OEM Summit

Panelists during the 2023 OEM Collision Repair Technology Summit at the SEMA Show.

During the 2024 SEMA Show, November 5-8, Las Vegas Convention Center, the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) will provide Showgoers with a slate of educational sessions highlighting developments in the automotive and collision-repair industries.

Scheduled for Thursday, November 7, the OEM Collision Repair Technology Summit will consist of three distinct sessions featuring companies and individuals with rich histories of producing sophisticated advancements in the automotive and collision-repair fields.

The event content will highlight architectural and technological developments in modern vehicles, with a focus on emerging trends that influence vehicle repairability and collision industry preparation.

The Value of OEM Repair Information

Summit programming begins on Thursday, November 7, at 12:30 p.m. PST, with Session I: The Value of OEM Repair Information. In this presentation and panel discussion, Dan Black, Kelly Logan and David Sosa of the Rivian research, engineering, service and collision team, will present on the process an automaker undertakes to research, develop, validate and publish new repair procedures for the industry. The case study will focus on the developmental life cycle of the front frame rail section concept. Through field data it was determined that the front frame rail could incur damage even in low-speed impact and that the market would benefit from a safe, and cost-effective alternative to a complete "skateboard" replacement.

How Telematics Technologies Are Evolving the Customer Experience

At 2:00 p.m. PST, OEM Summit Session II, How Telematics Technologies Are Evolving the Customer Experience, will feature Hilary Cain, senior vice president of policy at Alliance for Automotive Innovation, John Eck, head of product collision assistance at GM Enterprise Innovation, and Ryan McMahon, senior vice president of strategy and corporate development at Cambridge Mobile Telematics, who will dive into the real ways in which automotive and consumer telematics technologies are revolutionizing the relationship between the consumer and service industries.

Laser Welding in Automotive and Aerospace Manufacturing and Developing Technologies for Repair Solutions

A highlight of the program is, Session III: Laser Welding in Automotive and Aerospace Manufacturing and Developing Technologies for Repair Solutions, starting at 3:30 p.m. PST, Rex Alexandre, principal engineer at the Handheld Laser Institute, and former senior welding engineer for SpaceX will join Dean Brennan of IPG Photonics to demonstrate how laser welding has become popularized as an integral manufacturing technique in transportation industries. The two will explore with Jeff Poole of I-CAR, research and testing of the application in the collision repair industry, as well as challenges and considerations for the implementation of the photon joining process.

Every participant in the industry can benefit from better insight into how vehicles and materials are evolving, what that means in the repair process and what will be expected of those who are performing these repairs.

Interested Showgoers can register HERE for individual sessions or for a "Full Series Pass," which gives attendees the greatest flexibility and best value as an "all-access" pass to the full slate of SCRS educational offerings.

Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 Coupe Caught Thinly Disguised on the 'Ring

Mercedes-AMG CLE 63

Mercedes-Benz is replacing both the C-Class and E-Class coupe and convertible models in the United States with the new CLE model, spotted recently by SEMA News sources. The new model will slot between the C-Class and E-Class and be available as both a coupe and convertible, including sportier AMG variants.

The car was spied testing at the Nürburgring with minimal camo. In addition to the high-performance "63" variant, the new four-seater coupe is expected to offer a range of gas and diesel engines, including a smaller CLE 53 AMG version. Based on the thin camouflage, the release of the CLE coupe and convertible seems imminent, with an expected debut in spring 2025.

New Images of Hyundai IONIQ 6 Reveal Mid-Cycle Facelift, N High-Performance Version

Hyundai Ioniq 6 N

The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is set to receive a significant update, according to SEMA News sources, with a mid-cycle facelift aimed at boosting its competitiveness against its main rival, the Tesla Model 3. The update will introduce several new features, sources said, with a focus on enhancing the vehicle's powertrain.

One of the major updates involves replacing the current 77.4-kWh lithium-ion battery with a larger 84-kWh battery. This upgrade is expected to extend the IONIQ 6's range to approximately 435 miles. The vehicle will continue to offer both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options.

In addition to the facelift, Hyundai is also developing a high-performance version of the IONIQ 6, known as the IONIQ 6 N, following the success of the IONIQ 5 N. Spy shots taken near Germany's Nürburgring have captured our cleanest look at the IONIQ 6 N.

Speculation suggests that the IONIQ 6 N will build on Hyundai's RN22e prototype, incorporating many of the features found in the IONIQ 5 N. It's likely to include the same upgraded 84-kWh battery and high-powered electric motors, delivering 641 hp in Boost mode and 601 hp in regular driving modes. Driver-focused features from the IONIQ 5 N, such as the synthetic eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and N Active Sound+ (which mimics the sound of Hyundai's gas-powered N models), may also be included.

Production of the refreshed IONIQ 6 is reportedly set to begin in early 2025.
