The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its plan on Wednesday to meet President Trump's executive order on federal electric vehicle (EV) mandates, starting with reviews of several regulations passed by the previous administration. 

The EPA will reconsider the federal motor-vehicle emissions standards that require automakers and truck manufacturers to increase zero-emissions vehicle sales (known as the Model-Year 2027 and Later Light-Duty and Medium-Duty Vehicles regulation and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards for Heavy-Duty Vehicles). Today, only EVs and five plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) meet these standards. 

The EPA will reconsider its March 2024 vehicle emissions regulation for model-years '27-'32, which effectively requires two out of three new vehicles sold to be EVs by 2032. The EPA will also reevaluate the 2022 Heavy-Duty Nitrous Oxide (NOx) rule, which was a centerpiece of the Biden Administration's Clean Truck Plan. 

California's EV mandate and internal combustion engine (ICE) ban—known as ACCII and currently impacting 11 other states—remains in place and is not affected by these EPA actions. Congress has until mid-April to overturn the federal waiver that enables the California mandates.

SEMA reacts: "SEMA thanks EPA Administrator Zeldin and President Trump for this bold action. SEMA has long advocated that government mandates, including those designed to support the sale of EVs and eliminate the sale of ICE vehicles, are the wrong approach to reducing motor vehicle emissions. The federal and state governments should take an 'all of the above' approach to vehicle technology, incentivize innovation, and allow the market to determine the best ways to reach improved emissions goals." 

Critical to note: The EPA action only impacts the EV mandates signed in 2023 and 2024. The March 10 EPA announcement is not a further rollback of emissions standards in place before the EV mandates implemented by the Biden Administration. None of President Trump's executive orders reverses existing laws that prohibit the use of defeat devices. A change to this policy would require separate legislative action by Congress and significant changes to the Federal Clean Air Act.

Of the several honors and recognitions that SEMA bestows each year, the SEMA Person of the Year Award is among the most prestigious. Determined by a special committee and presented at the annual SEMA Show's Industry Banquet, the award recognizes exceptional volunteerism and service to the association and the industry. Accordingly, on Thursday night, November 7, 2024, before a gathering of 1,400 SEMA Show banquet attendees, Trim Illusion President Colby McLaughlin was named the award's most recent recipient.

While the announcement took him completely off guard, those familiar with his work were not surprised. McLaughlin has distinguished himself as an enthusiastic volunteer on the SEMA Professional Restylers Organization (PRO) Select Committee for many years, and now chairs the council, guiding it in creating valuable benefits that enhance the business practices and procedures of automotive restylers nationwide. In addition to his council endeavors, McLaughlin also actively supports automotive education programs, has mentored aspiring designers and engineers, and generously contributes to charitable initiatives that benefit automotive enthusiasts and their families. For these and other achievements, McLaughlin joins a select group of association honorees.

"SEMA is proud to recognize Colby for his contributions to the restyling industry and the entire aftermarket," said SEMA President and CEO Mike Spagnola. "His efforts have yielded solutions to many problems that SEMA members and automotive enthusiasts around the world face. We commend him for his passion, dedication to excellence and overall positive industry influence."

In the wake of the awards ceremony, SEMA magazine caught up with McLaughlin for his reflections on being named SEMA Person of the Year, his career and volunteer milestones and why he remains a steadfast industry advocate. What follows has been edited for clarity and conciseness.

SEMA Magazine: You seemed rather surprised at the SEMA Show's Industry Banquet when you were named SEMA Person of the Year. How did it feel?

Colby McLaughlin: Yeah, it was funny when [emcee] Jarod DeAnda was introducing the winner as a "philanthropist and innovator…" I've never been called those before, so I was just shoving buttered rolls in my face, and my wife nudged me. I don't know if she got tipped off or not, but it was a surprise. To be recognized by the people I respect a lot in this industry was an amazing feeling, for sure.

SM: That's great. And as you know, the award honors service to SEMA and the industry. But before we get into that, let's go into some background about who you are and what you do.

CM: I started in automotive; really, it's been my only career...

As the number of ADAS-equipped vehicles continues to grow, mastering the proper calibration of these systems is becoming increasingly vital.

'26 Mazda CX-5 to Get Hybrid Power

A recent batch of images captured by SEMA News sources have revealed the third generation of Mazda's best-selling vehicle, the CX-5.

Spotted testing near Mazda's European headquarters in Germany, the CX-5 retains a similar appearance to its predecessor, but features a longer body and a rear design reminiscent of the CX-90 and Mazda 3 hatchback. Additionally, the grille appears narrower than that of the current model, drawing inspiration from the CX-50.

