Legislation that sought to allow Virginia’s antique vehicle hobbyists to install and use aftermarket exhaust systems was held over to the 2015 legislative session by the Senate Transportation Committee.

Legislation that sought to allow Virginia’s antique vehicle hobbyists to install and use aftermarket exhaust systems was held over to the 2015 legislative session by the Senate Transportation Committee. The bill had already been amended and approved by the Virginia House of Delegates.

Under the amended bill, antique vehicles would remain exempt from the requirement that they have exhaust systems of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment. However, they would continue to be required to be “in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual levels of noise.”

SEMA News, SEMA News 35 Under 35
SEMA News is looking to highlight top-tier talent in the automotive aftermarket industry who are under the age of 35 through its 35 Under 35 program.

For the third consecutive year, SEMA News is looking to highlight top-tier talent in the automotive aftermarket industry who are under the age of 35. We need your input. If you know of a leader who is under 35—whether they are in manufacturing and design, marketing, retail, events and media or distribution—we would like to hear from you.

It is very likely that SEMA members are currently working with creative and talented young professionals who are already moving the industry in new and different directions. They are also the ones who have played major roles in leveraging new and emerging technologies—in areas including marketing and product development—with a traditional automotive aftermarket business to expand company reach and customer interaction.

They could be budding superstars at an established company, entrepreneurs building their own brands, or innovators who have launched companies that are sure to become big names in the future. What they all will have in common are fresh ideas, enthusiasm, charisma and the drive to succeed. These are people who know what’s going on at ground level, who see opportunities that are now forming and who travel in circles that might be very different from those of our “old-school” industry leaders.

Nominate now for the 2014 SEMA News 35 Under 35. Nominations are due May 9, 2014.

Winners will be chosen based on their business success, contribution to their organization, industry knowledge and community involvement. We'll honor the winners in the September issue of SEMA News and on www.sema.org.

the Louisiana House of Representatives introduced legislation to annually designate the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the second weekend in July as "Louisiana Collector Car Appreciation" weekend.

Legislation has been introduced in the Louisiana House of Representatives to annually designate the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the second weekend in July as "Louisiana Collector Car Appreciation" weekend. A hearing on the bill is scheduled for March 13, 2014. Earlier this year, the SEMA Action Network (SAN) announced these dates to mark the fifth commemoration in what has become an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. SAN is again working to secure a U.S. Congressional resolution to recognize the day’s significance.

In the previous four years, thousands of Americans have gathered at car cruises, parades and other events to celebrate our nation’s automotive heritage. By taking part in these events around the country, these automotive enthusiasts and related businesses have ensured that their passion was honored and recognized.

For more information, visit the SEMA Action Network (SAN) website.

2013 SEMA Hall of Fame
SEMA members have the opportunity to nominate individuals for the 2014 SEMA Hall of Fame. Nominations are being accepted online.

SEMA is now accepting nominations for its Hall of Fame. Created in 1969, the SEMA Hall of Fame is the most prestigious honor presented to an individual by the association. As a SEMA member, you have the opportunity to nominate a person for the 2014 SEMA Hall of Fame.

The award is designed to honor outstanding persons in the automotive specialty-equipment industry who have enhanced the stature of, or significantly contributed to, the industry and/or association's growth.

A rule of thumb to qualify could be to ask yourself the following question: “If this person had never existed, how would SEMA and the industry be different?”

Please take a moment to review the Hall of Fame website and SEMA Hall of Fame criteria and listings of past inductees. In order to assist the Hall of Fame Committee in making their selection, please provide a brief statement, including accomplishments and comments as to why, based on the award criteria, the individual is deserving of this honor. Your completed nomination form is confidential and vital to helping the Hall of Fame Committee make their selection for the 2014 SEMA Hall of Fame.

Please submit a nomination before the Friday, March 21, 2014, deadline.

To learn more about the SEMA Hall of Fame and for a list of inductees, visit www.semahof.com or contact Gina Ledesma at ginal@sema.org, 909-978-6692.
