SEMA News—April 2012

LEGISLATIVE AND TECHNICAL AFFAIRS
By Steve McDonald

Law and Order

Law and Order is an update of some of the most recent federal and state legislative and regulatory issues that could potentially impact the automotive specialty-equipment industry. These include issues affecting small-business owners and their employees.

State Update

Aftermarket Parts Regulation, Aftermarket Parts Laws, Auto Legislation, Automotive Legislation, Federal Regulation Aftermarket Parts

Colorado Newer-Car Exemptions: SEMA is supporting legislation to extend the emissions inspection exemption to vehicles that have not yet reached their sixth model year. Current law exempts only vehicles that are four model years old or newer. Colorado already exempts pre-1976 collector cars, kits and street rods from emissions testing. The logic for this trend is clear: Such vehicles do not contribute in significant ways to air quality problems. This logic applies equally to newer cars.

Hawaii Exhaust Noise: For years, SEMA has beaten back legislation that would have essentially banned aftermarket exhaust systems in Hawaii, including one that would have allowed law enforcement officers to seize and impound a vehicle upon making a subjective determination that the vehicle was in violation. This year, SEMA-model legislation was introduced that would allow vehicle hobbyists to install and use aftermarket-modified exhaust systems that meet an objective noise limit. Car owners would be issued a certificate of compliance if a test of the exhaust system demonstrated that the exhaust system emitted no more than 95 decibels.

Iowa Exhaust Noise: SEMA-model legislation that would allow Iowa’s vehicle hobbyists to install and use aftermarket-modified exhaust systems that meet a 95-decibel limit was introduced in the Iowa State Senate. The bill would remove subjective provisions in the law and force compliance with an objectively measured standard, benefitting consumers, the aftermarket industry and police officers who are charged with enforcing the law.

Iowa Antique Registration Fee: SEMA is supporting a bill to allow any vehicle that is 25 years old or older and used only for exhibition, entertainment or educational purposes to be registered for an annual fee of $5. Under current law, the automobile may be registered as a “limited-use” vehicle for a two-year fee of $40. Alternatively, it may be registered without restriction with a regular annual vehicle registration fee.

Maryland Historic Vehicles: Identical legislation to increase the age requirement for vehicles eligible for registration as “historic motor vehicles” has been introduced in the Maryland House and Senate. Under the bill, the age requirement would be raised from 20 to at least 25 years old, and these cars would be prohibited from being used for “occasional transportation.” The measure would also require that an historic vehicle be insured by an historic-vehicle, show-vehicle or antique insurance policy. SEMA is opposing the bill but is working with sponsors to amend the measure to accommodate hobbyists and related businesses.

Maryland Tires: SEMA is opposing legislation that would require the tire industry in the state to affix a label containing the month/year of manufacture and other information on tires. SEMA believes that this legislation would place tire dealers, wholesalers and manufacturers at an unfair disadvantage by requiring additional sidewall information at no value to the motoring public. The date of a tire’s manufacture is already on the sidewall, found as part of the Tire Identification Number. SEMA contends that this legislation may serve to confuse consumers into believing that newer tires answer critical safety concerns. Consumers have greater concerns regarding tire safety, such as proper inflation levels, safe tread depth and overloading of tires/vehicles.

New York Restoration/Custom Shops: A SEMA-supported bill has been introduced in the New York Assembly to exempt restoration and custom shops from the state’s motor vehicle repair shop requirements. This exemption would relieve these shops from the obligation to provide written estimates to customers seeking restoration, rebuild or customization work on specialty motor vehicles or motor vehicles at least 25 years old. The measure would allow restoration and custom shops to accurately inform customers of actual costs and materials, removing vagueness associated with shops attempting to “guess” probable time for unique tasks and probable costs for unique and in some cases yet-to-be-fabricated parts.

