Racing News: New IRL Engine Formula Coming in 2012

WANTS COMPETITION: Honda Performance Racing Development President Erik Berkman says his company wants competition from another manufacturer in the IRL IndyCar Series instead of being the single-engine supplier to the series. The IRL is to introduce a new engine formula to take effect in 2012.

HOOSIER HOME:
Indiana Sprint Week kicked off with three winners in three nights (Chad Boat, Dave Darland, Levi Jones). Bryan Clauson finished second all three nights and leads the points.

BIG LOSS: International Speedway Corp. lost $31.7 million in the second quarter, thanks in part to the $53.7 million loss posted by Motorsports Authentics, which ISC co-owns with Speedway Motorsports Inc.

MR. SUMMER NATIONALS:
Dennis Erb Jr. came from behind and won the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals championship for the third-consecutive season.

NEW COMBINATION: The American Speed Association is entering the road-racing scene. ASA will sanction the ASA-Bondurant Championship Race Series in a cooperative effort with the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving.

SCHOOL CHANGE: The Jeff Gordon Racing School has been transferred to NASCAR and will operate as the NASCAR Racing Experience.

NEW LEADER:
Tony Stewart moved to the top of the National Speed Sport News Power Rankings, which rates drivers from all auto-racing disciplines. Stewart earned his first 410 winged sprint car victory and finished fourth in Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. The rankings appear weekly in America’s Motorsports Authority.
