Final Northeast SCCA Majors Championships Settled at PittRace

The 12th and final round of the 2015 SCCA U.S. Majors Tour Northeast Conference ran Sunday at the 63rd Annual Cumberland Classic, hosted at Pittsburgh International Race Complex (PittRace) by Steel Cities Region SCCA. Championships not yet clinched were decided on PittRace's newly-lengthened 2.78-mile circuit.

While Jim Goughary Jr. of Jupiter, Florida, ran away from the Group One field to score his second-straight win in Spec Racer Ford Gen 3, the battle for second would decide the season-long championship, with Joseph Sammut, of Locust Valley, New York, taking the runner-up spot over Greg Obadia, of Bathesda, Maryland, and the title in his Pencils Plus-sponsored machine. Two races later, Sammut would add a win in the Formula Enterprises class, clinching that championship as well.

The expected dogfight at the front of the Group Three field, for winged formula and prototype cars, came to grief just two corners in, as Formula 1000 drivers Jeremy Hill and J.R. Osborne made contact, each falling more than one lap behind. That opened the door for Jason Slahor to take the win in his Slahor Racing Citation over a charging, but wounded Hill. Osborne continued on without the front wing on his RFR Racecars Firman F1000, and retired after 12 laps. His fourth place points were enough to move him past Alex Mayer for the class championship.

Full results are available at the event page at www.scca.com/pittmajors. Final point standings will be available online later this week.

 Paul Fix
Paul Fix and the No. 4 StopFlex.com/TheCarCoach.com Chevrolet Corvette took the checkered flag in the Next Dimension 100, presented by FirstEnergy.

Paul Fix Victorious in Next Dimension 100 at Mid-Ohio

It was Paul Fix and the No. 4 StopFlex.com/TheCarCoach.com Chevrolet Corvette that emerged victorious in a tightly contested and chaotic Next Dimension 100, presented by FirstEnergy at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Round 7 of the 2015 Trans Am Championship.

In a race that seemed to throw everything possible at the competitors—heat, heavy traffic, multiple contacts and full course yellows—Fix managed to endure everything thrown at him, opting for a patient and calculated route to the podium, avoiding much of the drama and contact ahead of him.

“I knew that we had six cars that were very competitive, with very close times, and I knew I just had to keep my nose clean—and that it would come to me,” said Fix. “I had a great car and great circumstances. I love Mid-Ohio. I’ve been here since the '80s; I couldn’t be happier.”

The Trans Am Series will now head North to Road America for Round 8 of the 2015 Trans Am Championship, commencing August 29. For television coverage, all the Trans Am action from Mid-Ohio will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network, with the Next Dimension 100, presented by FirstEnergy, featuring TA and TA3, airing on Saturday, August 29, at 12:00 p.m. ET, and the FirstEnergy Muscle Car Challenge, presented by 3-Dimensional Services, featuring TA2, airing on Saturday, September 5, at 10:00 a.m. ET. In comments submitted to a rule proposed by the Washington State Patrol to update the state’s motor-vehicle equipment standards, SEMA opposed efforts to modify the regulations by lowering the maximum bumper height requirement for passenger vehicles from 22 inches to 20 inches. The association also opposed a change to the current regulations that would remove the 6-inch minimum height requirement for windshields and replace it with a vague, subjective standard.

SEMA contended that with regard to incompatible bumper heights, regulations more stringent than the current standard in Washington will not solve this difference among vehicles in the national vehicle fleet. Vehicles of vastly differing bumper heights—from sports cars to stock pickups, to tractor-trailers and school busses—come off the assembly lines each year.

The proposal also would require that windshields “be of sufficient dimensions to protect the driver and occupants from insects, other airborne objects, and highway surface water and debris, when the motor vehicle is moving forward, or as originally equipped by a recognized manufacturer.”

This proposed change removes an objective requirement that the vertical height of the windshield must be at least 6 inches and replaces it with language that relies on the subjective interpretation of the individual inspector or law enforcement authority, rendering the vehicle owner without clear direction as to lawful modifications.