Utah Vintage Travel Trailers: A SEMA-supported bill to create a statutory definition of a “vintage travel trailer” and provide for a one-time $40 registration fee was approved by the Utah Senate Transportation Committee and now moves to the floor of the Senate for a vote by all members. The House of Representatives has already approved the bill, under which vintage travel trailers would also be eligible for a special group license plate and would be exempted from wheel cover, mudguard, flap or splash apron requirements. The measure defines a “vintage travel trailer” as a travel trailer, camping trailer or fifth-wheel trailer that is 30 years old or older and primarily a collector’s item that is used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, occasional recreational or vacation use and other similar uses.

Vermont Exhaust Noise: SEMA is opposing legislation to ban motor-vehicle exhaust systems that increase the noise level above the level emitted by the originally installed system. Under the bill, violators would not pass the state’s required inspection. The bill does not provide an opportunity for vehicle hobbyists to install and use aftermarket-modified exhaust systems that meet an objective 95-decibel limit under a fair and predictable test. In addition, the measure does not supply inspectors with an enforcement standard, allowing them to make subjective judgments on whether an exhaust system increases “the noise emitted by the motor vehicle above the level emitted by the exhaust system as originally installed.”

Virginia Restoration Projects: The House of Delegates approved legislation that originally threatened to provide localities with the authority to raise the amount charged from $100 to $500 for an annual license tax for vehicles that do not display current license plates. Working with Virginia hobbyist groups, SEMA negotiated amendments with the bill’s sponsor to 1) totally exempt from the license tax all vehicles 25 years old and older that are undergoing restoration or repair and 2) extend the exemption to all other vehicles (including parts cars) undergoing restoration or repair that are stored on private property for fewer than 60 days. Vehicles stored within a structure would remain exempted from the tax. Under current law, all vehicles—even those 25 years old and older—are subject to the license tax. The bill now moves to the Virginia Senate for consideration.

Washington Restoration/Custom Shops: A SEMA-supported bill to exempt restoration and custom shops from the requirement that they provide written estimates for the repair of any vehicle that qualifies for a “horseless carriage” or “collector vehicle” license plate or is a “parts car,” “street rod” or “custom vehicle” was approved by the Washington State Senate, clearing its way for consideration by the House of Representatives. Under a SEMA-drafted amendment, the bill would allow restoration and custom shops to bill at least every two weeks on a time-and-materials basis. Shops would be able to accurately inform customers of actual costs and materials, removing vagueness associated with shops attempting to “guess” probable time for unique tasks and probable costs for unique and in some cases yet-to-be-fabricated parts.

Washington Inoperable Vehicles: SEMA-model legislation to prohibit cities or towns from enforcing an ordinance, development regulation, zoning regulation or administrative practice that prevents legitimate automobile collectors from pursuing their hobby was approved by the Senate Government Operations Committee but not considered by the full Senate before it died in the legislative session. Under the bill, a limited number of junked, wrecked or inoperable vehicles, including parts cars, stored on private property, would have required only screening from public view if required by local law. The bill will be reintroduced next year.

West Virginia Ethanol: The House of Delegates has introduced a concurrent resolution urging the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to revoke its decision to allow the sale of gasoline with 15% ethanol (E15) until there is clear and convincing scientific evidence that El5 does not pose a risk to any gasoline-powered vehicle or equipment. SEMA is supporting the resolution.

West Virginia Exhaust Noise: The House Transportation Committee passed SEMA-model legislation that would allow West Virginia’s vehicle hobbyists to install and use aftermarket-modified exhaust systems that meet a 95-decibel limit. The bill must now be approved by the Judiciary Committee before moving to the House floor for a vote by all members. Current West Virginia law allows only a muffler originally installed by the manufacturer or an equivalent. The bill would remove subjective provisions in the law and force compliance with an objectively measured standard.

West Virginia Property Tax: SEMA is supporting legislation to provide owners of antique motor vehicles with a cap on property taxes paid on antique motor vehicles. The bill was approved by the House Transportation Committee and will now be considered by the Finance Committee. West Virginia law defines an “antique motor vehicle” as any motor vehicle that is more than 25 years old and is owned solely as a collector’s item. The bill would assess antique motor vehicles for property taxes at their salvage value. That value could not exceed $500. At the most costly rate in West Virginia (approximately 3%), the actual property tax paid by antique motor vehicle owners at the maximum salvage value would be only about $15 per year.

