Racing icon Andy Granatelli passed away Sunday, December 29, at the age of 90. He was a pivotal force in the earliest days of the specialty-equipment industry, building a business out of selling speed equipment to new automotive enthusiasts who wanted to modify their cars.

Grancor (short for Granatelli Corp.) was a warehouse distributor serving the Midwest by importing products from California manufacturers such as Edelbrock, Winfield and Belond.

In addition to supporting the then industry's earliest companies, Granatelli became a household name in the late-60s through the 70s with TV commercials for his STP fuel and oil additives, as well as the turbine-engine STP-Paxton car of Parnelli Jones that pushed the field at the 1967 Indianapolis 500.

In a 2001 interview with SEMA News upon his induction into the SEMA Hall of Fame, Granatelli provided this answer when asked what he considered his proudest accomplishment: "My sons," he said. "In the business world," he continued, "it would be the job I did at STP. I took a little-known company and made it into a household name in nine years", he stated. "There were [STP] decals on every kid's motorcycle, bicycle, notebook, wagon and car," he added.

No funeral services for Granatelli have been announced.

Global Participation at the 2013 SEMA Show

Noted one U.S. exhibitor, David Borla of Borla Performance Industries: “SEMA networking programs—whether roundtable discussions at the SEMA Show or trips abroad—are an invaluable resource to SEMA members.”
U.S. exhibitors and Russian buyers participated in a roundtable held in both Russian and English to allow Russian buyers not comfortable with speaking in English to participate fully. Noted one U.S. exhibitor, David Borla of Borla Performance Industries: “SEMA networking programs—whether roundtable discussions at the SEMA Show or trips abroad—are an invaluable resource to SEMA members.”

Buyers from 135 countries descended on Las Vegas to meet with exhibitors at the 2013 SEMA Show and take part in numerous international programs. In fact, 25% of all buyers at the 2013 SEMA Show were from beyond U.S. shores, which was good news for exhibitors seeking to broaden their customer bases.

In the next issue of SEMA News, we will look at other international activities held at the 2013 SEMA Show, including coverage of the international journalists who served on the Global Media Award panel.

These leading media outlets from 20 countries were charged with selecting the top 10 products each believed would sell best in their home markets. We will explore insights into their vehicle customization markets and their reasons for their selections.

The following gallery showcases international snapshots from the SEMA Show.

Chinese, Russian and Middle East Market Roundtables

The day before the SEMA Show opened was very busy for exhibitors. They not only had to set up their booths but also participated in the wide variety of educational programs offered throughout the day.

The SEMA international department sponsored three roundtables covering promising emerging markets: China, Russia and the Middle East.

SEMA Vice President of OEM and Product Development Programs Mike Spagnola (far right) briefed U.S. Department of Commerce officials who visited the SEMA Garage booth to hear about the great demand for the Toyota HiLux (pictured) and the Ford Ranger T6. SEMA Vice President of OEM and Product Development Programs Mike Spagnola (far right) briefed U.S. Department of Commerce officials who visited the SEMA Garage booth to hear about the great demand for the Toyota HiLux (pictured) and the Ford Ranger T6. SEMA imported the two vehicles to the United States so that association members could measure these hard-to-obtain vehicles in order to make export-ready products. This program is made possible through SEMA’s partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce. Member companies wishing to join the nearly 180 companies that have already measured one or both vehicles are urged to contact Mike Spagnola at mikes@sema.org.

Buyers came from Moscow and St. Petersburg as well as from nearby Ukraine. The seminar on the Russian market was the second of three roundtables on promising international markets. Buyers came from Moscow and St. Petersburg as well as from nearby Ukraine. “I really enjoyed the interactions of buyers and sellers, and I’m glad it was structured in the manner it was,” said Luke Rood, international account manager of Texas-based XPEL Technologies Corp. “Hearing the issues our international customers had opened my eyes to their difficulties and stimulated some new ideas for solutions. What a pleasant surprise it was to be involved in actual conversation with buyers and sellers versus listening to a lecture. I couldn’t take notes fast enough!”
