Background—Exploring the Potential for a Midsize Van in the U.S. Market

Commercial vans are used mainly by businesses and public services, with a wide array of uses, including package/freight delivery, trade vehicles for carpenters and electricians, mobile repair workshops, emergency services, luxury transportation and even mobile pet grooming. Moreover, they have also captured the imagination of private owners, who use them not only as transportation, but also to realize their passions.

The Sprinter Van revolutionized the large van segment in the United States, bringing the tall, efficient and ergonomic European van to American customers and, incidentally, providing a vehicle template for other manufacturers that are only now bringing in their own European-style vans.

Now, Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) is exploring the potential of the midsize commercial van segment in the United States. The concept offers up to 194 cu. ft. of cargo space or seating for up to eight passengers in a versatile, compact, efficient vehicle. Many American customers have indicated strong interest in this midsize van concept, according to MBUSA, and the OEM is consequently now evaluating the U.S. market opportunity for the commercial van, targeting mainly small- and midsize businesses that transport cargo and passengers.

A Midsize Van at the SEMA Show

The SEMA Show, with its diverse attendees, provides a natural platform to explore the potential of the midsize van platform. A showcase of diverse van-based designs, developed and executed by tuners and upfitters across the United States, will allow attendees to experience the full scope of the van’s potential and allow them to imagine the different uses for the vehicle. The SEMA Show will also be the first time when this new concept is shown in the United States, presenting a unique opportunity to build awareness for the concept while gathering feedback on unique vehicle variations.

Project Vehicle Proposal

A midsize commercial van can provide the basis for numerous different vehicle concepts and designs that require a larger vehicle and deliver more excitement and utility than is possible in a passenger car. To explore these possibilities, MBUSA will host a tuning and upfitting competition to develop and build the most exciting midsize van concepts. Tuners and upfitters across the United States are invited to propose showcar concepts based on the midsize van. MBUSA will select the four most exciting concepts to be realized. Each vehicle’s creators will receive a pre-production van and a budget of up to $50,000 to make vehicle modifications based on their design. All four vehicles will be displayed in the Mercedes-Benz Vans booth at the 2014 SEMA Show, and they will compete with one another for the most votes by SEMA Show attendees and Internet voters.

Each proposal should focus on one or two of the different uses for which the midsize van would be perfect—and take it to the extreme. Concept ideas include:

• Ultimate Roadtrip Van: The vehicle you’d want to take on the longest, best vacation of your life.
• Perfect Mobile Office: Everything you need to be productive and comfortable on the road in one compact package.
• Definitive Tailgating and Party Van: The van that provides the right setting for a party anytime, anywhere.
• Success on Wheels: The van that lets you grow your business by taking it mobile, taking advantage of the space the midsize cargo van offers.
• Limo on Steroids: The van for group transportation with over-the-top style.

MBUSA is open to considering any concept that takes the van to the next level. Concepts that focus on commercial applications are especially welcome. A total of four concepts will be selected to be built by aftermarket companies and displayed to compete with one another at the SEMA Show. Only one project vehicle per theme will be awarded.

Following the Show, the four aftermarket companies will take possession of the vehicle for the next 12–18 months for the purposes of their approved marketing plan, but MBUSA reserves the right to schedule the vehicles for display with written notice in advance. Vans will ultimately be returned to MBUSA at the conclusion of the promotional period with all modifications intact, which become the property of MBUSA.

Aftermarket companies and upfitters that wish to apply for this opportunity must submit proposals that include the following information:

• Executive Summary – One-pager to focus on the key benefits of the proposal and prior experiences to support this new role.
• Vehicle Description – List of specific modifications and accessories to be added, including a total customer pay price, along with a color rendering.
• Examples of previous project vehicles by the applicant.
• Promotional plan – Detailed marketing/PR plan for the show vehicle over the next 12–18 months.
• Timing – Specific dates, vehicle delivery and project timing and completion date. Vehicles must be completed by October 20, 2014.
• Commitment to feature the vehicle with the Mercedes-Benz logos and nomenclature intact with visible likeness to the production vehicle.
• Feature the van with its original engine, though power-boosting accessories are acceptable.
• Commit to creating weekly progress reports during the vehicle build process, including photos.
• Allow photo/video production by MBUSA during the build process, if requested by MBUSA.
• Booth number for their exhibit space at the 2014 SEMA Show.
• All costs associated with preparing the response to this Request For Proposal shall be borne solely by the aftermarket companies/upfitters.
• Finally, this Request For Proposal does not constitute a binding agreement between the aftermarket companies/upfitters and MBUSA. It should be made clear that a project vehicle will only be awarded upon the execution of an agreement by MBUSA and the aftermarket companies/upfitters, as required by MBUSA.

