More than 160 pre-vetted buyers from nine countries met with 41 SEMA-member exhibitors at the 2013 SEMA Middle East Business Development Conference. Buyers from the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates [UAE]), from Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan traveled to the UAE to meet with manufacturers of parts for those engaged in car collecting, off-roading and motorsports and those seeking upgrades for street-performance vehicles.

The U.S. Department of Commerce partnered with SEMA and the U.S. embassies in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Jordan to lead delegations of buyers to the 2013 SEMA event. U.S. Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Michael Corbin visited the SEMA Hall at the Middle East Motor Tuning Show (MEMTS). In addition, Liz Couch from the International Trade Administration’s auto team at the U.S. Department of Commerce headquarters and representatives from the U.S. Consulate in Dubai participated in this year’s event, which featured more than 80 executives from the 41 SEMA companies.

SEMA delegation members had the opportunity to exhibit at MEMTS, a trade and consumer show at the Sharjah Expo Centre. The delegation also visited leading retailers and installers in Dubai and the neighboring emirate of Sharjah as well as spending an evening networking with buyers at Rabbiah Farm, which is owned by Sheikh Khalid Abdul Aziz Al Qasimi, the chairman of the Liberty Group, one of the largest GM dealers in the world.

The SEMA companies that attended were among a growing number of members that are actively pursuing overseas customers. This often-overlooked strategy to growing a firm’s bottom line can be a very smart move, as 95% of the world’s customers are located beyond U.S. borders. By diversifying, SEMA members can better position themselves for future U.S. economic downturns.

Getting to know fellow SEMA members seeking to sell into a market has always been an added benefit of the association’s international trips. Pictured here from left to right are Ron Delgado, president of Injen Technology; Sean Holly, president and general manager of Crane Cams; Kyle Fickler, vice president of sales for Weld Racing; and Ed Rossi, vice president of sales for Injen Technology. All three companies have participated in the SEMA China Business Development program. The next trip will be held September 11–14.

“The Middle East has tremendous upside for the performance market,” said Rick Trudo, CEO of Florida-based SCT Performance. “We have seen eight-to-one growth over our two years working with SEMA at this event. It plays a big part in our international growth strategy, as do China and Brazil. It helps take the potential inconsistency out of the U.S. market and gives us a strong offshoot to sell into.”

In addition to identifying and prioritizing overseas markets in which to organize business-development programs, SEMA relies on a few other measures. First is the level of passion for vehicles and customizing. For example, do motorists have a culture (or is one ripe for developing) for personalizing and improving the look and/or performance of their vehicles? Second, are there sufficient numbers of consumers in the market who have the funds to customize their vehicles? And third, is there a receptive and forward-thinking government looking to develop the automotive specialty-equipment industry and gain the benefits from this potentially powerful economic engine that generates needed jobs and tax income?

The UAE has grown within less than half a century to become a modern multi-cultural cosmopolitan center. It’s one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets coupled with open borders and an open economy, high per-capita income, a passion for vehicle customization, a desire for U.S. products and a love for light trucks. Below are some of the unique features of the market.

High Degree of Customization

“Automotive styling in the Middle East is a confluence of influences from around the globe,” said David Borla, sales and marketing manager for Borla Performance. “Whether it’s musclecars, high-end exotics, Jeeps, pickups, SUVs, luxury sedans or sport compacts, you will find a cross section of the world’s finest automotive offerings. But it doesn’t stop there. Personalization is just as important as the platforms themselves, and there is a pervasive culture of tailoring vehicles to meet individual specifications, needs or preferences.

“The conditions in the Middle East have created a ‘perfect storm’ that promotes the growth and prosperity of the automotive aftermarket. Beyond the affluence and brand consciousness you see on the surface, there is a growing infrastructure of distribution and service that makes it easy for enthusiasts to buy, install and maintain aftermarket parts. Combine that with great roads and what seems like infinite sand dunes, and you have a giant playground for people who love to play with cars.”

In a recent blog, Audi Middle East Managing Director Trevor Hill said that nearly 50% of the cars sold in the region exhibit some form of individualization, and the Liberty Group, which owns Liberty Motor Sports (LMS), engages in new-car upgrades, motorsports vehicle preparation and classic-car restoration. LMS said that, from its experience, 25% of new-car buyers opted for some form of customization.

The UAE is one of the richest countries in the world, ranking sixth in terms of per-capita income, according to Forbes magazine, and is one slot ahead of the United States. Audi’s Trevor Hill said in a recent interview in local blog “7 Days” that “…there is a population here that has some money, and they are spending some of that money on cars. And there is also a very strong car culture here and also a multi-car-per-family culture. There are a lot of single customers here who have three, four, five cars—which you would never experience in Europe. Some customers would like to have one of each of various types of cars, he said, such as an SUV, a sedan and a high-powered sports car.”

