SEMA News—March 2011

It isn’t often you can capture this many iconic figures in one candid photograph, but that’s exactly what Petersen Publishing photographer Pat Brollier managed to do on a June day in 1974.

At left is actor Martin Sheen, next to him is Pete Chapouris, and behind them is Chapouris’ trend-setting ’34 Ford three-window coupe. The trio was captured during the filming of The California Kid, an ABC television movie of the week starring Sheen and Vic Morrow. Brollier and Hot Rod magazine staffer Gray Baskerville were on the set to catch some of the action for a story to appear in the magazine’s October issue.

It’s only fitting that Baskerville was the one doing the story. He had, a year or so earlier, caught wind of Chapouris’ hot rod under construction and turned the buildup into a series of articles for Rod & Custom magazine. At the same time, Baskerville chronicled another ’34 coupe project, this one by Jim “Jake” Jacobs. Both cars were remarkable for their time in that they weren’t of their time—they were traditional hot rods, throw-backs to the top-chopping, louver-punching trends of the ’50s when doing such a thing wasn’t yet cool.

Baskerville knew cool, though, and his articles culminated in a special “Chopped Top Issue” of Rod & Custom in November 1973, with the two hammered coupes gracing the cover. Countless rodders were influenced by this issue, and it also caught the eye of Howie Horowitz, producer of the “Batman” TV series, who was looking for a special car to feature in his upcoming TV movie. He wanted Chapouris’ flamed Ford, and that’s how this trio wound up on Aqua Dulce Road in the Soledad Canyon area north of Los Angeles on this June day.

Sheen would go on to make a name for himself as an actor; Chapouris would do the same in the rodding world. After Baskerville introduced them, Chapouris and Jacobs formed Pete & Jake’s, originally a hot-rod repair business that grew into a manufacturer of rodding parts. The pair sold their business in 1987, and Chapouris worked for SEMA for a few years before returning to the rod-building business. In 1995, he opened the Pete Chapouris Group, also known as PC3g, which was later reborn as the new SO-CAL Speed Shop (with the blessings and help from original founder Alex Xydias).

Along the way Chapouris has built, or had a hand in building, a number of notable rods, including the Eliminator coupe and two “HogZZilla” custom motorcycles for ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons. He was also involved in the restoration of several historic hot rods for Bruce Meyer, including the Doane Spencer roadster, Pierson Brothers coupe and Xydias’ original SO-CAL Speed Shop belly tank lakester.

The Kid lives, too. It moved to Missouri when Jerry Slover bought the Pete & Jake’s rod parts business from Chapouris
and Jacobs.

SEMA-member RTM Productions welcomed Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) for a behind-the-scenes tour and legislative briefing at its headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee. Established in 1989, RTM produces automotive, outdoor and entertainment programming for television, including the acclaimed PowerBlockTV series. In 2006, RTM consolidated its three locations and moved into a state-of-the-art, 50,000-sq.-ft. facility. The production technical center features six full production studios and five editing suites along with the company’s business offices.

Rep. Blackburn was first elected to represent Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District in 2002 and is now serving her fifth term in Congress. She owns a small-business marketing company and, before coming to Washington, was active in state and local politics. She served in the Tennessee State Senate from 1998–2002, where she led a grassroots campaign to defeat a proposed state income tax.

Rep. Blackburn has been a strong advocate for small businesses in Congress, serving on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. She is the Republican Deputy Whip, an important position for coordinating party positions and votes in the House. Rep. Blackburn is also a member of the Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus.

The RTM tour featured visits to the PowerblockTV studios and production facilities, including the stage sets for RTM shows “Xtreme 4x4,” “Trucks!,” “HorsePower” and “MuscleCar.” Following the tour, Blackburn led a discussion regarding critical issues in Washington, including how to make health care more affordable for small-business owners and increasing access to credit to spur economic growth.

“Small businesses are the engines of our economy, and they will drive our recovery,” Rep. Blackburn said. “As we get to work in Washington creating the environment for jobs growth, it is vital that I stay in touch with the job creators in Tennessee. This visit gave me a wonderful perspective on RTM’s challenges as well as its incredible potential.”

Cozzie congratulated Rep. Blackburn on her leadership in the new Congress and wished her the best of luck for a productive year.

“We appreciate Representative Blackburn’s hands-on approach to constituent service here in her district, especially her fight against increased health care premiums for business owners,” Cozzie said. “Having the opportunity to showcase RTM’s production facilities and discuss local issues with our lawmakers through SEMA’s Congressional District Site Visit Program is invaluable.”

The Congressional District Site Visit Program is overseen by SEMA’s government affairs office in Washington, D.C. The program allows SEMA members to raise the visibility of the industry on Capitol Hill by connecting lawmakers with their constituents in their home districts. The RTM event was Blackburn’s second program visit. In 2003, she toured the Hypertech Inc. headquarters and met with local constituents.

Any company interested in hosting an event at its facilities with its federal elected officials may contact Congressional Affairs Manager Dan Sadowski via e-mail or by calling 202/783-6007 x19.
