This ’17 Jeep Compass—caught testing in Metro Detroit—looks ready to follow in the footsteps of the Cherokee.

2017 Jeep Compass

Jeep will replace both the Compass and Patriot crossovers with one new model to squeeze between the Renegade and Cherokee. The most recent news suggests the Compass name will carry over to the new model.

Based on a stretched version of the Renegade and Fiat 500X platform, this new Compass looks larger than the outgoing model that's been on sale since 2007, with slightly less-blocky styling than the little Renegade.

The new Compass will be one of the first recipients of FCA's new family of engines, dubbed Hurricane, with a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder being one of the sources of power, teamed with the nine-speed automatic. European-bound models should get the same sort of diesels found in the Renegade and Cherokee.

2017 Jeep Compass
The 2017 Compass should make its appearance on the show circuit in early 2016 with an on-sale date by fall.
