NEARLY GONE: Toyota officials acknowledged that slumping car sales nearly led to the company pulling its Formula One racing program. Tadashi Yamashina, chairman of Toyota Motor Sports, said the pressure is on and for the team to survive it “must win” this season.

A SAD DAY: Fans and racers alike are morning the loss of one of America’s historic short tracks. Manzanita Speedway, located in Phoenix, was sold March 12 and will be used for industrial development. The final race at the half-mile oval, which has been holding auto races for 58 years, will be April 11.

FUEL CONSIDERATIONS: As the Indy Racing League considers a new engine formula that would be used beginning in 2012, one thing holding up the process is the fuel to be used. While the IndyCar Series currently uses ethanol, several of the manufacturers interested in supplying engines would prefer to use a gasoline/ethanol blend. No decision has been made either way at this point in the process.

BUD RUNS DRY: Currently in its 30th season of sponsoring Kenny Bernstein Racing, Anheuser-Busch informed the legendary NHRA drag racer that its Budweiser brand will not return to sponsor the team with Kenny’s son Brandon driving in 2010, ending the longest sponsorship relationship in motorsports history.

HIRED: Joe Mattes has been named interim president of Motorsports Authentics.

TOP DOG: With Donny Schatz struggling during a two-day World of Outlaws visit to Silver Dollar Speedway, Kyle Busch moved to the top of the National Speed Sport News Power Rankings. The rankings appear weekly in America’s Motorsports Authority.

NEWS NUGGETS

TASCA GETS FIRST CAREER WIN; DIXON GETS FIRST 2009 WIN AT GAINESVILLE: It was a Sunday of firsts in the nitro classes of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series as Funny Car driver Bob Tasca picked up his first career win, while former two-time Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon picked up his first win with his new Al-Anabi team.

From Friday qualifying to Sunday's finals, Tasca proved that he had the car to beat, securing the No. 1 qualifying position, then moving past names like Jim Head, Tim Wilkerson, John Force and close friend Tony Pedregon in the final round. It was his first win of the season and first career win in the Motorcraft Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang.

“Tony is my best friend—I was the best man at his wedding—and I can’t tell you what he means to me,” said Tasca. “Our families are going to Disney World tomorrow—my wife is his wife’s best friend, too—and he hugged me before the final and said, ‘B, either way, we’re going to Disney tomorrow, but if you win you’re buying dinner.’”

For Dixon, his first win of the season and first win for the newly organized Al-Anabi Racing team was exactly what they needed to forget the early season woes the team has faced.

“I know how hard it is to make these cars go down the track, but they make it look easy,” said Dixon, referring to his new team. “It’s an amazing group. Alan Johnson is a genius and Jason McCulloch [crew chief] is working right underneath him, and I’m happy for him to get his first win. I’m also happy for Sheik [team co-owner Sheikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Thani] and to be able to get his first win the third race out.”

In Pro Stock, former world champion Jason Line was able to drive his Summit Racing Pontiac GXP past Allen Johnson and pick up his second win of the season on a holeshot, while Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Hector Arana drove past former world champion Matt Smith to pick up only his second career win.

UNITED ASSOCIATION TO SPONSOR CHICAGO AND ENGLISHTOWN EVENTS; ALSO MAJOR ASSOCIATE SPONSOR FOR DON PRUDHOMME RACING: United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada (UA) has secured title-rights sponsorship of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events in Chicago and Englishtown. I red-lighted on my last qualifying run Saturday and couldn’t sleep last night thinking about that. It feels awesome to prove that last year wasn’t a fluke, and I want to win some more.”

Last month, 11.4% (index = 43) of consumers surveyed said that they planned to purchase custom parts and accessories for their vehicle sometime within the next three months, according to the February SEMA Performance Parts and Accessories Demand Index (PADI). This is actually an increase from a January index of 36, or roughly 9.6% of consumers making purchase plans.

Of those consumers making purchase plans, 18.3% said that they plan to modify a pickup, up from 15.9% in January and the highest vehicle segment targeted for customization last month.

Pickup sales have been down. In February, sales declined 54% with several of the top-selling pickups last month experiencing an even greater dip. Still, as pickup sales plummet, one question arises: Why does the SEMA PADI show that the most popular vehicles targeted for future customization plans are still pickups?

Simply put, the number of pickups currently on the road today represents nearly one quarter (21%) of all of the vehicles registered in the United States. According to September 2008 data from Experian Automotive, current vehicle registrations included more than 51 million pickups registered.

The second table below shows a breakdown of these pickups by make. Specialty-equipment manufacturers and retailers hurting from the decline in new pickup sales could still find opportunity for sales growth in products for older pickups because owners are looking to make their current pickup last longer.

This could include enhancing the appearance, utility and performance with custom parts and accessories. Vehicle registration data is now available to SEMA members at no charge. To obtain data for any make, model or year of any vehicle in the United States and learn which older vehicle markets may be worth diversifying into, contact the SEMA Research & Information Center at research@sema.org.

Total pickup sales declined 54% in February compared to the same period last year. The Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-Series light-duty pickups outsold all other pickups last month.