“We certainly see potential for our products in this market,” said trip participant Eric Blackburn. “We specialize in Jeep and FJ Cruiser accessories, and both vehicles are gaining popularity in the region. Most customers have a relatively large disposable income, and the upper-middle class to upper class are extremely wealthy and able to purchase the best money can buy.”

Kevin Floody of K&N agreed, noting that many car owners are obviously very willing to spend money on vehicle modifications and that there is a demand for quality aftermarket automotive products.

Quickly Growing Economy and Quickly Growing Vehicle Market

The UAE’s economic growth is back on track after the global economic slowdown of 2009 and 2010. Last month, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority revealed that, with the high ratio of cars per household, 1.13 million vehicles were registered in the emirate by the end of 2012—a figure that is up by more than 106,000 vehicles since 2010.

The automotive specialty-equipment market also enjoyed similar growth. The wholesalers and retailers that the SEMA group met were quite optimistic about the growth of the market over the next three to five years.

“We are glad to say the market is growing,” said MEMTS organizer Roman Gavrilin. “More new companies have opened their doors across the country, and many new manufacturers from abroad came to the UAE after seeing tremendous perspectives for expanding. The demand for car modification in the country is fueled in part by the country’s high economic growth. The demand for performance tuning and sport vehicles is steady, with good forecasts for the future.”

In a nod to the popularity of U.S. culture in the region as well as the recognition that the UAE has a strong enthusiast base, Fast and Furious 7, to be directed by James Wan, will start shooting in September in the UAE, with a release to theaters expected in July 2014. In addition, TV shows such as TLC’s “Overhaulin’,” MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” and Universal Studio’s previous The Fast and the Furious films have played an important role in raising awareness of U.S. products and culture.

U.S. products are well-received in the UAE. Given the region’s open economy, not only are U.S.-branded vehicles making their way to the country and region, but it is also an important hub for vehicles built to U.S. specs. According to the American Policy Council—a U.S.-based policy organization for Ford, Chrysler and GM—the GCC region is one of the most important export destinations for U.S.-built and certified motor vehicles. The GCC is the second-largest U.S. passenger vehicle export market.

Brand awareness for U.S. products is also strong. Coverking CEO Steve Gupta, who was participating in his first trip to the Middle East with SEMA, said that the market is full of automotive enthusiasts, and the buyers met by the SEMA group seemed to know most U.S. brands.

Said SCT’s Trudo: “With American brands being so big in the region and the passionate interest that has been shown, we have seen a huge growth from tuners to dynos sold in the region. The UAE loves American brands and is passionate in displaying ‘Made in America.’ It sells in the UAE and throughout the
Middle East.”

In fact, research shows that the UAE is a hub for all things American. In a March 2013 report, the U.S. Congressional Research Service, the official research arm of the U.S. Congress, said that U.S. trade with the UAE is a significant issue because the UAE is the largest market for U.S. exports to the Middle East. In 2012, the report said, U.S. firms exported nearly $22 billion worth of goods to the UAE. More than 1,000 U.S. companies have offices there, and there are 60,000 Americans working in the UAE.

SEMA Indicators

A Look at Specialty-Equipment and Automotive Market Signposts

Buyer, exhibitor and media registration for the 2013 SEMA Show are now open and available online at www.SEMAShow.com/register.
The search for marketplace information is never-ending. The SEMA Show is a prime indicator of market trends, revealing both attitudes and new offerings.

The search for marketplace information is never-ending. As the economy fluctuates, new technologies emerge and changing tastes shape sales, savvy industry professionals constantly look for indicators that will aid them in making business decisions based on more than mere supposition. While no one can accurately and consistently predict the course of things, knowing which way we’re going can confirm whether we’re facing a sunset or the dawn.

Exhibitors

The SEMA Show is a prime indicator of market trends, revealing both attitudes and new offerings. The majority of exhibitors at the 2012 SEMA Show generally felt that attendee traffic showed not only diversity, but also increased numbers over 2011, which suggests further recovery in the economy. In addition, exhibitors said that buyers seemed to be more willing to spend money at the 2012 Show, perhaps even approaching pre-recession levels.

Exhibitors said that the quality of buyers—those who were actual decision makers—had also increased over the previous year. While many companies use the SEMA Show as a networking event that is not necessarily focused on making direct sales, 34% of exhibitors reported receiving orders in 2012, compared with 30% the previous year, and about 40% were optimistic that post-Show orders would increase compared with 2011. More than 50% of attendees sampled by SEMA Show organizers—both exhibitors and buyers—said that they planned to increase their trade-show attendance in 2013, which is another indicator that business is on an upward track.

