Honda Builds Real-Life Forza Civic SI Coupe

Honda teamed up with Forza Motorsport, considered by many to be the world's hottest racing game franchise, to unveil the winning entry of the Forza Motorsport Civic Si Design Contest. This one-of-a-kind Civic is among the first vehicles from the Forza Motorsport community to be brought from virtual world to the real world.

Selected from nearly 170 entries, the winning 2014 Civic Si Coupe design was created by Forza gamer Tiffany Labedz of Phoenix, and was selected as the top design by more than 17,000 members of the Xbox Forza community.

"At Honda, we love meeting our customers where their passion lies, and the racing and custom car design in Forza Motorsport is definitely a passion for so many Honda and Civic enthusiasts," said Tom Peyton, assistant vice president of advertising with American Honda Motor Co. Inc. "Taking an immersive gaming experience like Forza and bringing it to life here at the Chicago Auto Show will make for an exciting exhibition and a real-life demonstration of how cars and gaming are increasingly intertwined."

In addition to the custom Civic on display, Chicago Auto Show attendees can be among the first to play the new Honda Legends Car Pack for Forza Motorsport 5 on Xbox One. The new car pack features the redesigned ’14 Civic Si Coupe, the ’84 Mugen CRX and the ’94 Prelude, all available for download on Xbox One. This is the second straight year that Honda and Forza Motorsport have teamed up to bring gamers exclusive Honda-branded content.

Nissan Shows Diesel Powered Nissan Frontier

Diesel Powered Nissan Frontier
Diesel-powered Nissan Frontier

The Frontier Diesel Runner, which is based on a Frontier Desert Runner 4x2 model, was created to gauge the market reaction to a Nissan mid-size pickup with a diesel engine and plot a potential future direction for the Frontier. It arrives a mere six months after the announcement of a partnership with Cummins Inc. to provide a 5.0L turbo diesel V8 in the next-generation Titan full-size pickup, which will arrive in calendar year 2015.

At the heart of the Frontier Diesel Runner is a 2.8L four-cylinder diesel engine producing nearly 200 hp and more than 350 lb.-ft. of torque, while increasing fuel economy 35% over a V6-powered ’14 Frontier 4x2. Special exterior modifications include a custom "Arrest Me Red" and Matte Silver paint treatment, aerodynamic full-bed tonneau cover and tailgate spoiler, and a transparent acrylic hood insert that provides a window to the engine bay, where all powertrain-related elements continue the red theme.

The 16-in. wheels, borrowed from a Frontier PRO-4X, have been treated with a special two-tone paint—Arrest Me Red for the rear wheels and silver in front, each accented by satin black paint. The brake calipers have also been custom painted in contrasting colors—silver rear and red front.

The Frontier Diesel Runner's interior mirrors the silver and red exterior design, with red accents throughout and carbon-trimmed seats and panels. The front and rear seats feature carbon-print leather appointments with grey accent stitching and black-on-black "Tracks" embroidery. The carbon film-wrapped instrument panel is highlighted by red-tined gauges and a special black-faced diesel-specific three-gauge pod on top of the C-cluster.

Bestop Director of Sales and Marketing Jim Chick explains why the company attends the King of the Hammers event.

By Carr Winn

The eighth-annual Griffin King of the Hammers Presented by Nitto Tires wrapped up Saturday, February 8, in the Johnson Valley, California, OHV area. The Hammers, as it is affectionately known, brings together off-road enthusiasts from across the country, and around the world, to share in eight days of adrenaline-fueled camaraderie and passion for off-road action. Billed as "the toughest one-day off-road race in the world," more than 130 drivers from 31 states and eight countries competed in this year's event.

There is only one class that races in the Hammers—the unlimited four-wheel-drive class known as the ULTRA4s. The top 20 drivers from 2013 were automatically qualified for this year's competition. Additional drivers qualified by racing in the 2013 ULTRA4 Racing Series or through a partnering race organization. The remaining spots were awarded during the 4 Wheel Parts qualifying rounds held during Hammers week.

