BROWN, BECKMAN GET SECOND WINS OF SEASON IN ATLANTA: In one of the most exciting Top Fuel finals this season, Antron Brown held off fellow Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tony Schumacher en route to his second win of the season Sunday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. Brown’s Matco Tools Dragster posted a 3.865-second run that was just enough to keep the seven-time world champion Schumacher from collecting his first Atlanta Dragway win—the only track on the NHRA Full Throttle schedule where he hasn’t won.

“It was tough all weekend,” said Brown. “Qualifying didn’t go like we wanted it to, of course. But our boys just pulled together like they did in Vegas, and when race day comes, the game face goes on. Any given Sunday, anybody can win it.”

With the win, Brown moved from third to second in the Top Fuel point standings, just behind leader Del Worsham, who fell in the first round of eliminations. In Funny Car, Brown’s fellow DSR teammate Jack Beckman also raced to his second win of the season, beating points leader Mike Neff in the final round with a 4.111-second run in his Aaron’s/Valvoline Dodge Charger. It was Beckman’s second win at Atlanta Dragway.

“Any win is a good win,” said Beckman. “But beating a John Force car has kind of got a nice topping on that ice cream sundae if you know what I mean. They are at the top of their game.”

LINE GETS THIRD WIN OF THE SEASON AT SPONSOR’S EVENT; TONGLET COLLECTS FIRST OF 2011 IN ATLANTA: Pro Stock points leader Jason Line showed once again why he has the car to beat in 2011 when he held off fellow teammate Greg Anderson in the final round of Pro Stock competition Sunday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. Line raced to his third win of the season in a final round that saw both Summit Racing Pontiac GXPs in the final at their sponsor’s event.

“It was a good day, it really was,” said Line. “After the semis, Greg and I got down there, and we were excited. We felt we needed a miracle to win because we didn’t feel like we performed like we should’ve. But somehow we got it. But Summit won today, and that was the biggest thing.” With the win and final-round matchup, both Line and Anderson moved into the one and two spots in the Pro Stock point standings. In Pro Stock Motorcycle, defending world champion LE Tonglet returned to the winner’s circle for the first time this season after he held off Karen Stoffer in the final round on his Nitro Fish Suzuki. Tonglet took the No. 1 qualifying position in the final session of qualifying Saturday, then mowed down the competition en route to his sixth career win.

“We’re really happy with the way that Nitro Fish Suzuki is running,” said Tonglet. “It’s really been a fun bike to ride. It’s so smooth, and it’s just hauling butt. There is really nothing more we can do to it.” Tonglet moved from fifth to third in the point standings with the win, while runner-up Stoffer took over the points lead.

NHRA FULL THROTTLE SERIES READY FOR RETURN TO TOPEKA: As the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series marches on, drivers and teams prepare for their second race in as many weeks and the seventh stop of the 2011 season, the NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka. Last season, Tony Schumacher raced to his first win at Heartland Park, one of only two tracks on the NHRA circuit at the time where he had not won, while Funny Car driver Robert Hight won his third consecutive win of the season with his victory over Jeff Arend in the final round. This thing was 2½ miles away and the ground was rumbling. It’s an amazing machine, to say the least. Amazing.”

It was a dominant weekend for Rockstar Energy Drink driver Tanner Foust, who became the first American ever to win an FIA European Rallycross Championship round in Portugal. Foust was the driver to beat at the Pista Automóvel de Montalegre, setting a pair of fastest practice session times in his Rockstar Energy Drink Ford Fiesta on Saturday before scoring two out of three heat wins heading into Sunday's final round. After two rounds in the championship, Foust sits in second place overall, just one point behind defending champion Sverre Isachsen.

Roger Norman Rock Crawls For the Win at W.E. Rock
Roger Norman took the Pro Modified win in the Torchmate Racing Pro Mod No. 8 rock crawler at only his second appearance in the W.E. Rock Western Pro Nationals. The obstacles on Saturday were intense, including a 30-ft. vertical climb called the Terminator. With a couple of tries, Norman pushed the Torchmate rig up over the top and on Sunday he mastered it in one shot. The Kizashi—Suzuki’s sports sedan—has been named the Official Safety Car of the Formula1000 Championship Series. The Suzuki Kizashi Safety Car will be present at all SCCA Pro Racing sanctioned F1K Series events and promotional activities. The Suzuki Kizashi Safety Car will be accompanied by a matching Suzuki Equator pickup truck, which will tow the trailored Kizashi pacer to each event.

Thunderstorms all along the East Coast couldn't slow down Roush Yates Engines this weekend. Roush Yates' horsepower shown through at Virginia International Raceway, Dover International Raceway and Delaware International Speedway as three of their engines found Victory Lane in three different racing series. Jack Roush Jr., driver of the No. 61 Roush Performance Products Mustang Boss 302R, took home the win in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Series at Virginia International Raceway on Saturday afternoon. Carl Edwards captured his third win of the season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series at the rain-delayed 5-Hour Energy 200 at Dover International Raceway. The World of Outlaws Late Model Series came to Delaware International Raceway on Thursday night and Rick Eckert, driver of a Roush Yates powered 450 Chevy Dirt Late Model engine, took home the checkered flag.

Matt Kenseth and crew chief Jimmy Fennig made a remarkable pit stop call with just over 30 laps to go at Dover International Speedway to win the FedEx 400. Kenseth's Ford teammate Carl Edwards led 117 laps during Sunday's race and looked to be a favorite to win, but it was the No. 17 Wiley X Ford Fusion that ultimately found Victory Lane. Starting second to Mark Martin, who did not pit, Kenseth took the lead at the restart and never looked back to get his second win of the 2011 Sprint Cup season.

A SEMA-supported bill to provide for an expanded-use antique vehicle registration class that would allow antique vehicles and replicas to be driven without limitation during the warmer part of the year (April 1 through October 31) has been approved by the Senate Transportation Committee. The bill already passed the full Illinois House of Representatives. Under the bill, expanded-use antiques are limited to traveling to and from car shows, exhibitions, servicing or demonstration during the colder months (November 1 through March 31). Regular antique vehicle registration would still be available for a lower fee to hobbyists who would prefer only operating their vehicle on a limited-use basis throughout the year. The bill will next be considered on the floor of the Illinois Senate by all members.

Legislation that originally sought to increase the age requirement for vehicles eligible for registration as “collector vehicles” was signed into law by Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire. Under the new law, vehicles seeking registration as collector vehicles and the one-time registration fee would still only be required to be at least 30 years old—not 40 years old as the original bill required. The law also deletes provisions that would have created penalties for violating the limited-use provisions. However, the measure still requires the Department of Licensing to establish a method for law enforcement to readily access collector vehicle information using the collector vehicle’s plate number, which will aid in ensuring a plate is being used on its properly assigned vehicle.
