SEMA News—June 2011

Nostalgia Meets Technology…and Likes It

The hot-rod market—the granddaddy of the automotive specialty-equipment industry—has seen some significant changes over the last few years based on both demographic and economic factors. The desire for modern amenities and advanced technology has increased with the aging of the Baby Boom generation. Styles and equipment have evolved to match those desires. From air suspension to classic gauges fitted with modern movements, and from keyless ignition to drive-by-wire throttle controls, the hot-rod world is keeping pace with developments in the rest of the automotive universe.

The accompanying compilation of hot rod products that debuted at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas provides a fair overview of where the market is headed, and we’ve supplemented it with comments about current trends from executives who manage industry-leading companies. The overwhelming consensus is that musclecars and sophisticated equipment in every system are now in demand.

Our customers have become much more sophisticated over the years, and they are much more demanding. A basic Chevy Malibu off the showroom floor today has four-wheel disc brakes, a climate control system that works really well and very good sound deadening. The performance of your hot rod should at least surpass the performance of your everyday street car. In both street rods and musclecars, people want the latest technology so that they can drive and enjoy their hot rods rather than just throwing them on a trailer and taking them to a show. The numbers-matching musclecars aren’t bringing the same money as the cars with good brakes, a good suspension system and updated climate controls. People want a car that looks like a ’60s or ’70s car but handles and drives like a newer vehicle. The greatest opportunities lie now in increasing the number of complete packages you have—all-inclusive kits so that the customer is not sourcing one part here and another part there. Whether it’s brakes, air-conditioning or gauges, if you can provide a complete kit that is going to give the customer everything he needs, he’s going to be much more satisfied.

It’s significant that Ford has released the Boss 302 Mustang and Chevy has announced the ZL1 Camaro in the face of the media-hyped doomsday over the economy and environment. From what we hear, Camaro will be launching as many niche special models as Mustang has (such as Bullitt, California Special, GT500, Boss 302 and so on).

The retro trend shows no sign of slowing down and is continuing to broaden into the designs of rods and customs.

Modern engine swaps continue to gain mainstream acceptance, especially those using GM LS engines and, to a lesser extent, Mopar Hemis.

The introduction of the new 5.0L Coyote Ford engine will create an increase in the interest of modern Ford swaps into older cars, and turbocharging continues to grow as a mainstream method of supercharging.

The situations in the Middle East and Japan are going to challenge our economy and oil supply. SEMA and its members should choose an alternative-power solution that is performance friendly and find ways to support it within the government while also providing speed-friendly answers for enthusiasts. It strikes me that E85 is the best option.

SEMA News—June 2011

An Introduction to Health Care Exchanges

By Dan Sadowski

One of the fundamental components of last year’s health care law is the creation of health care “exchanges.” While the law itself remains mired in controversy and threats of repeal, the state-based programs, if and when fully implemented, should make it easier for small-business owners and individuals to compare and select health care coverage. Exchanges are intended to create a competitive marketplace and increase access to affordable health care insurance.

The exchanges are a variation on the Small Business Health Plan (SBHP) option endorsed by SEMA members over the past decade. They are also different. A core concept behind SBHPs was to create national competition by allowing companies to purchase insurance across state borders. That may eventually happen with the exchanges, but they will first focus on creating and managing competition within state borders.

It may take a few years before the exchanges are in full operation, but the following should help SEMA members understand what is on the horizon.

Q: What is a health care exchange program?

A: An exchange is a marketplace where small-business owners (100 or fewer employees) and individuals can purchase health insurance plans in their state based on price and quality. The intent is to create a transparent and standardized method for comparing policies and understanding benefits and coverage. Plans will be divided into four types based on the level of benefits: bronze, silver, gold and platinum.

Q: How does an exchange work?

A: Each state will develop a web-based portal to buy health insurance. Small businesses and individuals can use the marketplace website to comparison-shop different insurance options. Most states are still developing the exact structure of their exchanges, but they will work within uniform federal standards.

Q: Will all states have exchanges?

A: Under the health care law, states are given the option to establish their own exchanges, form regional or multi-state exchanges (smaller-population states may opt for regional programs) or not participate. Should a state fail to establish an exchange by January 1, 2014, the federal government will establish the exchange. The federal government can begin that process if it determines by January 1, 2013, that a state has not made a sufficient effort to create an exchange.