In 2013, Southern California resident Randy Slawson from Colton, California, was crowned the King of the Hammers. Hoping for a repeat victory, Slawson mashed through the course in pursuit of the crown again this year, but a brakeline problem took his car out of contention during his third lap. This year, Loren Healy reclaimed the title having previously won the Hammers in 2010. For complete race standings, visit ultra4racing.com.

Throughout the week, spectators also had the opportunity to explore Hammertown. This special area, adjacent to the course finish line, was filled with manufacturers' exhibits, a giant screen with a live video feed from the course and a special stage designed for racers to literally drive up and discuss their experience on the course.

Among the many manufacturers at Hammertown, Bestop had a booth highlighting its newest products, and Director of Sales and Marketing Jim Chick explained the value of supporting the King of the Hammers event.

MAHLE Service Solutions, the Official Name for MAHLE's Aftermarket Tool and Equipment Division

MAHLE Team Leader Bill McKnight gives an example of how the company leverages OE technology and applies it to the aftermarket performance business.

MAHLE Aftermarket Inc. has announced that MAHLE Service Solutions is now the official name for the company’s division specializing in the tool and equipment segment. MAHLE RTI, formerly RTI Technologies located in York, Pennsylvania, was purchased January 1, 2013, and is a key component of the new division.

According to Max Dull, general manager for MAHLE Service Solutions in North America, the MAHLE RTI name will transition fully under the MAHLE Service Solutions banner at AAPEX 2014. Dull points out that the new division name will not affect the company’s brand names currently on the market. Those include Arctic PRO A/C service equipment, NitroPRO nitrogen tire inflation systems and FluidPRO fluid exchange systems.

“We are excited to share with the aftermarket the new name for our tool and equipment division which is all about providing solutions to the difficult challenges that technicians face each day,” said Dull. “The new name also positions us for future growth beyond our current offering of automotive maintenance equipment.”

MAHLE Service Solutions, as a division of MAHLE Aftermarket, specializes in the development, manufacturing and distribution of automotive maintenance equipment, including air-conditioning service, fluid exchange and nitrogen tire-inflation systems. The MAHLE Aftermarket business unit specializes in spare parts, harnessing the company's experience in the series production of original equipment and applying the technology to its automotive aftermarket product range. During the recent Media Trade Conference, hosted by SEMA's own Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council (MPMC), team leader Bill McKnight highlighted a prime example of leveraging OE technology into MAHLE's aftermarket performance business.

“The first full year of the Lift Inspector Certification Program was in 2013, and we made great progress,” says R.W. “Bob” O’Gorman, ALI president. “We set out to build a resource for lift users, and there is now a stable of 100 Certified Lift Inspectors ready to provide service whenever and wherever inspections are needed. I’m happy to welcome Nicholas to the Certified Inspector family and look forward to hitting many more milestones as the current candidates work their way through the program.”

The ALI Lift Inspector Certification Program was launched in late 2012. Lift inspectors certified by ALI have been tested to prove they are competent to thoroughly inspect vehicle lifts in accordance with the ANSI standard governing vehicle lift inspection and in support of OSHA’s General Duty Clause, as well as provincial requirements in Canada. The Product Development Expo, fueled by the SEMA Garage, and sponsored by the SEMA Data Co-op (SDC) and the Emerging Trends and Technology network (ETTN), will be held Thursday, April 10, 2014, at SEMA headquarters in Diamond Bar, California.

"The race to define future vehicles is on," said John Waraniak, SEMA vice president of vehicle technology. "Competition for the future of the auto industry is rapidly evolving between Silicon Valley and Detroit. The recession accelerated the auto industry’s transformational changes required for growth as well as reinvention and product development of vehicles—from mechanical to electrical systems, from standalone to connected, and from mass markets to personalization and customization. The changes we are going through today will impact the performance aftermarket industry for decades to come. SEMA's Product Development Expo is your chance to learn how to compete and win as new technologies, tools and applications are deployed."
