Tires are a huge part of the specialty-equipment industry, which is why SEMA and TIA have created a tire-industry-only part of the SEMA Show.

As the world’s premier automotive specialty-products trade show, the 2010 SEMA Show, to be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from November 2–5, 2010, attracts more than 100,000 industry leaders from more than 100 countries and also provides a unique opportunity for buyers and exhibitors to connect.

So far, 180 tire companies—of which 34 are first-timers—are exhibiting at the Global Tire Expo—Powered by TIA in the South Hall’s lower level.

For 2010, SEMA and the Tire Industry Association (TIA) have created this tire-industry-only part of the SEMA Show, which will be open to all segments of the tire industry, including automotive, commercial, retreading, recycling and more.

To demonstrate the overall importance of the specialty-equipment industry’s tire segment, a total of 12,488 unique registered buyers of the 2010 SEMA Show indicate they are interested in tire products. This includes 1,947 buyers who are interested in off-road tires (OTR) tires, 5,292 in attendance for tire accessories and 5,249 for passenger and light-truck tires.

“By working with TIA, we have created the Global Tire Expo to meet the needs of the tire industry,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “We're excited and confident that the 2010 SEMA Show and the Global Tire Expo will be more meaningful and relevant than ever before for tire manufacturers and buyers.”

Kersting points out that the SEMA Show has the potential to draw more than 50,000 buyers from all over the world, including those not currently in the tire market. “Many buyers at the SEMA Show are looking to expand their product lines to include tire-related products. The dedicated floor section and the other new programs will help buyers discover the potential that the tire industry has to offer.”

This section features the latest innovations in performance and OTR for passenger cars, light trucks, SUVs and race cars. Among preregistered buyers of the 2009 SEMA Show, 16% said tires were among their top product interests, while 23% of international buyers agreed. Forty-two percent of all preregistered buyers and 37% of international buyers carried tires. Ten percent of trucks and accessories preregistered buyers selected tires as a top product interest. Thirty-eight percent of buyers sell to the tires market.

“TIA and SEMA have worked incredibly hard to forge a closer and stronger relationship,” said Roy Littlefield, TIA's executive vice president. “We’ve also expanded our vision for a true tire industry show that encompasses all sectors of the tire industry, from automotive, to commercial, to retreading, to recycling and more. The result of all this effort is the new Global Tire Expo—Powered by TIA, and it’s been warmly received by the industry. We’re confident the Expo will quickly be regarded as the tire industry event of the year.”

The Expo will also include expanded educational session tracks targeted to the tire market. The tracks are “TPMS at 10,” “Tires at 2,” “Truck Tires at 10” and “Management at 4.” Every day of the Show, each track will feature a session relevant to tire dealers and led by knowledgeable experts in the tire industry. The educational sessions will be located in the Skybridge between the Central and South Halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Tom Marx, president and CEO of The Marx Group, will explain why an ill-prepared marketing strategy can doom a new-product launch in his 2010 SEMA Show seminar.

Tom Marx, president and CEO of The Marx Group, will moderate a panel seminar called "How to Produce the Perfect Product Launch," Monday, November 1, at SEMA Show 2010, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It will be a unique opportunity to gain valuable insight and hear from seasoned professionals on what makes a product launch successful based upon the six p's—planning, product, pricing, placement, promotion and participation.

“The problem with many product launches,” Marx shares, “is that they often do not reach their sales goals. After major investments in product development, engineering and manufacturing, the initial product launch marketing, strategy is often overlooked, underfunded or poorly executed.” This panel-based seminar features some of SEMA’s most seasoned experts on the topic:

1) Nate Shelton, SS Sales and Marketing, President; Owner, B&M Racing and Performance, Hurst and McLeod; Partner, Hurst Performance Vehicles; and SEMA Hall of Fame member and former SEMA Board of Directors chairman will share his invaluable insights on Planning and Product Development. Instrumental in the initial launch of the K&N Air filter product line, Shelton has more than 30 years of experience related to product launch planning and product development. Sharing from his days at K&N, he says, “We put together an automotive program and built the company into a $100-million-a-year corporation in about 14 years.”

2) Donnie Eatherly, co-owner and president of P&E Distributing, is well known in the industry for his willingness to share his knowledge for up-and-coming companies. Eatherly’s industry bragging rights include 24 SEMA Shows and 21 PWA conferences. The current PWA President and former two term SEMA Board member is excited to share his insight related to product pricing and placement (distribution). Eatherly has served as president of P&E Distributors for 20 years, growing the company into a multimillion dollar distribution network that covers more than 250 performance products. A major focus of his career has been in helping companies succeed with the right mix of price and distribution.

3) Jason Bruce, director of marketing and new business development at aFe Power, has had great success over the years promoting new products for performance brands that are household names: Hooker Headers, Holley Performance, NOS Nitrous Oxide Systems, Earl's Plumbing, Weiand, Flowtech, Lunati and Street Scene Equipment. Joining aFe Power in 2007, Bruce is responsible for all consumer promotions and marketing for this highly aggressive manufacturer of performance cold air intakes, exhaust systems, intake manifolds, intercoolers and throttle body spacers. aFe Power is a company that launches several hundred new products annually. Bruce will share input on how a launch can succeed or fail based on promotions and participation.

The product launch session will take place Monday, November 1, from 1:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It’s part of SEMA’s Marketing Track, which includes eight sessions in all (listed below). For more information about the seminar, e-mail Tom Marx at tmarx@themarxgrp.com. SEMA praised the United States Senate for passing the “Small Business Jobs and Credit Act” (HR 5297). The bill will be signed into law by President Obama pending imminent ratification by the House of Representatives.

The legislation creates a $30 billion fund to provide banks with less than $10 billion in assets access to capital to lend specifically to small businesses while providing tax incentives to encourage business development. In addition, the bill includes $12 billion in tax cuts and stronger government loan guarantees.

“We commend Congress for taking this critical step toward providing small businesses with access to lending,” said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting. “As the key to our nation’s economic recovery, small businesses must be given every opportunity to expand and prosper. A lessened access to capital has served to prolong this stagnant economy and resulted in unnecessary anxiety for businesses and consumers alike. SEMA members who qualify for this program will benefit greatly from this fund.”

In addition to providing loans, the legislation will also extend the bonus depreciation through 2010. In 2008 and 2009, all businesses were permitted to immediately write-off 50% of the cost of new equipment (“bonus depreciation”). The depreciation expired at the end of 2009. SEMA contends that the depreciation write-off encourages companies to invest in newer, more efficient equipment and spurs sales and creates jobs. The bill will also expand and extend the Section 179 program, allowing companies to write-off up to $500,000 in capital expenditures in tax years 2010 and 2011, double the current limit for 2010.

“SEMA is working at all levels of the lending chain to help make credit available to our members,” said Kersting. “Enacting H.R. 5297 into law is vital towards achieving this goal.”
