atlanta suburbs in District 46, as winner of the 2024 Stephen B. McDonald Lawmaker of the Year Award. Rep. Carson was honored for his outstanding leadership in passing SB 352, legislation that modernizes Georgia's vehicle suspension modification laws.  

The Stephen B. McDonald Lawmaker of the Year Award--presented to Rep. Carson at the 2024 SEMA Show--is one of SEMA's highest honors, given annually to a state lawmaker who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in supporting and protecting the rights of automotive businesses, consumers and enthusiasts. The award is named after Stephen B. McDonald, a long-time SEMA advocate who dedicated his career to advancing pro-industry policies and helps recognize lawmakers who champion legislation that strengthens the specialty automotive industry. 

Rep. Carson's work on SB 352 was a significant victory for Georgia's automotive aftermarket industry. The bill replaced the state's outdated and ambiguous suspension-modification limit, which had capped changes at a 2-in. height difference based on the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. The new law provides a more transparent, consistent standard by measuring vehicle height from the ground to the frame. This reform has eliminated confusion among car owners and law enforcement, creating a more transparent regulatory environment protecting automotive enthusiasts and businesses specializing in vehicle customization. 

Rep. Carson's work on SB 352 highlights his commitment to creating a fair and transparent regulatory environment for the automotive aftermarket. Key industry leaders supported his efforts, including Fox Factory and Offroad Warehouse, who significantly advocated for the bill's passage.

Carson's commitment to supporting our industry and ensuring fair laws for automotive enthusiasts and businesses is truly commendable," said Robinson. This law brings clarity and fairness to vehicle modification rules and strengthens Georgia's position as a hub for the specialty automotive industry." 

The economic impact of SEMA's members in Georgia is substantial. The aftermarket industry contributes significantly to the state's economy, with a total economic output of $11.63 billion, supporting nearly 50,000 jobs and contributing $1.39 billion in taxes. This underscores the vital role of SEMA and its members in driving economic growth in Georgia's automotive sector. 

Rep. Carson has been a dedicated public servant in the Georgia House of Representatives since winning a special election in 2011 to represent District 46, covering parts of Cobb and Cherokee counties north of Atlanta. Carson has been known throughout his tenure for his focus on transportation, tax reform and public safety.  

Beyond his legislative achievements, Carson is also a certified public accountant (CPA) with extensive experience in the financial services industry. He leverages his professional background to advocate for fiscal responsibility in state government, focusing on policies that spur economic development while lowering the tax burden for Georgia's citizens and businesses.

The 2024 SEMA Show was a success as the four-day event featured the latest automotive innovations and trending brands, concluding on a high note with the second-ever SEMA Fest concert festival on Friday, November 8. 

SEMA Fest pass holders were thrilled by dynamic motorsports activations like electrifying burnouts and stunts at the OPTIMA Village. The festival's stellar musical lineup, featuring Petey, Fitz And The Tantrums, Sublime and Cage The Elephant, brought vibrant energy, making it an unforgettable finale to the event.

The 2024 SEMA Fest crowds were dancing along to the music throughout the evening, leading up to the headliners Sublime and Cage The Elephant.

 

Grammy-winning Cage The Elephant closed SEMA Fest with their uncompromising creativity and wildly cathartic performance.