Federal Update

Aftermarket Parts Regulation, Aftermarket Parts Laws, Auto Legislation, Automotive Legislation, Federal Regulation Aftermarket Parts

Ethanol Fuel: The U.S. House Science Committee approved a SEMA-supported bill that directs the National Academy of Sciences to conduct a study on how gasoline blended with 15% to 20% ethanol (E15 and E20) may impact gas-powered vehicles. The analysis would consider a variety of issues, including tailpipe emissions, materials compatibility and fuel efficiency. The House bill would prevent the EPA from introducing E15 into the marketplace until the report has been submitted to the House Science Committee. The bill will now be considered by the full House of Representatives. Ethanol increases water formation in the gas tank, which can then produce formic acid and corrode certain metal, plastic and rubber parts. Last year, the EPA approved the sale of E15 for model-year 2001 and later vehicles. The EPA agreed with SEMA’s concerns that ethanol poses a threat to older vehicles and made it “illegal” to fuel pre-2001 vehicles with E15. However, SEMA contends that a gas-pump warning label will not protect consumers from accidentally misfueling these vehicles. E15 has not yet been marketed. It is still the subject of several lawsuits and legislation to block its sale.

Bonus Depreciation: SEMA joined with the National Association of Manufacturers and a number of other organizations in urging the U.S. Congress to extend the 100% bonus depreciation through 2012. The depreciation had been at 100% since 2010 but dropped to 50% on January 1, 2012. Lawmakers are considering whether to include the extension within a larger bill to extend the payroll tax cuts for the rest of the year. The depreciation provision would allow businesses to write off 100% of the cost of new equipment in the first year rather than depreciating the cost over multiple years. SEMA contends that the bonus depreciation encourages companies to invest in newer, more efficient equipment and spurs sales and creates jobs.

Merging Federal Agencies: President Obama wants Congress to grant him authority to reorganize the federal government, as was permitted for more than 50 years from the Hoover through Reagan administrations. Congress would have an up-or-down vote on each proposed change. The intent is to consolidate functions and reduce duplication in the federal workforce. To start, the White House has proposed merging the Commerce Department and five agencies tied to the business community: the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the Export-Import Bank, the Overseas Private Investment Corp. and the Trade and Development Agency. The new department would oversee trade, investment, business/economic development, technology and economic statistics and be led by a cabinet-level secretary. While Congress considers the issue, President Obama intends to elevate the current SBA Administrator position to a cabinet-level post, at least until the new department is organized.

Tire Fuel Efficiency: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) held a public workshop in February to gather additional information on how to implement a tire fuel efficiency consumer information program. The program is required under a 2007 law. In 2010, NHTSA established the test procedures to be used by tire manufacturers when rating the fuel economy, safety and durability characteristics of replacement tires. However, the agency is still debating how to convey the information to consumers at the point of sale and online. NHTSA is also interested in reviewing the experiences other countries have had in pursuing similar programs. The premise for the program is to allow consumers to compare ratings for different replacement tires and determine the effect of tire choices on fuel economy or the potential tradeoffs between tire fuel efficiency (rolling resistance), safety (wet traction) and durability (tread-wear life). The 2007 law included a SEMA provision exempting tires that have been produced or imported in annual units of less than 15,000 and do not exceed 35,000 tires in total brand-name production.

Design Patents: A bill has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would allow companies to market collision repair parts without infringing a design patent after a vehicle has been marketed for two and a half years. Under current law, a design patent covers the ornamental design for an object having practical utility for a 14-year term. At issue is the recent practice of many automakers to obtain design patents for individual vehicle parts associated with collision repairs, such as fenders, lamps, hoods, bumpers and grilles. Historically, the companies have received design patents for the car’s overall design rather than individual parts. The design patent allows a company exclusive rights to exclude others from copying the product or to license the rights. SEMA is reviewing the legislation. A House committee held a hearing two years ago on a previous version of the bill that would have provided a total exclusion for replacement parts. The auto companies noted that they had invested enormous amounts of money in developing the part designs only to have them copied in a matter of hours and were seeking to protect that investment through rights available under current law. Opponents countered that auto companies were seeking to eliminate competition and that the design patents raise prices for consumers in repair costs and insurance premiums. The current bill seeks to craft a compromise approach.