Buyers

The impression that there was more spending at the 2012 SEMA Show was reflected in a post-event survey of attendees who indicated that they were buying at the 2012 SEMA Show. That sampling said that average purchase amounts had risen from $21,416 at the 2011 event to $35,738 at the latest SEMA Show. Nearly 90% of buyers at the 2012 Show said they would place orders with exhibitors in the next 12 months, with almost 60% saying they would be purchasing a product that was newly introduced at the 2012 Show.

The percentage of new or first-time buyers was also up from 25% of those in attendance in 2011 to 27% in 2012, though the largest number—about 40%—had attended between two and five previous SEMA Shows. (Interestingly, 33% had been to more than six SEMA Shows, and a full 5% of those in attendance had been to more than 20.) The first-timers said that word of mouth and the search for new products brought them to the event, and that was also the reason most often given by frequent attendees to the Show. But 64% of attendees also cited business conditions ranging from “some positive” to “significantly positive” as the reason they’d come to the Show.

While buyers were ready to spend, both before and after the Show, they were also drawn to the event by specials and discounts. Nearly 75% said they had taken advantage of exhibitors’ SEMA Show deals—up from 68% in 2011. And a significant number of attendees said that they would be sharing the information they gathered at the Show with their business colleagues and customers as well as family and friends.

New Products

The new products on display at the SEMA Show are naturally a substantial reason for the event’s continual success, so the popularity of product categories and specific products may provide indications of where the markets are headed.

The SEMA Show New Products display is naturally a substantial reason for the event’s continual success, so the popularity of product categories and specific products may provide further indications of where the markets are headed. Many buyers who study the more than 2,000 displays use electronic scanners to tag items for which they are interested in obtaining additional information. The scans provide an indication of where particular emphasis might be placed. The “Exterior” product category drew the greatest number of scans at the 2012 SEMA Show, followed by “Performance Street,” “Off-Road” and “Tools & Equipment.” But the number-one and -two most-scanned items—and five of the top 10—were housed in the Mobile Electronics section. The top-10 most-scanned products were:

It’s also instructive to take a look at the most-scanned product in each of the display categories. The only double top-scanned company was Putco Inc. with its LED Interior Stick Festoons in the Interior Accessory category and its G3 LED DayLiner Point-of-Purchase Display in the Merchandising Display grouping. The individual top-scans items in the 17 product categories were:

  • Soft-Sanders Six-Piece Set from Style-Line Corp. International (Collision Repair & Refinish Product)
  • Square-Style Patented Custom Smooth Door Handle from Kindig-It Design (Engineered New Products)
  • TruXedo B-Light BP from Extang/TruXedo/UnderCover (Exterior Accessory Product)
  • Wheel Bands by RimPro-Tec North America (Featured Products)
  • LED Interior Stick Festoons from Putco Inc. (Interior Accessory Product)
  • G3 LED DayLiner Point-of-Purchase Display from Putco Inc. (Merchandising Display)
  • Capacitive Touch Rear View Mirror With GPS from Intraphex (Mobile Electronics Products)
  • KC Race Bar from Bulldog Lighting-KC Hilites (Off-Road/4-Wheel Drive Product)
  • MSD Atomic EFI, Master Kit Packaging from MSD Performance (Packaging Display)
  • TrackMat from BedRug Inc. (Performance-Racing Product)
  • DashCommand from Palmer Performance Engineering (Performance Street Product)
  • Flushmount Dually, SRM and SRQ LED Lights from Rigid Industries (Powersports Product)
  • Classic Car Sequential Taillights from Easy Performance Products (Street Rod/Custom Car Products)
  • LAC Tire Printer from LAC Corp. (Tire and Related Product)
  • SunSpot Infrared Heater H-300 from Cool-A-Zone (Tools & Equipment)
  • AirBedz Lite Truck Bed Air Mattress from Pittman Outdoors “AirBedz” (Van/Pickup/Sport-Utility Product)
  • 17-in. Steel Artillery Wheel from Wheel Vintiques (Wheel and Related Product)

New-Vehicle Sales

Recent new-car sales data also show some rather uplifting trends. The New York Times reported that 2012 U.S. sales were up about 13% over 2011, with a total of about 14.5 million vehicles moving out of showrooms, and the good news seemed to be continuing into the new year. In figures before we went to press with this issue, The Wall Street Journal said that total light vehicle sales were up 14.2% in January 2013 compared with January 2012. The top category was midsize cars, which slightly led the crossover utility vehicle (CUV) segment in popularity, 255,772 units to 225,163. In fact, CUVs showed the largest year-over-year January percentage gains at 20.2%, with small cars next at an 18.1% increase.

The only category losers, it appeared, were large cars, large SUVs and minivans. Large cars—whose sales have been declining for some time—suffered the greatest January damage at -9.3% (only 239 units for the month), while large SUV sales were off by -7.5% at 3,667 units. The minivan slippage was a mere -1.7%, but it may lend credence to the idea that the vastly more popular CUV segment is overtaking the category.

