The SEMA Show is a worldwide automotive specialty-products trade event that attracts more than 100,000 industry leaders and professionals each year and covers the entire realm of the specialty-equipment industry.

The Show is comprised of 13 categories: Business Services; Global Tire Expo—Powered by TIA; Hot Rod Alley; Mobile Electronics & Technology; Collision Repair & Refinish; Powersports & Utility Vehicles; Racing & Performance; Restoration Marketplace; Restyling & Car Care Accessories; Tools & Equipment; Trucks, SUVs and Off-Road; Wheels & Accessories; and OEM.

Each of the sections will be highlighted in SEMA eNews from now leading up to the Show, November 1–4, in Las Vegas. This week's spotlight is on the Restoration Marketplace, which is located in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, next to Hot Rod Alley and near the Racing & Performance section.

The restoration market includes the products and services used in returning vehicles, typically classics, to their originally manufactured or showroom condition. Many of these products are refurbished original parts, others are salvaged parts and some are reproductions. According to the 2011 SEMA Market Report, the restoration niche leveled off in 2010 after two years of decline, hitting $1.40 billion in sales at the retail level.

The study also shows that specialty-product outlets, automotive chains and mail-order companies account for the majority of restoration accessory sales. In addition, restoration enthusiasts utilize the Internet for parts information and purchases but also rely on traditional catalog mail order.

Vehicles in the restoration market typically consist of antiques manufactured prior to 1920, domestic vehicles manufactured from 1920 to World War II and post-World War II domestic vehicles and foreign vehicles. However, the term "restoration" is not restricted to only original or reproduction parts. The companies within the industry have come to embrace "restomods," which can be simply defined as restoration plus modification. Restomods use techniques or parts to improve performance or appearance that were not authentic to a vehicle's original version.

Currently, total buyer registrations for the 2011 SEMA Show are up by nearly 43%, when compared with the same time period in 2010. Of the buyers attending the 2011 Show, 27% indicated that they're interested in products specifically targeting the restoration/vintage market segment. That's nearly a 52% increase compared to the same time frame in 2010.

The list is a simple way to connect exhibitors who want to get more eyes on their products at the Show with builders designing the vehicles that attract attention from thousands of buyers and members of the media.

Each week SEMA eNews will feature the latest additions to the list, and hundreds of builders will access the list to find the pieces they need to complete their builds. The SEMA Show features thousands of project vehicles each year that represent the ingenuity and creativity of the specialty-equipment market. SEMA Show exhibitors can generate more product exposure by offering products to builders through the SEMA Show Products for Project-Vehicle Builders list. The list is a simple way to connect exhibitors who want to get more eyes on their products at the Show with builders designing the vehicles that attract attention from thousands of buyers and members of the media.

Each week SEMA eNews will feature the latest additions to the list, and hundreds of builders will access the list to find the pieces they need to complete their builds. Product-placement opportunities such as this are so beneficial that exhibitors often offer products for free or at a greatly reduced rate. Note: The list is reserved for exhibitors of the 2011 SEMA Show.

NHTSA Makes Technical Corrections to Rules Covering Lighting Equipment, Electric-Powered Vehicles and Event Data Recorders

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) amended several unrelated rules to address technical issues in response to industry requests.

Lighting Standard (pdf): The NHTSA amended Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108 to correct technical errors and address concerns that the standard was changed in substance when it was reorganized in 2007. The standard had been amended many times since it was first adopted in 1967 in order to address technological advances and enhance safety. In the process, the old regulation was unnecessarily complex and difficult to understand. The intent of the 2007 revision was to simplify the regulation to the extent possible. The NHTSA is still reviewing the revised standard to confirm there were no other changes of substance. It is scheduled to take effect on December 1, 2012, although voluntary compliance is now permitted.

Electric-Powered Vehicles (pdf): The NHTSA modified FMVSS No. 305 to clarify definitions used in the standard. The agency also addressed technical issues regarding the retention requirements for electric energy storage/conversion systems, electrical isolation requirements, test specifications and requirements for electrical isolation monitoring, state-of-charge of electric energy storage devices prior to the crash tests, a proposed protective barrier compliance option for electrical safety, use of alternative gas to crash test hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles and a proposed low-energy compliance option for electrical safety.

