What do a car dealer, a former Navy SEAL commander and a financial advisor have in common? They were all recently elected to serve in the U.S. Congress. As a result of the November midterm elections, a lot of new faces have arrived in the nation’s capital. Fifty-eight first-timers were elected to the House of Representatives and 13 to the U.S. Senate. Among them are the future champions of the automotive specialty-equipment industry. While sorting through all of the new names may seem daunting, here are a few to keep an eye on.

Newly elected U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT) is a bona fide car guy. Not only did he attend the 2013 SEMA Show, but he also counts his restored ’38 Cadillac Series 65 as a prized possession. Prior to his election to Montana’s sole seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, Zinke served in the Montana State Senate. There, he was a member of the SEMA-supported State Automotive Enthusiast and Leadership Caucus.

A bill will be considered by the Joint Environment and Natural Resources Committee to amend Maine's ethanol prohibition law, Thursday, March 26, 2015.

In 2013, SEMA-supported legislation to prohibit the sale and distribution of corn-based ethanol in Maine was signed into law. Under the new law, 10 other states or a number of states with a collective population of 30 million would have to enact a similar prohibition before the Maine law could go into effect.

This year, legislation has been introduced to amend the law to provide that this prohibition would take effect if only three other states have enacted laws that prohibit the sale of motor fuel containing corn-based ethanol. The bill will be considered by the Joint Environment and Natural Resources Committee, Thursday, March 26, 2015.

The Kentucky Legislature approved legislation to put in place a new and more beneficial valuation procedure for older vehicles.

Legislation to put in place a new and more beneficial valuation procedure for older vehicles was approved by the Kentucky Legislature and now moves to Governor Steve Beshear for his signature and enactment into law. Under the bill, vehicles 20 years old or older would no longer be presumed to be in "original factory" or "classic" condition. Original factory and classic vehicles are currently assessed as high-value collectibles. This measure instead provides three options for assessing the value of these vehicles.