The Ford F-Series remained the number-one selling vehicle in January 2013 with 46,841 units sold, a 21.7% increase over the previous January. Ford’s lead was followed by the Chevrolet Silverado with 35,445 units sold, up 21% year over year.

The first car on the top-20 list was the Toyota Camry (31,897 units, a 12.7% increase), followed by the Honda Accord, which was up a whopping 75.2% over the previous January with 23,924 units sold. The only other vehicles to score similar percentage gains were the Ford Fusion in the number-six spot with 22,399 sales (up 64.5% over last January) and the Ford Explorer with a sales increase of 52.6% at 15,207 units.

General Motors held the greatest market share overall for January with 18.7%, slightly up from the previous year, with Ford claiming the number-two spot with 15.9%, Toyota in the third slot at 15.1% and Chrysler holding fourth with 11.3%.

  • G3 LED DayLiner Point-of-Purchase Display from Putco Inc. (Merchandising Display)
  • Capacitive Touch Rear View Mirror With GPS from Intraphex (Mobile Electronics Products)
  • KC Race Bar from Bulldog Lighting-KC Hilites (Off-Road/4-Wheel Drive Product)
  • MSD Atomic EFI, Master Kit Packaging from MSD Performance (Packaging Display)
  • TrackMat from BedRug Inc. (Performance-Racing Product)
  • DashCommand from Palmer Performance Engineering (Performance Street Product)

Paint, Body & Equipment at SEMA Show
The Society of Collision Repair Specialists will offer seminars and courses at the 2013 SEMA Show as part of its Repairer-Driven Education program.

Since the Repairer-Driven Education (RDE) series first premiered at the SEMA Show in 2010, the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) has used the forum to present the industry with world-class education that speaks to the heart of issues faced in today's collision-repair businesses. The education program is presented each day of the SEMA Show, and features some of the industry's most respected subject matter experts.

"Our single greatest objective since day one has been to deliver education, which provides tangible information that can be immediately implemented when our attendees return home to their businesses," shared Ron Reichen, SCRS chairman. "In essence, we seek out subject matter that is well-delivered and relevant to what repairers want and need to know. We want topics so relevant and urgent to the changing landscape of the industry, that they simply can't afford to not attend. In my opinion, no other venue provides as much value and opportunity aimed at improving collision-repair business and profitability as the SEMA Show does."

For 2013, SCRS has enhanced the program with the addition of three designated tracks through the RDE series. All RDE courses can be purchased à la carte, based on attendee interests, but the tracks are designed to help those with a particular focus attend a series of course selections that all speak to a purpose.

"The track program was actually a proposal from one of our previous attendees," shared SCRS Executive Director Aaron Schulenburg. "It was suggested that with so many education options in our program, they wished there was a way to determine which selections therein that spoke most to what they were looking to gain. It is really important to us to use attendee input and feedback as a primary driver for program development, and it made so much sense to create sub-categories in the manner suggested."

To address the trends reshaping the industry, SCRS created three categories of educational topics to capture the collision-repair business professional's imagination:

  • Understanding your business: This track is designed to provide thorough training around fundamental components of running a successful collision-repair business. The topics extend through estimating and blueprinting, workflow and cycle time impact, profit center management, marketing and online reputation management. Quite simply, if collision-repair business owners and operators better understand the core of their business, they can better manage its success.
  • Enhancing your business: This category focuses on business development and improvement, such as production techniques, office efficiency, processes and documentation, creating a turn-key business, mechanization, automation, equipment and systems. If attendees want to target specific customer bases or types of work, increase your ability to get paid for necessary operations and be prepared for current and future technologies they are going to need in their repair business, this is the track that will give them the tools, resources and knowledge to accomplish that.
  • Positioning your business: Most business owners today are asking themselves one of two questions: How do I compete? Or, how do I sell my shop for the most value? This category will present solutions to both. It includes focused strategies for competing against consolidation, growth strategies, preparation on how to sell your business or purchase your competitor and how to make your business as valuable as possible, whether you plan to continue to operate it, or market it to others. It includes a glimpse into future technology trends as well as potential business trends based on varying market shifts, and all of it is going to be relevant to your business.
Regardless of business goals or specific motivations for attending the SEMA Show, SCRS' Repairer-Driven Education series has the content that will provide attendees with a greater return on investment from their experience. There is no better place in the industry to become inspired and informed.

The full list of all the sessions offered in each of the tracks can be found online. The 2013 RDE series is currently sponsored by supportive industry organizations, such as SEMA, PPG Refinish, GM Genuine Parts, BASF Refinish, Ford Motor Co., AkzoNobel Coatings and Sherwin-Williams.