Event Data Recorders (pdf): The NHTSA made minor modifications to the “Part 563” regulation, which establishes uniform requirements for electronic data recorders (EDRs), also known as "black boxes," which are voluntarily installed in light-duty vehicles. EDRs document key events just before and after a car crash. Beginning in September 2012, any EDR installed on a light-duty vehicle must meet the minimum performance criteria. Data to be retrieved includes crash speed, brake, accelerator pedal, safety belt and airbag-deployment information.

With More Than 500 Members, State Legislative Caucus Continues to Thrive

In its daily efforts to promote and protect the auto hobby, SEMA continues to partner with state lawmakers from across the country through the State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus. Celebrating its six-year anniversary, the caucus is a bipartisan group of state lawmakers whose common thread is a love and appreciation for automobiles.

Supported by SEMA’s government affairs office in Washington, D.C., the caucus is raising the motor-vehicle hobby and specialty-equipment industry’s profile in state legislatures and in the public’s eyes. Approximately 515 state legislators from all 50 states are involved in the caucus. Working in state capitals, these legislators are frequently called upon to oppose restrictive legislation that seeks to prohibit vehicle modification. Many of these legislators have also proactively sought to preserve and protect the hobby by improving existing motor-vehicle statutes and creating new programs to safeguard and expand it.

Car Guys and Gals…Just Like You

With More Than 500 Members, State Legislative Caucus Continues to Thrive

New York Assemblymember Bill Reilich, pictured with his '08 Shelby GT 500, serves as the State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus chairman.
In its daily efforts to promote and protect the auto hobby, SEMA continues to partner with state lawmakers from across the country through the State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus. Celebrating its six-year anniversary, the caucus is a bipartisan group of state lawmakers whose common thread is a love and appreciation for automobiles.

Supported by SEMA’s government affairs office in Washington, D.C., the caucus is raising the motor-vehicle hobby and specialty-equipment industry’s profile in state legislatures and in the public’s eyes. Approximately 515 state legislators from all 50 states are involved in the caucus. Working in state capitals, these legislators are frequently called upon to oppose restrictive legislation that seeks to prohibit vehicle modification. Many of these legislators have also proactively sought to preserve and protect the hobby by improving existing motor-vehicle statutes and creating new programs to safeguard and expand it.

New York Assemblymember Bill Reilich, pictured with his '08 Shelby GT 500, serves as the State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus chairman.
In its daily efforts to promote and protect the auto hobby, SEMA continues to partner with state lawmakers from across the country through the State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus. Celebrating its six-year anniversary, the caucus is a bipartisan group of state lawmakers whose common thread is a love and appreciation for automobiles.

Supported by SEMA’s government affairs office in Washington, D.C., the caucus is raising the motor-vehicle hobby and specialty-equipment industry’s profile in state legislatures and in the public’s eyes. Approximately 515 state legislators from all 50 states are involved in the caucus. Working in state capitals, these legislators are frequently called upon to oppose restrictive legislation that seeks to prohibit vehicle modification. Many of these legislators have also proactively sought to preserve and protect the hobby by improving existing motor-vehicle statutes and creating new programs to safeguard and expand it.

With More Than 500 Members, State Legislative Caucus Continues to Thrive

In its daily efforts to promote and protect the auto hobby, SEMA continues to partner with state lawmakers from across the country through the State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus. Celebrating its six-year anniversary, the caucus is a bipartisan group of state lawmakers whose common thread is a love and appreciation for automobiles.

Supported by SEMA’s government affairs office in Washington, D.C., the caucus is raising the motor-vehicle hobby and specialty-equipment industry’s profile in state legislatures and in the public’s eyes. Approximately 515 state legislators from all 50 states are involved in the caucus. Working in state capitals, these legislators are frequently called upon to oppose restrictive legislation that seeks to prohibit vehicle modification. Many of these legislators have also proactively sought to preserve and protect the hobby by improving existing motor-vehicle statutes and creating new programs to safeguard and expand it.
