6th Annual Chevrolet Performance LSX Shootout Around the Corner
The NMCA and Chevrolet Performance will present the 6th Annual Chevrolet Performance LSX Shootout, which will once again take place at Lucas Oil Raceway Park in Indianapolis, the weekend of October 11–14, 2012. The LSX Shootout features some of the fastest LS-powered cars in the world, index-style and True Street racing for competitors of all levels, as well as an all-LS-powered car show. Presenting sponsor, GM High-Tech Performance magazine, will be at the event providing coverage for the LS community. This is the final event of the Chevrolet Performance LSX Challenge Series where champions will be crowned.

The LSX Shootout’s heads-up classes include JE Pistons LSX Drag Radial, ERL Performance All Motor and Holley EFI Real Street. Nitto Tires and Camaro Performers magazine are sponsoring the 5th Gen Camaro Challenge—an index class for new Camaros only—and GM High-Tech Performance will sponsor a 5th Gen Camaro Shootout on Sunday consisting of the fastest cars from the Camaro Challenge class. The Shootout also features two classes for mild to wild street-type LS-powered vehicles, Proform Racing LSX Rumble and TREMEC LSX True Street Challenge. The LSX Rumble class allows racers to pick their index, matching their street machine up against some of the fastest cars in the country.

The 2012 Chevrolet Performance LSX Shootout will also feature an all-LS car show for performance enthusiasts who want to show off their musclecars and hot rods. The LSX Shootout’s special two-day car show will give away an assortment of awards to classes for 5th Gen Camaros, 4th Gen Camaros and Firebirds, Corvettes, Cadillacs, GTOs, Trailblazers and LSX hybrids.

Yokohama Tire Corp.-Sponsored Off-Roaders Cameron and Heidi Steele Gearing up for ‘Vegas to Reno’ Race
Yokohama Tire Corp.-sponsored Cameron and Heidi Steele will be back in action at the Best in the Desert’s 534-mile “Vegas to Reno” race, August 16–18.

Heidi, whose five off-road season championships include a 2008 Best in the Desert title, will compete in her second race this year in the 7200 Class after becoming a mother in March. She placed second in June’s Baja 500 in a Ford Ranger.

Cameron, a Trophy-Truck veteran and two-time SCORE Person of the Year, will be in an 800hp Geiser Brothers truck in the Trick Truck Class at the Nevada race.

Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series returns to Perris Auto Speedway
The Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series returns to Perris Auto Speedway (PAS) Saturday night, August 18. After finishing fourth in the season opener February 25, Mike Spencer has won five main events in a row on the Riverside County clay oval. The PAS Senior Sprint Cars and the California Lightning Sprints will also be a part of the triple-header program. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first race will be at 7:00 p.m.

Spencer won his seventh main of 2012 last Friday night at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville and was on his way to what seemed like another win at Santa Maria on Saturday until Danny Sheridan squeezed by him at the line for the win. This Saturday, Ronnie Gardner will be driving the #18 Kittle Motorsports car that Sheridan won in at Santa Maria.

Thus far in 2012, Spencer has won seven of the first 12 main events in the Series.  Of his five straight wins at The PAS, he has two complete sweeps of the show (fast time, heat win and main event win).

Sheridan, who is expected to be in the Ford Racing #73, and several other top stars, including Nic Faas, Brody Roa, David Cardey and the National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Rip Williams and his sons Cody and Austin, will try to emulate Sheridan’s accomplishment of last Saturday.

Heading into Saturday’s race, Faas, who has placed second to Spencer in three of his five PAS wins, is 120 points behind the four-time champ in the fight for the title. Roa, who lost an engine at Santa Maria after placing third at Watsonville, has a USAC/CRA win this year at Cocopah Speedway in Yuma, Arizona. Cardey will be making his third appearance in the Tom and Lauri Sertich Moose Racing entry on Saturday. Rip Williams, the 2004 USAC/CRA champ, had a season-best third-place finish July 28, and the 56-year-old has clawed his way to fifth in the standings. His middle son Austin, 22, has a win this year at Santa Maria, while his oldest son Cody set a new track record at Watsonville and is currently ninth in points.

Just two days shy of his 61st birthday, Bruce Douglass will try to make it four wins in seven outings in the PAS Senior Sprint Car Series on Saturday night.  Douglass narrowly fought off teammate Victor Davis for the win July 28. Four-time VRA Senior Champion Wiley Miller took third July 28. Douglass enters Saturday’s race tied for the point lead with 2011 champion Bill Badger of Santa Clarita.

The California Lightning Sprint Cars (CLS) will contest the Christian Stover Memorial race at The PAS on Saturday. Guy Maresch sits on top of the CLS standing, but 2011 Rookie of the Year Steve Limon has closed the gap to 50 points heading into Saturday’s race.

After Saturday’s show the Amsoil USAC/CRA series will head to the grand opening of the Route 66 Motorplex on the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds in Victorville for a Sunday night show with the USAC Western Midgets.

BIGFOOT to Attempt to Reclaim the World Record Long Jump during the O’Reilly Auto Parts 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals
In an attempt to reclaim the Guinness World Record for the longest Monster Truck long jump, BIGFOOT is set to launch the all-new BIGFOOT #18 piloted by Dan Runte, Sunday, September 16, at 3:00 p.m.—the final day of the 31st Annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Fall 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals in Indianapolis. The event is held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds beginning September 14, and concludes September 16, as the Grand Finale of the national Lucas Oil 4-Wheel Jamboree Series.

