As of November 1, 2012, manufacturers of passenger and light commercial vehicle tires sold in Europe are required to provide information on how their tires rate on three measures: fuel efficiency, noise and wet grip. The tire label will use a classification from the best (green category "A") to the worst performance (red category "G” for car and “F” for truck), which is to be displayed on either a sticker affixed to the tire or on a label accompanying the tire when it is delivered at point of sale and visible to the end-user.

This initiative results from a proposal by the EU Commission to increase the safety and environmental and economic efficiency of road transport by promoting fuel-efficient and safe tires with low noise levels. In addition, the information must be available in technical promotional literature (leaflets, brochures, etc.), including on the manufacturer’s website. Tires produced before July 1, vintage tires and all the tires excluded from the regulation can still be freely sold and marketed without any of the labeling and information requirements.

The following tires are exempt from these regulations: retreaded tires (for the time being, but similar regulations are being considered for this niche), professional off-road tires, racing tires, studded tires, vintages tires (defined as those to be fitted on vehicles registered for the first time before October 1, 1990) and low-speed tires—those with a speed rating of less than 80 km.

For more information on the EU Tire Labeling Regulation 1222/2009, contact Linda Spencer at lindas@sema.org or download the UK Tire Federation brochure.

Global Rallycross Championship (GRC) will bring the spectacle of rallycross racing to the 2012 SEMA Show.

“We have been working hard with the team at SEMA and are thrilled that we will be racing at this year’s event,” said Brian Gale, GRC’s co-founder and president. “It will be a great opportunity to showcase the incredible technology of rallycross cars in front of this amazing gathering of aftermarket suppliers from around the world. We want to open their eyes to the excitement of rallycross and show the world how cool these production-based B and C segment cars are.”

The race will take place on the opening night of the SEMA Show, Tuesday, October 30, on a course specially constructed on Las Vegas Convention Center grounds, directly across from the convention hall.

“Motorsports inspires and motivates millions of consumers around the world,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “We're excited that GRC is coming to Las Vegas during the SEMA Show week, as it will give entrepreneurs from our industry a first-hand look at the opportunities this burgeoning sport represents and the new consumer demographic it attracts.”

Global Rallycross will also be featured in SEMA’s Racing and Performance Forum, October 30, at 1:00 p.m. The Forum will be moderated by John Waraniak, SEMA vice president of vehicle technology, and include Jamie Allison, director of Ford Racing; Jim Campbell, vice president of General Motors Performance Vehicles and Motorsports; and Ralph Gilles, president and CEO of Street and Racing Technology Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group.

“We want to thank the leadership at SEMA for working with us to add this event to our 2012 calendar; it is an amazing opportunity that we couldn’t pass up and see it as being the perfect follow-up to our event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway September 29, where the $25,000 Discount Tire Cup will be decided,” added Gale.

Several of the sport’s biggest names are in contention, including Travis Pastrana, winner of the last round at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Ken Block of WRC and Gymkhana 5 fame, "Top Gear" USA’s Tanner Foust and drifting champion Samuel Hubinette.

The event will be televised on the ESPN networks.