While it may look similar, the next-generation CX-5 is expected to be a completely new vehicle built on the Small Platform, which is derived from the current Mazda 3, CX-30 and CX-50. Mazda confirmed last May that this model will feature a full-hybrid system developed in-house, rather than the Toyota RAV4-derived hybrid system used in the CX-50 and will retain the CX-5 name instead of adopting a new designation like CX-40.

According to insiders, the new CX-5 is anticipated to launch in Europe between September and November 2025, offering mild-hybrid, hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. The introduction of a full-hybrid powertrain in the CX-5 will finally provide Mazda with a competitor to the best-selling Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, which saw most of its sales in 2024 come from electrified models, now offered exclusively as hybrids.

Dacia Sandero Spotted With Design Updates

Dacia, the Romanian car manufacturer owned by Renault, is working on a major update for its Sandero hatchback, according to new images.

The first spy shots of the prototype reveal a facelift for the generation of the city car first launched in 2020.

Photographed inside a testing facility in Germany with Renault's trademark camouflage, the images show design changes to the front and rear. The Sandero, after adopting Dacia's new corporate design in 2022, is now adapting to the design philosophy that the brand is applying to all new models. According to sources, both light clusters will be updated with LED technology taking center stage in the headlights.

The front bumper is covered, hinting that it will be revised. Likewise, the grille will get a lot of attention and some minor changes. Dacia will also take the opportunity to expand and improve the technological equipment of what is one of its best-selling models.

New features are anticipated under the hood, too, with the new generation of bi-fuel engines debuted on the Dacia Bigster expected to be available on the Sandero range.

The facelifted model will be equipped with mild hybrid technology (MHEV) in order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Rumors have suggested that all versions of the new Sandero will only be available as hybrids, as is already the case with the Dacia Duster and the aforementioned Bigster.

The new Sandero will have its public unveiling sometime later this year. The commercial launch is expected to take place in the second half of 2025.

Tire Group International Hosts Open House at New Portland Distribution Center

Tire Group International (TGI) recently welcomed more than 100 customers to its newly expanded distribution center in Portland, Oregon.

The event marked the official opening of the 95,000 sq.-ft. facility following TGI's acquisition of Portland-based Avaun Tire. The company integrated Avaun Tire's operations into the new location, reaffirming its commitment to growth and service in the region, the company said.

The new distribution center will serve key regions and is part of TGI's ongoing efforts to expand its reach. TGI offers a portfolio of more than 30 tire brands covering all major industry segments. The facility will stock a wide range of products, including brands like Cosmo Tires, Astro Tires, Duramas Tires, Yokohama, Kumho, GT Radial, Mickey Thompson, Kenda and others.

RNR Tire Express Promotes Susan Vice to VP of Finance

RNR Tire Express, the tire and wheel retail franchise, has promoted Susan Vice to vice president of finance.

Vice joined RNR Tire Express in October 2020 as financial controller. Before joining RN, she held leadership positions with several national restaurant companies, including Wendy's, Outback Steakhouse and Chili's.

In her new role, Vice will oversee RNR's accounting department, focusing on ensuring the long-term financial success of both the brand and its franchisees. She will lead a team of 13 professionals, working together to streamline processes and implement financial software to ensure optimal performance.

The SEMA Truck & Off-Road Alliance (TORA) named Chad Cole, director of automotive sales at Blue Ox, as the council's newest spotlight member. Get to know Cole in his interview with SEMA News below.  

SEMA News: What inspired you to pursue a career in the truck and off-road industry?   

Chad Cole: I grew up in the automotive industry. My dad had a '79 Bronco, and I remember going to car shows thinking it was the coolest vehicle of all time. Fast forward to my 16th birthday; I had a '91 Bronco, fully lifted with rims, tires, fender flares--you name it! That's what I love about the industry--seeing people express their creativity through their vehicles.

SN: Why did you decide to volunteer for TORA?  

CC: I joined to network and connect with members across the industry while being part of a mission that helps shape its future

SN: What advice do you have for someone pursuing a career in the automotive aftermarket?   

CC: Good question. I have a few, but the one that comes to mind the most is: "You make your own luck."

SN: What is your dream truck or off-road vehicle?    

CC: I'm a big fan of EarthRoamers! I drive a '20 Tundra; the lift and tires aren't as big as my '91 Bronco, but it still has "the look."