Counterfeit Products: U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement seized nearly 25,000 counterfeit and pirated goods in fiscal year 2011, a 24% increase from the previous year. The value of the seizures actually decreased by 5%, totaling $179 million for FY 2011. The high-volume/lower-value differential was attributed to an increase in express courier and consolidated shipments and the growth of websites selling counterfeit goods directly to consumers. The top 10 categories of counterfeit products seized were consumer electronics, footwear, pharmaceuticals, optical media, apparel, perfume/cologne, watches, cigarettes, toys/electronic games, auto parts and all other commodities. China continues to be the primary-source country for counterfeit and pirated goods seized, accounting for 62% or $125 million of the total domestic value of seizures.

SEMA Indicators

Revealing Tradeshow, Marketplace and Membership Statistics

Aftermarket Business, Automobile Events, Auto Careers, Automotive Industry News, Automotive Education
2011 SEMA Show exhibitor participation increased in all 12 Show categories, and the total exhibitor number climbed from 1,934 at the 2010 Show to 2,140 at the 2011 event.

No one can foretell the future, at least not with any degree of certainty. But a prudent look at marketplace indicators can often provide insights that savvy businesspeople might interpret for a strategic advantage. What follows is a look at some of the signposts along the current business roadway.

Exhibitors at the 2011 SEMA Show

The 2011 SEMA Show exhibitor statistics provide positive indicators for the automotive specialty-equipment industry, since the number of exhibitors increased in all 12 Show categories. In fact, total exhibitor participation climbed from 1,934 at the 2010 Show to 2,140 at the 2011 event.

The 2011 SEMA Show also saw the largest-ever number of first-time exhibitors, increasing from 549 in 2010 to 613 at the 2011 event. Those positive indicators appear to reinforce the idea that the industry is emerging from the economic downturn. While the expansion was reflected across all segments of the marketplace, the increase in international participation was particularly striking, with about a 25% increase from the previous year.

Buyers at the SEMA Show

Another upbeat sign that the economy might be strengthening is revealed in buyer attendance figures from the 2011 SEMA Show. Retail and installation companies invested in their futures by sending one or more buyers to learn about new products at the Las Vegas venue. For the 2011 event, buyer attendance was the best it’s been since the recession began in 2008. In fact, the 2011 buyer attendance was among the highest ever, topping 60,000 buyers. And about one-quarter of those buyer attendees reported that 2011 was their first SEMA Show. Those first-time buyers were overwhelmingly drawn to see new products, just like veteran attendees.

While buyers came to the 2011 Show primarily to see new products, they also said that they were hoping to get new business ideas and keep up to date on industry trends. More than 90% of them reported success in all three areas, according to a survey conducted at the Show. Over half of them also said that they were interested in expanding their businesses into new areas, either through new products and services that were being introduced at the Show or through existing products that were new only to the buyer’s business.

Most buyers attended the SEMA Show for two to three days and came with an agenda of specific companies to see. Nearly three-quarters of them reported being contacted by exhibitors prior to the Show, and that was often what prompted them to visit specific exhibitors. About half of the buyers reported that they planned to share the information they collected at the SEMA Show with colleagues, customers and other business contacts, so the buyer attendance figures may be only the tip of the iceberg as far as the influence the 2011 SEMA Show will have among professionals in the overall industry.