There are currently more than 17 million Ford pickups registered in the United States today, the highest pickup make of the more than 51 million trucks currently registered. — SEMA Research & Information Center

Automotive enthusiasts purchase a wide range of custom performance parts and accessories for their vehicles, so while analyzing a  "Top 10" or "Top 20" list of products purchased does give useful insight into these enthusiasts, taking a more holistic approach may prove more helpful. With that in mind, the list of all specialty-equipment products purchased by automotive enthusiasts surveyed by SEMA is listed in the table below.

Automotive magazine subscribers and website/forum visitors were surveyed during August–September of last year, with 3,037 total responses collected.

By age group, enthusiasts 16–27 years of age said that they purchased cold air intake conversions for their vehicles at a much higher rate than their older counterparts. Wheel purchases and stereo upgrades also tapered off as enthusiasts get older. Some performance parts, such as carburetors, however, were actually purchased at a higher frequency as enthusiasts age.

However, one element does prevail: Product purchases vary among enthusiasts, especially when looking at age ranges. Marketing strategies often target particular demographics depending on product, and the table below shows which products are purchased most often by which age group.

The table above shows the percent of enthusiasts who have purchased one or more of the 115 specialty automotive products listed. By age group, product choices vary significantly in several cases. — SEMA Research & Information Center

A 2005 Toyota Prius by Barris Kustom Industries displayed in the Making Green Cool Zone at the 2008 SEMA Show.

With the price of gas quickly rising as soon as it fell and an overall emphasis on reducing dependence on fossil fuels, hybrids are quickly making their way to enthusiasts’ consideration for a future vehicle purchase. Around 22% of automotive enthusiasts surveyed say that they will “definitely” consider a gas-electric hybrid upon their next vehicle purchase.

Since these enthusiasts surveyed said they spent roughly $2,800 each, on average, on specialty equipment over the last year, future hybrid-buying enthusiasts could represent potential profits for specialty-equipment companies.

Automotive magazine subscribers and website/forum visitors were surveyed during August–September of last year, with 3,037 total responses collected. Their answers to the survey provide a look at how enthusiasts spend their money customizing vehicles and clues to future purchases, including whether they plan to purchase hybrids.

Recently, hybrids have lacked something that even the most obscure cars do not: tuning and dress-up parts availability. There have been a select handful of parts that have been marketed toward hybrid cars, such as the Toyota Prius, Honda Insight and Honda FCX Clarity, but nothing ever specific to them. With this in mind, famed Japanese Honda tuner Mugen recently released its own set of tuning parts for the Japanese Honda Insight.

Mugen, known for building Honda NSXs used in Japanese Grand Touring Championship (JGTC) racing, have stepped into the realm of tuning hybrids, according to Autoblog.

Keeping in mind the current ecological push to be green, Mugen started by choosing the Honda Insight hybrid, opting to leave the engine untouched. The company chose to create a performance oil filter and exhaust with a sport silencer kit, leaving all other engine components stock, retaining mpg and low emissions. What Mugen did decide to modify were the aerodynamics and handling components.

They started by creating a new front fascia for the car while integrating a new grille and lip spoiler, then creating new side skirts and a redesigned rear fascia. To complete the package and give the car a real sport-compact look, the company created a rear wing reminiscent of the RSX Type R spoiler.

On all four corners of the Insight, Mugen included a new set of dampers and springs, dropping the Insight 20 mm and the option of using either 15- or 16-inch wheels.

At the 2008 SEMA Show, several companies displayed modified versions of gas-electric hybrids, showing attendees that a market for these vehicles is alive and ready. Barris Kustom Industries, A123Systems-Hymotion and VIP Autosalon, for example, all showed customized versions of the popular Prius.

The possible creation of performance-marketed products specifically developed for hybrids is a concept that SEMA members may look into to help not only push for a green environment, but also to help open and expand the tuning market. SEMA members have the opportunity to create more dress-up and tuning parts for hybrids, but they also have the possibility of creating parts that will further increase the fuel efficiency and help reduce the emissions of hybrids.  — SEMA Research & Information Center

Realizing that the industry needs new tools to help companies survive the tough economy, SEMA has launched a new financial benchmarking program. Data collected thus far shows that SEMA-member manufacturers project varying levels of growth for the next three months. While 46% project sales to be down, 22% already expect that sales will make an upward trajectory within the next three months compared to this time last year.

So far, more than 600 companies have decided to participate in SEMA’s financial benchmarking program. The program is designed to accumulate data that you can use to see how your company is doing in comparison to others in the industry. Each month, information from responding companies will be aggregated and reports generated for the basic distribution categories of the industry.

The program asks a battery of financial questions that provide essential information for business management. Using aggregated data from similar companies, SEMA members will be able to benchmark their operations, answering questions such as:

  • How does my cost of goods compare to my peers?
  • Does my company invest more in marketing than others in my category?
  • Is my quick ratio above or below the norm for the industry right now?
  • How are my inventory turns doing compared to similar operations?
  • Are the amount of product returns my company is having out of whack right now?

The data will provide benchmarking information for just about all aspects of a company’s financial operation. The added benefit is that trend data will emerge over time, again providing a yardstick by which to compare your company’s operation.

To ease concerns that some company executives may have about SEMA seeing their individual company data, the association has contracted with an outside vendor—Hedges & Company—to collect and aggregate the information each month. They willingly enter into legally binding non-disclosure agreements with any who request them and report only aggregated data to SEMA and program participants.

Below you will find a few nuggets from the data being collected:
