NittoTire NMCA WEST Spring Nationals Race Wrap

The 6th Annual Nitto Tire NMCA Spring Nationals, March 31–April 2, 2017, kicked off the first of four battles in the VP Racing Fuels NMCA West Drag Racing Series, where racers fight for event wins and valuable points toward class championships. This season, the NMCA West added the Ultra Street Category to the championship roster, Limited Street was renamed Outlaw Street and the usual array of heads-up and index classes was again joined by the Hotchkis Auto X presented by Nitto Tire.

Edelbrock Super Quick: Jay Shelton and Greg Hicks made their first appearance of the NMCA West season. Hicks was off the tree first by six thousandths, but his 7.828 on a 7.82 dial in wasn’t enough to overcome Shelton’s 10.700 on a 10.70.

Calvert Racing Quick Street: Marvin Roles was .001 on the tree, which had Kelly Davis chasing him down the rest of the way down the track and eventually, but just barely, breaking out with a 10.058 run on a 10.06 dial in. Roles followed up his .001 light with a 10.148 on a 10.14 dial in for the win.

Classic Performance Products Nostalgia Street Car: In the final round, Merle Williams and his shoebox ’55 Chevy faced Mike Nordahl and his ’64 Chevy II. It was an easy win for Williams as Nordahl went -.007 red at the hit.

Gear Vendors True Street: Bill Fowler’s ’87 Mustang averaged 9.42 for the overall win. Dan Geis in his white Chevy II averaged a 9.71 for the runner-up spot, and Morris Coleman grabbed the 9-second award with a 9/79 average. The Senate Government Organization Committee approved legislation (H.B. 2402) to create a special procedure for a person in possession of an abandoned antique vehicle to apply for and receive title to the vehicle.

Legislation (H.B. 2402) to create a special procedure for a person in possession of an abandoned antique vehicle to apply for and receive title to the vehicle was approved by the Senate Government Organization Committee. Under the bill, the Division of Motor Vehicles would search for the owner of the vehicle and provide notice that an application has been filed for title to the vehicle. Antique motor vehicles are those vehicles manufactured more than 25 years before the current date. Having already been approved by the West Virginia House, the bill will next be considered by the full Senate.

Truck, SUV and Off-Roading Offerings

2016 SEMA Show New Products Showcase Entries

There’s good news for the truck, SUV and off-roading segments. Current SEMA research shows the aftermarket trend lines for all three categories rising. Certainly the renewed strength of these markets was demonstrated at the recent 2016 SEMA Show, where manufacturers introduced an impressive 567 fresh truck, SUV and off-road parts and accessories into the New Products Showcase. So what are the general trends?

Historically, accessory and appearance items have commanded large volume shares for the light-truck niche, but in recent years their sales have remained about par with handling products. Meanwhile, suspension products continue to be a staple of both truck and off-road enthusiasts alike, with handling products also a key driver in the off-road segment, whose sales growth climbed another 9% in 2015 alone. The light-truck niche (including SUVs, CUVs and vans), too, has seen steadfast growth since 2010—with accessory sales posting almost $2 billion over the past five years, and 10% growth in 2015. Consequently, you’ll find a broad range of innovative products representing all sorts of vehicle applications in the following pages, along with comments from several industry experts further highlighting market trends and selling tips.

View all of the truck, SUV and off-road new products from the 2016 SEMA Show New Product Showcase.