New Products at the SEMA Show

For the past few years, SEMA has provided buyers with electronic scanners that allow them to acquire information about products they are interested in at the New Products Showcase. Not all buyers use them, but a significant number do, and those scans can be tracked. The 35,000-square-foot Showcase displays included more than 1,800 new products in 17 categories. The top 10 most-scanned products were:

  • DashCommand from Palmer Performance Engineering (Mobile Electronics Product)
  • Kiwi OBD2-to-Smartphone Interface from PLX Devices Inc. (Featured Product)
  • EasyGO Smart Key System from Gryphon Mobile Electronics (Mobile Electronics Product)
  • Pitstop Furniture from Intro-Tech Automotive Inc. (Performance-Racing Product)
  • DashCommand from Palmer Performance Engineering (Performance-Racing Product)
  • EWP Global Double Bank Grill from EWP Global Inc. (Engineered New Product)
  • Gentex Mirror with Prodigy One Navigation from MITO Corp. (Mobile Electronics Product)
  • Prodigy One Pro - TCT System from DIRECTUS (Mobile Electronics Product)
  • BT-431 from Big Time Auto Parts/Austin International Manufacturing Inc. (Exterior Accessory Product)
  • Carbon Fiber Intake Manifold from OZMO Engineering (Performance-Racing Product)

Interestingly, the DashCommand from Palmer Performance Engineering placed in the top 10 twice, since it was entered in both the Mobile Electronics and Performance-Racing product categories. It was the single most-scanned item of the Show and the most-scanned Mobile Electronics product.

It is also telling that four of the top 10 products were from the Mobile Electronics category, edging out Performance-Racing with three in the top 10. However, the category that claimed the top spot for the most scans overall was Performance-Street, followed by Performance-Racing and Off-Road/4-Wheel Drive.

Performance-Street claimed the top spot for the most interest overall in the New Products Showcase with more than 5,300 scans, followed by Performance-Racing with nearly 4,800 and Off-Road/4-Wheel Drive with just under 4,260 scans.

When sorted by category, the most scanned items in the New Products Showcase were:

The F-Series pickup truck was the overall sales leader in the first month of 2012 at 38,493 units, and the F-150 SVT Raptor (shown) garnered the most Spy Photo interest during 2011 in SEMA eNews.

New-Vehicle Sales

In the first month of 2012, just before we went to press with this issue, the Wall Street Journal was reporting that the new-vehicle market was up in nearly every category, and many of the gains were double-digit percentage increases over the same period in 2011. Leading the way were midsize cars with a 25.9% increase to 228,217 units in January and midsize SUVs with a 24.1% increase to 46,986 units.

Fuel prices have obviously taken a toll in some segments, however. For instance, January sales of large cars—already a small slice of the pie—were down 83.5% to only 1,156 units, and the sales of large SUVs had dropped 7.4% to 14,783 units.

The F-Series pickup truck remained the sales leader overall, increasing 7.5% to 38,493 units, and the Toyota Camry/Solara posted an impressive 55.9% sales increase to 28,295 units, claiming the overall second slot in the marketplace. Rounding out the top 10 were the Chevrolet Silverado pickup, the Nissan Altima, the Honda Civic, the Honda CR-V, the Toyota Corolla/Matrix, the Dodge Ram pickup, the Ford Escape and the Chevrolet Impala.

In terms of market share, GM captured the lead with 18.4%, even though the automotive giant’s percentage had dropped a few points from the same period in 2011. Ford, in second place with 14.9% of the market, actually increased sales by 7.3% over the previous period, and Toyota posted a similar percentage gain to claim a 13.6% third-place market share.

Total light vehicle sales for the 24 selling days in January grew to 913,287 units, which was an 11.4% increase over the previous January’s 819,795 units and was another positive indicator leading into 2012.

Spy Photos From SEMA eNews

The raw sales numbers are a straightforward gauge of what the new-vehicle marketplace is doing, but we can also take a more subjective look at where things might be heading. Each week in SEMA eNews, the association’s electronic newsletter, the team at Brenda Priddy & Co. delivers a few Spy Shots—unauthorized photos of vehicles that are currently under development by the automakers. The interest kindled by these cars and trucks, gauged by the number of times they are viewed by the newsletter’s audience, provides a not-so-subtle indicator of where industry professionals might like to develop products.

