For many of you, “politics” is a four-letter word, but there’s a lot happening in our nation’s capital that affects your bottom line. SEMA’s Political Action Committee (SEMA PAC) is working hard to ensure that our rights as enthusiasts are protected, but we can’t do it alone.

Whether it’s keeping harmful ethanol out of collector cars, reducing burdensome taxes or ensuring you can title your hot rod, there is a need to be engaged as government meddles with our industry. Don’t believe us? Watch this important video message from Corky Coker of the Coker Group.

Make your voice heard this election year by visiting SEMAPAC.com and becoming SEMA PAC Approved. The more people that join, the louder our voice and the greater our ability to impact change.

  councils
SEMA council and network leaders.

Nominations for a Select Committee seat on one of SEMA's councils and professional networks are now open. Do you have a business challenge that goes beyond the walls of your shop? See a change in the market that needs to be addressed? Have an idea but need some industry muscle to make it happen? If so, it may be time for you to volunteer as an industry leader and make your voice heard.

The Select Committee serves as the volunteer leadership body for the entire membership of a specific council or network. The individual volunteers are in tune with their markets and have the drive needed to influence change. Elected volunteers are entrusted to direct SEMA resources toward building solutions to matters facing the industry, benefits and opportunities that help companies succeed and prosper.

There are currently 10 council and network groups within SEMA, each representing a collection of members who share a common business purpose or market segment. Councils work to identify related business goals, issues and challenges for member companies that require a special focus by the association, while the professional networks are free for all employees of SEMA-member companies.

Find out who is currently involved in SEMA's councils and networks, and follow the link to the group that supports your interests.

Get started now by using the online council nominations form to nominate yourself or another SEMA-member company employee. It's quick and easy to complete, and no printing or faxing is required. Nominations are due by 5:00 p.m. (PDT), Friday, March 21, 2014.

For more information about SEMA's councils and networks or the nomination and election process, contact Senior Council Coordinator Gina Ledesma at ginal@sema.org.

  scholarship
Students preparing for careers in the automotive or auto parts industries may be eligible for financial awards of up to $5,000 through the 2014 SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund (SMSF).

Applications for automotive scholarships through the 2014 SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund (SMSF) are due March 28, 2014. Students preparing for careers in the automotive or auto parts industries may be eligible for financial awards of up to $5,000.

The SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund is dedicated to fostering the next generation of automotive aftermarket industry leaders and innovators. Scholarship awards range from $2,000 to $3,000, with $5,000 going to the top student. Assistance is available for career paths in the automotive industry in accounting, engineering, race car driver/crew, administration, information technology, sales/marketing, advertising, manufacturing, technicians, design/graphics, photo/journalism and transportation.

“Students coming through the SEMA Scholarship Program have demonstrated great potential and share the enthusiasm and passion that has fueled our industry,” said Zane Clark, SEMA education director. “Our hope is that we’ll continue to attract highly qualified students who will contribute and make strong, positive impacts in our industry.”

Unlike financial aid and student loans, the SEMA Memorial Scholarship is a one-time award that does not have to be paid back. Awards are granted to eligible applicants based on academic achievements, work experience, community involvement, essay content and recommendations. Students may re-apply each year, provided that they still meet the eligibility criteria.

A loan forgiveness award is also available to recent graduates who are working for SEMA-member companies and paying off existing student loans. Details and applications for both the scholarship and the loan-forgiveness awards are available at www.sema.org/scholarships.

The application deadline for all SMSF awards is March 28, 2014. For additional details, visit www.sema.org/scholarships or contact Juliet Marshall at julietm@sema.org or 909-978-6655.
