A total of $119,000 in scholarships is being distributed to 73 students through the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund (SMSF), a program administered by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) to foster leadership opportunities in the specialty-equipment marketplace and to support educational goals for students.

“We’re honored to present the awards to this year’s SEMA scholarship winners,” said Tom Myroniak, SEMA Vice President, Marketing and Member Services. “The applications that came through were truly impressive and reflective of an amazing and talented group. We’re now looking forward to watching these individuals continue their education and pursue careers in the exciting SEMA industry.”

The SMSF received 551 qualified applications on or before the deadline in April 2009. From those, 74 individuals were chosen as winners, including 14 recent graduates who applied for the loan forgiveness program.

Introduced five years ago, the Loan Forgiveness Program offers individuals who have been working for a SEMA member company for at least one year the opportunity to receive $1,000 to pay for his or her existing student loan. Like the scholarships, the loan forgiveness program was developed as an incentive for students to seek employment in the automotive specialty-equipment industry upon graduation.

Also of note, 20% of the award dollars went to SEMA member company employees or their dependents.

“Although SEMA affiliation is not a requirement of the scholarships, added consideration is given to employees of, and relatives of employees at, SEMA member companies,” said Myroniak. “It’s great to see SEMA members taking advantage of this benefit.”

The SMSF has awarded more than $1.25 million to over 800 students since 1984. Applications for the 2010 program will be available at www.sema.org/scholarship in December.

DRIVER SWAPS: Giancarlo Fisichella has left Force India and will finish the Formula One season with Ferrari. Vitantonio Liuzzi has been named to replace Fisichella at Force India.

SPONSOR TALE: One NHRA legend found a sponsor and another needs one. Kenny Bernstein has landed Copart to back his Top Fuel operation next season, but Don Prudhomme is losing US Tobacco as his sponsor and he needs a primary backer or an investor quickly.

EIGHT: Tony Schumacher tied “Big Daddy” Don Garlits with his eighth U.S. Nationals victory on Monday afternoon. Ashley Force Hood, Jeg Coughlin and Hector Arana were also professional winners at The Big Go at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.

MIDGET CONCERNS:
Car counts in the USAC Mopar National Midget Series have become a concern for track operators, competitors and sanctioning officials. So much so that this weekend’s Hut Hundred at Indiana’s Terre Haute Action Track has been cancelled, and USAC sprint cars will instead race at the historic half-mile dirt track.

SUSPENDED: NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Matt Guidera was suspended for a year for violating NHRA’s substance abuse policy. He will appeal the decision.

TO THE TOP: With a victory, his 16th of the season, and a second-place finish, World of Outlaws driver Joey Saldana jumped to the top of the National Speed Sport News Power Rankings. The rankings appear weekly in America’s Motorsports Authority.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) denied a five-year-old petition to harmonize the headlamp lighting standards for Europe and the United States. In 2004, the Groupe de Travail “Bruxelle 1952” (GTB) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Lighting Committee requested an alternative to existing specifications in the headlamp lighting standard (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108) that would make it easier for industry to design, test and market one lamp for multiple markets.

The changes would provide an optional requirement for upper- and lower-beam headlamp patterns based on specifications under “ECE R112” approved by the United Nations' Economic Commission for Europe (ECE).

The NHTSA did not believe there was enough supporting documentation to verify that any cost savings would not compromise safety benefits in the United States. The agency noted that it is pursuing a comprehensive review of the lighting standard which could result in some regulatory changes proposed under the petition.

The NHTSA stated that it may take some time to translate the existing provisions into “performance-oriented terms independent of technology.”