In the first month of 2012, the Wall Street Journal was reporting that the new-vehicle market was up in nearly every category.

The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor took the honors for the most-viewed Spy Shot of 2011. More than 6,500 subscribers to SEMA eNews opened the photos of the Raptor pickup in the issue released September 8, 2011, and that number is still climbing. The high-performance pickup—411 horsepower and more than 11 inches of front travel and over 12 inches at the rear—is built on the best-selling F-150 platform, so it offers crossover opportunities for many manufacturers involved in the truck market.

The second-highest click total also went to a Ford: The Mustang GT500 garnered more than 6,400 views and further cemented the idea that performance is where many SEMA eNews subscribers might be headed. A gander at some of the other most-clicked selections further strengthens that view. Other top car selections were the Chrysler 300 SRT-8 (6,137 clicks), the Corvette C7 (5,546 clicks), the Ford Taurus SHO Interceptor (4,951 clicks) and the BMW M3 (3,825 clicks)—all obvious performance favorites.

The most-clicked SUV was the GMC Terrain Denali (5,817); the Honda Civic Hybrid (3,294 clicks) drew the most views for compact vehicles; and the Cadillac XTS (3,822 clicks) was the most-viewed car in the luxury category.

The most popular seminar topics at the 2011 SEMA Show were those on customer service, sales and online marketing, and the best attended seminar at the Show was “How to Build Synergy Between Your Advertising, Marketing, PR and Social Media.”

Technology Transfer

The SEMA Technology Transfer program offers another tool for assessing SEMA members’ interest in developing products. More than 300 member companies sought vehicle data through the Tech Transfer program in 2011, sending 2,334 requests for the computer-aided design (CAD) files in the program archives. Of those, suspension files were by far the most requested items, but other areas of interest included body, engine, drivetrain and interior files. As for the top requested group, the LS family of GM engines drew the greatest number of requests.

The program’s directors said that there was a striking surge in requests for data about earlier-generation trucks, such as the 2005 Super Duty and the 2006-2007 Silverado (both 1500 and HD models). As vehicle buyers tended to hold onto their vehicles longer through the recession, some SEMA members might have seen greater demand for their products on those vehicle models and began to revisit their designs.

Measuring Sessions

SEMA also conducts Measuring Sessions periodically throughout the year as the automakers near production of new vehicles. These sessions allow SEMA-member manufacturing companies to use both electronic and traditional measuring tools to check real-world dimensions on near-production prototypes of the new products to ensure that fitment will be correct when the vehicle becomes available at the showroom.

Nine Measuring Sessions were held in 2011, and a total of 82 companies took advantage of the opportunity to take measurements and review fitment details during the sessions. The most attended session was for the Honda Civic, with 47 attendees, followed closely by the Scion iQ, with 42 attendees. The companies that attended included those involved in the manufacture of wheels, brakes, suspension, exterior body components, audio, instrument clusters, seats and engine-bay components.

The fact that the vehicles in the two best-attended sessions were both in the compact car segment may coincide with the increasing interest in those types of cars by fuel-conscious consumers.

Educational Offerings

There is no surprise about what interests the industry when it comes to marketing programs—the Internet. In fact, the most popular webinar programs supplied by the association are those related to online marketing and social media, and the single most downloaded webinar of all is entitled “9 Killer Facebook Advertising Tips.”

That indicator is backed up by further statistics from the educational programming that was offered at the 2011 SEMA Show. The most popular seminar topics were those on customer service, sales and online marketing, and the best attended seminar at the Show was “How to Build Synergy Between Your Advertising, Marketing, PR and Social Media.”

Each year, the association assesses the needs of its membership, seeking insights into the challenges that companies face and then using that information to help develop appropriate educational offerings. Every session is followed by evaluation requests that are used to tailor future programs. (For those interested in becoming a presenter at a SEMA Show seminar, a speaker submission form is available online at.

New SEMA Members

As the economy picks up, SEMA membership follows suit. The association’s core category remains manufacturing, which makes up 41% of all new members. Next are retail businesses at 34% and then distributors at 9%. A combination of all other categories makes up the remaining new memberships.