Dodge has announced its project vehicle program for 2014. This program offers companies the opportunity to get a jump start on the competition by securing one of the new ’15-MY Challengers in advance of market availability. The upcoming launch of Scat Pack and Shaker heritage models provides an opportunity to stand out in a competitive market. The automaker requests that project-vehicle proposals be submitted per the criteria outlined below.

Proposal Submission Deadline: August 1, 2014
Award Recipient Notification Date: by August 22, 2014

All project vehicle requests must be submitted and meet the following Dodge Project Vehicle Program criteria:

• E-mail a one-page project summary—must be received by August 1, 2014. Include bullet points for:
• Vehicle Theme: Describe very clearly your overall build theme, target audience, etc.
• Proposed vehicle modifications
• New products potentially being developed for the Challenger through the project
• Promotional, media and social media outreach plan prior to and beyond the SEMA Show, such as:
  • Tour of events (location and dates)
  • Specific magazine feature articles
  • Online promotion
  • Company advertising featuring the vehicle
  • Additional exposure
• Examples of previous project vehicles and promotional activities by the applicant
• Detailed renderings of the proposed vehicle in .jpg format
• Vehicle display location at the 2014 SEMA Show

Requirements:

• Preservation of vehicle badging, not to be painted
• High level of paint and build quality; no wraps
• Commit to periodic design and build check-ins
• Retain vehicle insurance totaling at least $3 million until the completion of the two-year contract.
• Order a California-certified vehicle if you intend to register or use the vehicle primarily in California or any other state that has adopted California emissions standards. Failure to do so may subject you to a state fine.
• Be financially and technically capable of building a one-off show car without financial or parts support from Dodge.
• Be willing to partner with other non-competing aftermarket companies or enthusiast publications to enhance the vehicle project.
• A history of active promotion of vehicle projects with an established marketing plan.
• Commit to creating bi-weekly progress reports during the vehicle build process and product development, including photos, video and commentary.
• Grant Dodge the right to use content from the bi-weekly progress reports and assist Dodge in acquiring usage rights from any sponsors or individuals whose logos or images might appear in that content.
• Commit to make the vehicle available to Dodge or its dealers, if requested, for additional shows and exhibits for a minimum of two years from the initial delivery date.
• Commit to provide quarterly reports to Dodge regarding media coverage and event activity for the project vehicle for a minimum of two years from the initial delivery date.
• Commit to have the completed vehicle available for photography in California by Monday, October 27, 2014.

Trim Parts Holdings Corp. has announced the acquisition of Mr. Mustang, making the company the latest member of a rapidly growing family of top-tier restoration parts manufacturers. Stacey David’s GearZ to Air on Velocity

Rattletrap Productions announced that "Stacey David’s GearZ" is coming to Velocity by Discovery in October and November 2014. The show will air at 8:30 a.m. (EST) Sunday mornings on the Velocity channel. Velocity is a Discovery network primarily comprised of automotive programming. "GearZ" will also continue syndication on MAVTV on Fridays and Sundays, elevating the viewership potential of this award winning DIY show to close to 100 million.

Yokohama to Move to Newly Constructed Distribution Facility

Yokohama's new 658,000-square-foot facility in Chino, California.

Yokohama Tire Corp. announced that it will move its Western Region Distribution center from the company's current facility in Fullerton, California, to its new 658,000-square-foot facility in Chino, California. The move is expected to be completed late this year. The new Western Region Distribution Center, located at 16388 Fern Avenue in the county of San Bernardino, is designed to hold tires at more than twice the capacity of the existing warehouse and bring together both full-time and contract labor. It will be used to distribute Yokohama’s products.

Ron Skyrme Joins Flaming River to Lead New Business Development

Flaming River Industries Inc. announced that hot rodding and racing veteran Ron Skyrme will join its team. Skyrme will lead new-business development for Flaming River and will call on customers and represent Flaming River at industry shows and events in areas primarily west of the Mississippi River. Skyrme has been involved in the automotive industry since the early 1970s and started out in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he opened up his own paint and striping shop at the age of 22.

He most recently finished a 24-year career with DuPont USA—working as a Technical Advisor in the Automotive Finishes Division. He was instrumental in helping to develop DuPont’s Hot Hues line of custom vehicle finishes.

Nitto Tire's 2nd Annual Auto Enthusiast Day August 2

Nitto Tire U.S.A. Inc. is bringing together enthusiasts from across all facets of the automotive spectrum for the 2nd Annual Auto Enthusiast Day, Saturday, August 2, in Anaheim, California. The company’s first Auto Enthusiast Day in December of 2013 was held to commemorate its surpassing the five-million fan mark on Facebook.