BIGFOOT and Runte first set the record in 1999 with a jump of 202 ft. in Nashville, Tennessee, during the Tennessee Aviation Day over a 727 jetliner. According to Guinness World Records, the current record is 208 ft. achieved by Joe Sylvester’s Bad Habit Monster Truck in 2010 in Columbia, Pennsylvania.

 zak brown
Zak Brown and his Porsche 962 will be in action for all three days of the race meeting this weekend at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

A Race Win and Two Pole Positions for Zak Brown at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
At this year’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, USA, Zak Brown will be racing his #16 ’86 Porsche 962 in the IMSA GTP class.

The Reunion takes place August 15–17, but the previous weekend sees the Pre-Reunion, a series of preliminary races ahead of the main event. On Saturday, Brown put his Porsche on pole position during qualifying, and led the race from the green flag to take his first win in this car. The following day Brown again started from pole position, and finished third having led the race in the early stages.

This car has won before at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, taking victory at its debut at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 2010, driven on that occasion by ex-Formula 1 driver Stefan Johansson.

Brown and his Porsche 962 will be in action for all three days of the race meeting this weekend at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

The Porsche 962 has accumulated 54 wins in IMSA competition alone, 40 of which came between 1985–1987. The 120 chassis, owned now by Zak Brown, was heavily modified by Dyson Racing. A high-downforce nose and air tunnels under the car were designed by aerodynamicist Dick Yagami.

This car won in its debut at the 1986 Six Hours of Riverside, commencing a streak of four podium finishes to start the season. Additionally, it earned wins at Charlotte and Sears Point helping Price Cobb finish second in the 1986 IMSA GTP Championship and Dyson Racing win its second Porsche Cup. It went on to collect a win at Watkins Glen in 1987 and another at Miami in 1988.

Fumio Nutahara piloted the ADVAN A048-shod Toyota Motorsports GmbH EV P002 racer to an EV class victory in 10 minutes, 15.380 seconds at the August 12, Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Fumio Nutahara wins "Race to the Clouds" EV Class
For the third consecutive year, an electric vehicle (EV) sponsored by The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. (YRC) not only won its class at the August 12, Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, but also broke a world record doing it. Fumio Nutahara piloted the ADVAN A048-shod Toyota Motorsports GmbH EV P002 racer to an EV class victory in 10 minutes, 15.380 seconds.

Nutahara's record-breaking time was also fast enough to place sixth overall in the 90th running of Colorado's "Race to the Clouds," which features a 12.42-mile course of 156 turns.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb—the second oldest race in the U.S. (after the Indianapolis 500)—was originally slated for July 8, but a wildfire near Colorado Springs, Colorado, forced the postponement until August 12.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) approved a final Environmental Assessment (EA) for replenishing salt to the Bonneville Salt Flats (BSF) as potash is mined on adjoining lands. The BLM adopted the approach recommended by SEMA and other organizations that are members of the “Save the Salt Coalition.” It requires a permanent replenishment program that guarantees the same quantity and quality of salt be returned to the BSF as is removed under an existing potash mining lease agreement.

The mining company, Intrepid Potash–Wendover LLC, has already exceeded the EA requirements, pumping nearly 1 million tons of salt onto the BSF over the past two years without removing any salt from the same area. SEMA and the Coalition are now pursuing a public fundraising campaign to go beyond "replenishment" so that the BSF can be "restored" with millions of tons of additional salt necessary to achieve the goal. All contributions will be used to purchase salt and/or the equipment necessary to pump, transport and lay down the salt.

The BSF is a national landmark under the jurisdiction of the BLM. Thousands of speed records have been set at this rare, unique geological site over the past 100 years. Originally 96,000 acres in size, the BSF has shrunk to about 30,000 acres from mining, which, until recently, did not include a salt return after the potash was removed. In addition to finalizing the EA, the BLM renewed for another 20 years a Public Land Order intended to protect the 30,000 acres BSF from direct mining or other activities that could threaten the land.

Product-placement opportunities such as these are so beneficial that manufacturers often offer products for free or at a greatly reduced rate. To participate in the list, access the Products for Project-Vehicle Builders form.

The latest addition to the list will be included each week in SEMA eNews, when available. The list is open to exhibitors of the 2012 SEMA Show only and is intended to build awareness for SEMA Show exhibitors and their products.

SEMA Show Exhibitors: Get your parts on more vehicles at the 2012 SEMA Show by offering products to builders through the Products for Project-Vehicle Builders list. The list is a simple way to connect manufacturers looking for additional product exposure at the SEMA Show with the builders who design and create the vehicles that grab the attention of media and buyers from around the world.

For questions or additional information, contact Jason Catullo at jasonc@sema.org 909-978-6713.

future vehicles, spy photos, car spy shots, liberty replacement

Jeep has been out testing a Dart-based replacement for the Liberty, and the photographers at Brenda Priddy & Co. snapped these photos. Sporting a Jeep-type grille and a crossover/SUV ride height, and carrying the codename UJ, the new Liberty replacement will come standard in front-wheel drive, with an all-wheel-drive option available.

According to Priddy, powerplants will include a new 3.2L V6, matted to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Worldwide, Priddy and her team are expecting Alfa Romeo and Lancia versions, with the Jeep version to debut at the North American International Auto Show in January. The new Jeep will be built at Chrysler’s plant in Toledo, Ohio; however, the Alfa version will be built in Italy alongside the Lancia crossover.