Many of the new manufacturing members join the association specifically to obtain the member discount offered on exhibit space at the SEMA Show. For the other categories, networking is most often cited as a reason to join on new-member surveys.

Since the 2008 fiscal year when the recession began, there was a decrease in consultants, Internet-based service providers and truck accessory retailers, but there was growth in street rod builders, restorers, car clubs and other associations. Some in the restoration category began their enterprises as hobbyists but now supplement their income in a small business or by restoring vehicles for resale.

While these indicators are open to interpretation, growth and renewed interest seem to be the clear patterns, and that is good news for all.

Revealing Tradeshow, Marketplace and Membership Statistics

SEMA Indicators

Revealing Tradeshow, Marketplace and Membership Statistics

  • Engineered: EWP Global Double Bank Grill from EWP Global Double Bank Grill

Aftermarket Business, Automobile Events, Auto Careers, Automotive Industry News, Automotive Education

The 2011 buyer attendance figure was among the highest ever, topping 60,000 buyers for the first time ever.

Aftermarket Business, Automobile Events, Auto Careers, Automotive Industry News, Automotive Education

  • Engineered: EWP Global Double Bank Grill from EWP Global Double Bank Grill
  • Exterior Accessory: BT-431 from Big Time Auto Parts/Austin International Manufacturing Inc.
  • Interior Accessory: Universal 3-Gauge Mounting Solution from Auto Meter Products
  • Merchandising Display: E-Series D-Series POP Display from Rigid Industries
  • Mobile Electronics: DashCommand from Palmer Performance Engineering

  • Performance-Racing: Pitstop Furniture from Intro-Tech Automotive Inc.
  • Performance-Street: High-Output Superchargers for Camaro/Corvette/GM Truck/Challenger and Mustang from SLP Performance Parts Inc.

  • Street Rod/Custom Car: MasterShift Push Button Shifter from Mastershift
  • Tires and Related Products: 3-in-1 TPMS by JOSN Electronic Co. Ltd.
  • Tools & Equipment: Easypuller from Las Vegas Tool LLC
  • Van/Pickup/Sport-Utility: EZS7-02 from EZ Connector Inc.
  • Wheels and Related Products: Rennen R8 Xtreme Concave Step Lip from Donz Wheelz/Rennen International
  • Featured: Kiwi OBD2-to-Smartphone Interface from PLX Devices Inc.

Truck, SUV & Off-Road New Products

Snapshot: Truck Market on The Upswing

America is reviving its traditional love affair with the light-truck, SUV and off-roading segments. With experts predicting a third consecutive year of rising auto sales in 2012, the light-truck category seems to be leading the way. The Ford F-Series and the Chevrolet Silverado again ranked first and second, respectively, among the top ten vehicles sold last year. Meanwhile, Jeep continued its strong comeback for Chrysler. Many experts credit pent-up consumer demand, while others read from the figures tentative signs of economic recovery. Either way, the growth is welcome.

Of course, this news will probably come as no surprise to 2011 SEMA Show attendees. Buyer-registrants expressing an interest in the Truck/SUV/Van segment were up by nearly 20% over the prior year. Meanwhile, the off-roading category attracted even more buyer interest, rising by more than 22%. Among exhibitors, the South Hall saw 277 booths representing the Truck/SUV/Off-Road category—up nearly 5%—with 64 first-time exhibitors contributing to that steady expansion. All in all, the section encompassed 121,660 square feet of rugged innovation exuding high traffic and optimism.

The following pages offer another glimpse at the Show’s Ideas Alive: New Products Showcase entries dedicated to truck, SUV and off-road applications. You’ll also find interviews with key industry executives analyzing the latest trends within these segments. A common thread is an upbeat feeling for overall product sales, especially among those manufacturing off-roading items. Certainly, there are areas of caution. Regulation and a sluggish economy continue to be concerns and some product categories are still clearly outperforming others. However, after several challenging years, even cautiously positive projections offer just the sort of good news the industry has been waiting to hear.