UNOH Offers Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Technology Supervision

The University of Northwestern Ohio announced that the school will offer a Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Technology Supervision. The course of study goes beyond the technical automotive education provided by the Associate Degree level, adding advanced technical and business management classes. The degree is designed as a 2+2 Bachelor’s program and can be completed in the College of Applied Technologies. Obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree will help students get a head start in their career with skills in marketing, customer service, safety regulations, and management. This allows students who have obtained an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology, Agricultural Equipment Technology, Diesel Technology, High Performance Motorsports Technology, or Alternate Fuels Technology to complete the requirements for a bachelor’s degree in just two additional years of study.

Prospective students fall into two categories: those who have already completed an Associate’s Degree, and those who are just entering college for the first time.  For those who have already received their Associate Degree in one of the above-mentioned fields, they can begin classes in the fall or spring quarter for 24 months.

Hot Rod Power Tour Participants Share Their Stories

I can say without hesitation that I am a stronger person in more than one way after this trip. I didn’t think it was possible to love my industry even more. Every town we passed through seemed to welcome the rolling car show with excitement.

Fellow Tour participants were so nice and truly seemed interested in each other’s cars, passions and places in the industry. It was remarkable to see the unity among enthusiasts. Strangers stopped to help each other out, just because. Family Events went above and beyond to help me find a valve-cover gasket so I would be able to continue to the next city without problems. The Hot Rod staff fed us a lavish dinner each night. I felt so well taken care of from the beginning of the tour all the way to the end. I can’t imagine a better group of people to travel across the United States with!

The highlight of my journey was the opportunity to speak to a group of young enthusiasts about the industry. The excitement and interest the teens showed when I brought my car into their shop assured me that there will continue to be young people entering the industry, and my hobby is not going to fade off into the distance.

My Bel Air only had 1,200 miles on it before the tour started, meaning it really got broken in on this journey. I am proud of myself, my husband and our shop for building the entire car in 18 weeks and putting it to the test. Now that I am home, it seems odd to be on the road in my classic all alone—parking lots and gas stations are boring again. I do feel that I came home with some serious bragging rights and I am already looking forward to 2015!

Describing the experience of a lifetime is difficult. Hot Rod magazine and SEMA’s YEN Power Tour brought together every aspect of automotive passion and beauty that I’ve held dear since childhood. It would have been unbelievable to go on the Hot Rod Power Tour, but by taking this adventure with nine other peers and sharing experiences together, it was something that I will never forget. I find myself still reminiscing with my fellow participants about the mishaps, interesting rods and even more interesting people. 

What the Power Tour meant to me was the chance to surround myself with like-minded gearheads, and partake in something that we all love. What the YEN Power Tour meant was something far more. I have never had an opportunity that left me so speechless. Meeting leaders in our industry, such as Doug Evans and Chris Kersting, to the people who are pushing our industry forward at the technical schools we visited, I don't know if there will ever be a more impactful seven days. 

As long as there are groups like SEMA and Hot Rod magazine keeping our hobbies and passions alive with events like this, we will keep showing up and supporting.

So, what was the Hot Rod Power Tour experience for me? A whirlwind seven days of friendships, breakdowns, fix-ups, beef jerky, burning rubber, horsepower and opportunity.

A few months ago, I had never even heard of the Hot Rod Power Tour. Now, I can’t imagine not attending every year from here on out. Not that I really need a reason to talk to strangers, but SEMA tasked us with talking to as many young people on the tour as we could to show that the young enthusiast sector is alive and thriving. It was fantastic! The hot-rod community is far larger than I initially estimated, and one of the friendliest, family-oriented, welcoming groups I’ve encountered. Rolling with the Tour through beautifully scenic country roads in the heart of America as townspeople line the roads with friendly smiles, waves and American flags evokes a feeling not easily described. Honestly, no matter what you drive, if you’ve modified it, it’s a hot rod. As they say, the journey is getting there. The friends you’ll make, challenges you’ll overcome and laughs you’ll share on the Tour can last a lifetime.

Living in Birmingham, Alabama, I have been fortunate to see the Hot Rod Power Tour pass through my town a couple of times in the past. During those years, I joined the tour for a couple of legs, so I thought I was informed about the Hot Rod Power Tour. However, my previous experience only scratched the surface of the true value of this event. For the full experience, one needs to run multiple legs of the Tour. The relationships forged in such a short time are amazing. While on the Tour, everyone is the same and equal and has a genuine bond. Seeing the gearhead bond grow through seven different cities in seven days is truly an amazing experience.

Rolling through the hills and town squares of several small-town American cities in the world’s largest traveling car show is an experience I will never forget. Seeing people in each town set out their lawn chairs on the side of the street and wave as the Tour drove by gave me a unique sense of what America truly is and what I hope it continues to be.

