A bill has been passed by the Ohio state legislature to define unsafe used tires and prohibit their installation. An unsafe used tire would have a tread depth of under 2/32 in.; damage that exposes inner components, such as body plies and steel belts; improper repairs; or missing its U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) identification number. The legislation has been sent to Governor John Kasich to be signed into law. Colorado and New Jersey have already enacted similar bills. At least 30 million used tires are estimated to be sold in the United States each year.