Contractors still need toolboxes, liners, steps, racks and bed covers for their pickups, and van sales are coming back. Business has increased in van racks, shelving and interior packages. In addition, more consumers and contractors are towing, which has led to increased sales of hitches, wiring and suspension products. The Ford F-150 V6 with Ecoboost has shown great performance in its ability to tow, and midsize pickups such as the Toyota Tacoma are very popular. Let’s hope Ford brings the UK Ranger to the U.S.!

The most significant trends in SUVs include interior and exterior protection along with the increased ability to carry more cargo, with crossovers outselling larger fullsize SUVs. Rooftop boxes and hitch baskets are also hot items.

Internet retailers, automobile manufacturers and industry suppliers are all looking for their share of the retail market and continue to take away sales from traditional retailers. Consumers have become extremely well educated by the Internet even before they come to our location, and they often dictate the sale. The greatest opportunity a dealer has is to go out and work the business and not wait for business to come to you. Fleet and export sales help to increase volume.

We’ve seen a pretty nice bump in sales for the fourth quarter, and I think consumers are ready to loosen up a little and start spending on accessories again.

I am surprised at how well the bed-cover category is doing in the pickup market. I’m anxious to see how well the new Undercover painted program is going to do. If we move even 10% of the units painted that we move in that category overall, it will be a pretty good addition for us.

As vehicle technology increases and consumers have more choices in the way they can make purchases, it will be very important for salespeople to be knowledgeable about the products they are selling.

When you’re competing with online retailers and the growing number of “me too” brands, dealers who are well educated about their product offerings will have the best opportunity for growth.

SEMA offers great professional learning tracks, and PWA has a whole range of product-specific lessons. With consumers armed with as much product information and technology as most main-street retailers, one of the biggest hurdles will be defining and retaining your value proposition in the marketplace.

Christian Hazel, Automobile Events, Offroad Business, Offroad Distributor, Automotive Trade Show, Truck New ProductsThe Jeep market is extraordinarily hot and has actually seen growth in many areas. We’re seeing more and more enthusiasts flock to new Wranglers from other brands. Likewise, many enthusiasts are coming to Jeep from rock-crawl or sand buggies because they serve more than one function: You can hit hardcore trails in your four-door JK with the whole family over the weekend and then commute to work in it during the week.

For ‘07-present Wranglers, the most popular modifications are a simple lift with coil spacers and aftermarket shocks to allow larger 33- to 35-inch tires on aftermarket wheels. A large number of enthusiasts also step up to short- or long-arm suspension systems to clear 35- to 40-inch tires. Further enhancements include front winch bumpers, winches, rocker armor and rear tire carrier bumpers.

Those wishing to retain their 3.8L JK engines clamor for upgrades such as cold-air intakes, headers, after-cat exhaust systems and electronic programmers to bolster the power output and control or bypass factory functions like electronic sway-bar actuation, locker engagement, turning off the ESP and other features.

Overall, we’re seeing lighter, smarter products that deliver protection off-road without a daily-driving weight penalty at the pump.

Christian Hazel, Automobile Events, Offroad Business, Offroad Distributor, Automotive Trade Show, Truck New ProductsOne area of growth has been what I call the “value alternative.” In many cases, there is a dominant brand within a given category that typically has been around for a long time and has cultivated strong consumer demand. This brand typically carries a premium price point and low profit margins. We’ve seen a growth in brands that offer a quality product at a lower price point with higher profit margins and profit dollars.

The challenge for distributors is that strong competition has diminished profit margins. Distributors can sell this “value alternative” product at a lower price point and make more money. It is not good for the name brand (unless it offers the “value alternative”), but the distributor and consumer walk away satisfied.

Success these days is being had by those who are willing to search beyond the norm. An overall positive buying experience is necessary to keep customers on either the wholesale or retail side. Fit the products you offer to the business model you have. Or change the business model to fit the products you are selling. Consumers have more outlets to source the products they want, and they will gravitate to the companies that satisfy their desires.