The hot-rod world is one that has withstood the test of time and been somewhat impervious to the problems plaguing the rest of the country. The Hot Rod Power Tour may consist of one of the largest groups of people who truly understand and experience what it is to be a proud American.

Explaining the Power Tour is like an astronaut trying to explain space; until you are there, you won't fully understand. The sense of community and passion can only be felt. This was my first Hot Rod Power Tour and I understand now why so many cars had multiple-year stickers on them.

I was a long hauler driving my ’35 Ford pickup with the YEN group and it was our mission to engage as much as possible with the people, places and vehicles participating. I dove in head first and was able to interview Richard Petty on day number one, setting the tone for a collection of memories that I will carry with me my whole life. If you are at all interested in the automotive world, whatever the era (there were plenty late-model cars with us), I suggest planning to take this tour. It will give you the best insight into what this industry is all about.

I was one of the lucky participants to go on the YEN Power Tour. This was a dream come true for my ’67 Mustang and me. For all of the enthusiasts out there who say, “This looks like fun, I have to do it one year,” stop saying it and do it! Even if it's only for one or two legs of the trip, it's simply amazing. It brings people from all walks of life together. No matter your age, race or gender, we were all treated like extended family. I was able to speak to kids and see the passion that I had at their age and was able to see that the future of our hobby and passion is still alive and strong in the next generation! I was also able to speak with people who have been in the industry a while. They were so kind and even shared some of their tips and experiences to help me in the future. This experience really opened my eyes and warmed my heart.

I had some issues with my car, and the group of people I was traveling with were eager to jump in and help. People I just met that day! Passing cars saw me with my hood up and stopped to help me get my car running again without thinking twice. It was amazing to see how a complete stranger will help you. Like I said before, it's like extended family here. You may have met some of these people for the first time but they are willing to do what they can to help you get from one stop to another, help you with advice for going after your dream and help you learn just a little more. I made some amazing friends on this trip and even more amazing memories.

As participants in the YEN Power Tour, we were all very lucky that SEMA sent us out to engage the youth in the automotive industry and see who was going to be the next generation of this industry. We had the opportunity to visit technical schools and speak to the students about how they can be a part of the industry and what they can do to continually learn and expand their own skills.

The trip itself was a lot of fun and definitely allowed us to see how the younger generation was getting engaged with the industry. We were also able to interview these young enthusiasts and learn what they would like to see in the industry as well as what got them into it.

Overall, the Tour was an amazing chance to engage the younger generation and find out how exactly youth are getting involved with the automotive industry.

I was taken by the variety of cars that were on the tour. Since I was riding with Dylan Sievers in a ’14 F-350 Super Duty, I initially thought we would be the odd man out in a sea of ’60s and ’70s musclecars. I ended up seeing a lot of pickups (some labeled “Plan B,” and those that were apparently Plan A).

When I got to the start in Charlotte on Friday night, I was happy to see all the parking lot camaraderie going on at the hotel. It was just like hanging out at your local cruise night, only the stories were more interesting, and I was 2,500 miles from home. Car guys (and gals) seem to be pretty much the same wherever you go, and despite the inherent spirit of competition, everybody was looking forward to hitting the road. The excitement was palpable the first night or two.  

Once we got a few days in, it was even cooler to run into the long haulers repeatedly, and talk through the days’ events—only on the Power Tour can so much happen to a single classic car or truck in 48 hours. Bent rod, broken fan, utterly destroyed radiator, you name it and the driver’s back on the road with plenty of time to check in at the next stop before the show closes down for the night.

That same energy carried the long haulers through to the end of the line in Wisconsin Dells. Through bouts of bad weather, long days and the occasional roadside brake job, it was a great week.

I feel extremely blessed to have been a part of an event that captures the true spirit and passion of our industry and hobby. One of the tasks for YEN members on Power Tour was to set out and investigate the commonly debated issue of the aftermarket parts business—are there enough younger enthusiasts getting involved with the industry? After travelling more than 1,700 miles through nine states and interviewing many enthusiasts, the answer was clear to me. This hobby is not aging out. While many of the traditional trends of the industry may be losing favor with the younger generation, there are just as many newer trends emerging. Probably one of the most impressive aspects of the Hot Rod Power Tour was the diversity in vehicles participating. Almost every market segment SEMA identifies was covered.

Another task assigned to the YEN crew was to visit a technical/trade school each day, and discuss the automotive aftermarket industry as a potential career path. It was exciting to see so many young people passionate about getting involved in the industry.
The friendships and networking that I have been able to build through the Power Tour have been invaluable to my career and personal life.
