One Block of Wood…No Rules!
On Saturday, July 24, some of our industry’s greatest hot-rod builders will square off in a one-of-a-kind race. More than 20 well-known hot rodders are designing and building their own small pinewood cars to be raced at the annual SEMA Pinewood Drag Races in Pasadena, California.
Unlike the pinewood races many of us grew up with, this race has very few rules. The only limits on the design of these miniature street rods are the builders’ own imagination and creativity. One car builder will receive the inaugural “HRIA Cup” along with bragging rights for the next 12 months. In addition, one car will be voted as “Best Design” during the banquet festivities.
The public is invited to view the race and meet some of the builders who will be in attendance. All of the custom-designed pinewood cars will be autographed by the builders and displayed at the SEMA Show in November in Las Vegas. At that time, SEMA members may bid on the cars in a silent auction to raise money for Childhelp and Victory Junction Gang Camp.

Protecting Hot Rods: It’s Time to Take a Stand
The HRIA is actively involved in supporting pro-street-rod legislation in every state across the country. SEMA has drafted a model bill for helping hobbyists title street rods in their respective states. Currently, 20 states have passed versions of the SEMA-model bill, but we need the support of all HRIA members to pass bills in every state.
The best way HRIA members can help support street-rod bills in their own states is to join the SEMA Action Network (SAN). There is no cost to join, and you will receive important updates on legislation in your area that could impact the street-rod hobby. In addition, the SAN website, www.semasan.com, has all the information you need to stay informed about laws and legislators in your state.

Upcoming HRIA Meetings: Get Involved With Your Council
All current and potential HRIA members are invited to join us for open meetings throughout the summer. These meetings are a great opportunity to meet with personnel from other HRIA member companies, learn about industry events and stay informed about hot-rod legislation. This is your opportunity to find out more about HRIA as well as to get involved.
HRIA open meetings will take place in conjunction with the 13th Goodguys Nationals, to be held on July 9–11, 2010, at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio, and at the National Street Rod Association’s 41st Annual Street Rod Nationals, to be held on August 5–8, 2010, at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
Youth Awareness: Building Future Hot Rodders
Has your company hosted an event involvinghigh school, vocational or college students? We would love to hear about the ways that your company has involved young people in the hot-rodding hobby and industry.
The HRIA can provide you with assistance and information to help you develop your own Youth Awareness program. From shop tours to mentoring programs, the HRIA has many ways for you to reach the next generation of hot rodders.
