The Ford Ranger T6, which SEMA imported from the Middle East to provide members the opportunity to measure and create export-ready products, was assembled in South Africa.

SEMA-member companies are invited to measure and preview a ’13 Ford Ranger T6 at Dearborn, Michigan-based Link Engineering, Tuesday, May 14. The one-ton pickup is being sold throughout the world but not in the United States or Canada. The truck was brought to the United States by SEMA in partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce to provide members access to difficult to obtain vehicles to measure and create export-ready products.

Register online to measure in the Midwest or California.

The truck is also available for members to measure in their shops on a cost-reimbursable basis. Additional sessions, to be held at SEMA headquarters, will be added to the schedule to meet the needs of members. There is no charge for these sessions.

The new Ford Ranger—a body-on-frame, Australian-designed, midsize truck—is offered in Double, Super and Regular cab body styles. The vehicle being made available to SEMA members is a 4x4 double cab with a 2.5L, five-speed gasoline engine. The vehicle, which SEMA imported from the Middle East, was assembled in South Africa.

The Collision Repair & Refinish section of the 2013 SEMA Show will feature an expanded section in the LV Hotel.

The 2013 SEMA Show will include enhanced features for the Collision Repair & Refinish market, including an expanded Show floor area, targeted activities both inside and outside the Las Vegas Convention Center and an unsurpassed educational program. The upgrades come as a result of the fast-growing interest from both exhibitors and buyers in the collision market segment.

“As interest grows and the landscape changes, we continue to evolve and are excited about the plans for 2013,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of communications and events.

Last year’s SEMA Show featured 330 exhibitors in the Collision Repair & Refinish area and the Tools & Equipment area—the two sections where many exhibitors feature products for the collision repair market. These exhibitors were housed in more than 88,000 sq. ft. in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. For 2013, the Collision Repair & Refinish section will expand into an adjacent area of the LV Hotel, accommodating up to 20,000 sq. ft. of additional space.

“The expanded floor section makes it really easy and convenient for buyers to see all the products in the collision market within a defined area,” said MacGillivray. More than 20,000 SEMA Show buyers expressed an interest in collision repair products, and 87% of all buyers have buying influence.

Those in the collision market are also able to network and expand their knowledge during several industry meetings and educational events taking place. The Collision Industry Conference (CIC), the National Auto Body Council (NABC) and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) are amongst the groups hosting meetings during the SEMA Show.

A comprehensive Repairer Driver Education program is also presented by the SCRS.

“We are really excited for this year’s Show,” said Aaron Schulenburg, SCRS executive director. Schulenburg says that the 2013 Repairer Driven Education program will include fresh and inspiring content, while continuing to remain relevant to collision repairers.

“Each year we have taken the feedback and used it to amplify our upcoming offerings,” he said, noting that 2013 will be the group’s fourth year partnering with SEMA to present the educational program. “The objective, however, remains the same: to address real issues faced by collision repairers, while providing tangible information that they can directly apply to their business when they return home.”

The 2013 SEMA Show is set for Tuesday–Friday, November 5–8, in Las Vegas. The annual event typically attracts more than 130,000 individuals from 125 countries, making the Show the premier automotive trade event in the world. Manufacturers come to the event to showcase products that enhance the styling, performance and functionality of cars, trucks and SUVs. For details, visit www.SEMAShow.com.

One of the functions of the SEMA Garage–Industry Innovations Center will be to host Measuring Sessions.

The SEMA Garage–Industry Innovations Center is now open to provide manufacturers with access to a full emissions-testing EO certification lab and dyno services. Located directly across the parking lot of SEMA's Diamond Bar, California, headquarters, the 15,000-sq.-ft. facility will include a full mechanic's garage and tech center.

The building was purpose-built 10 years ago with a full dyno lab that uses highly technical and sophisticated equipment to measure emissions output at a level consistent with the Air Resources Board requirements for EO certification. Working in conjunction with the Auto Club, SEMA is able to use the equipment to provide members with a valuable, low-cost resource for testing and obtaining certifications for new products.

“SEMA is in a unique position to provide members with a reliable and affordable way to test their products, thereby helping them get their products to market quickly,” said Mike Spagnola, SEMA vice president of OEM and product development programs. “We’re excited to be opening the Center up with EO testing and dyno services, and look forward to expanding on these offerings.”

With the emissions lab, SEMA is able to be an advocate and help manufacturers test and apply for EO certification. Basic dyno services are also available for the purpose of performance product development and iterative testing.

Future plans for the center include providing members with Measuring Sessions, an R&D facility, and marketing assistance in the form of a media center complete with a photo cove, photography center and media coordination services.

To learn more about the Product Development Center or to schedule an appointment at the lab, contact Spagnola at mikes@sema.org or call 909-978-6707.

The shooters at KGP Photography caught another Camaro test group, including prototypes for the new ’14 Camaro 1LE, and a fully undisguised ZL1 Coupe. This latest encounter gives the most complete look at the revamped ’14 Camaro lineup—including the ’14 1LE, ZL1 Coupe and Convertible, and the V6-powered Camaro RS. It's now possible to get a sense of how the various specs will be trimmed out, beyond what was seen at the official unveiling at the New York Auto Show.

The 1LE spec uses the new-for-’14 Camaro SS styling, and incorporates the 1LE's trademarked blacked-out hood.

As reported, the ZL1 will not get the new front-end treatment that will be applied across the rest of the Camaro lineup, reportedly due to the engineering work that would be required. Instead, it carries over the existing front end and marries it to the Camaro's refreshed rear styling.

The lightly disguised ZL1 soft-topped prototype gives us our first look at the '14 Camaro's new tail treatment as a convertible. While the Camaro gets a new CHMSL integrated directly into the rear fascia, the ZL1 convertible prototype caught here also maintains the CHMSL that is mounted on the rear deck—just aft of the convertible top—resulting in a two-tiered CHMSL treatment. Combine that with the new rear wing and the shark-fin antenna mounted on the rear deck, and there is a lot going on at the rear of the new convertible Camaros. If this is indeed the final design for the updated convertible, then why not eliminate the deck-mounted CHMSL? It would seem to be a cost-saving measure to keep an existing part and save on the tooling costs.

The RS prototypes caught here reveal a cleaner front bumper, with smaller fog lights set wide and inset smoothly into the front fascia. The front bumpers' central intake is detailed with more elegant and streamlined horizontal strakes, compared to the chunkier and more aggressive look found on the SS.