Q: Who will be allowed to purchase insurance from exchanges?

A: Initially, exchanges will be available to employers with 100 or fewer workers and individuals purchasing their coverage (without access to employer coverage). In 2017, states will have the option of allowing larger companies to participate. States have the option of combining the individual/small group markets within one exchange or creating two separate exchanges. The small group exchanges are referred to as Small Business Health Options Program.

Q: What will health care coverage offered in the exchange include?

A: The federal government will establish an “essential benefit package” that defines minimum benefits to be covered within the four different exchange plan levels. The federal government is still developing those standards, which are scheduled to be released by the end of 2011. Once the standards are issued, states will begin to design their exchanges in accordance with federal guidelines. Not every state program will be the same, and many states are currently considering how their individual programs will be governed and regulated.

Q: How much will coverage included in exchanges cost?

A: Health care premiums will be different depending on the amount of coverage included per plan and location. Insurers are prohibited from raising premiums based on gender or health condition. In addition, annual health care deductible payments made before insurance payments take effect will be limited at $5,950 for individual plans and $11,900 for family plans.

Q: Can employers still work with insurance agents and brokers to obtain coverage for their employees?

A: Yes. Most states plan to include an option for businesses and individuals to enroll in an exchange-based coverage plan through a certified, licensed independent agent or broker. If you are currently working with an agent or broker, that person will be able to assist in determining which plans within the exchange provide the most reasonable coverage and assist in understanding the relationship between state and federal mandates in the new health care law. However, per federal law, insurers will not be required to sell plans within the exchange.

Q: How will exchanges help me as a small-business owner?

A: According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), exchanges should increase competition in an open market of private insurance plans by pooling them together. Therefore, small-business owners can comparison shop and increase their health insurance purchasing ability in the marketplace. The exchanges will also provide small-business owners with tools to compare benefits, price and quality of coverage.

Q: Is there already a website that will help me find health insurance?

A: Yes. HHS has created an informational website (www.healthcare.gov) that outlines how the health care law is being implemented. It includes helpful information on insurance options, tax credits and comparisons between different coverage types. The website is being constantly updated. The website will eventually link to the exchanges in order to create a one-stop shop for finding health
care insurance.

As states continue to develop their exchange programs, SEMA’s government affairs office will keep members informed to make the best choices possible for their businesses. For more information, please contact Dan Sadowski, congressional affairs manager.

2011 Report Examines Truck Ownership and Accessory Purchases

The “2011 Pickup Truck Report” is now available as a free download to SEMA members and to nonmembers for only $99.95 at www.sema.org/2011pickupreport. It delves even further into the marketplace than the previous report published in 2008.

The U.S. light-truck market is incredibly broad. Used for general transportation, commercial applications and recreation, light trucks comprise the single largest category for businesses in the automotive specialty-equipment industry. Indeed, trucks and the accessories built for them are so popular that they have laid claim to their own exhibit hall at the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas. While the light-truck market encompasses vans, crossovers, SUVs and some specially constructed vehicles, pickups make up the lion’s share of the market for SEMA members. The nation’s first and second top-selling vehicles are—and have been for years—the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado pickup lines.

SEMA periodically canvasses truck owners to stay abreast of the market, and the association has just released a new survey—“2011 SEMA Pickup Truck Report”—to augment its research findings about the category. The new analysis is now available as a free download to SEMA members and to nonmembers for only $99.95. It supersedes a similar report that was released in 2008 but delves even further into the marketplace.

The 2008 version covered only late-model offerings, focusing on ’07 and ’08 midsize and fullsize pickups. The new report covers a decade’s worth of vehicles, ranging from the ’01 to the ’11 model years. It includes information about 15 individual models as well as sales and popularity data on more than three dozen types of accessories.

The study was conducted by Hedges & Company, the well-known specialty-equipment marketing firm that also produces the monthly SEMA Financial Benchmarking reports and specializes in market research, database marketing and managed e-mail marketing. Hedges & Company surveyed more than 2,000 midsize and fullsize truck owners from across the United States.

“The pickup data and the information about the products that are being purchased are relevant to a very broad cross-section of the SEMA membership,” said Julie Hedges, president of Hedges & Company. “The truck market continues to be the largest segment serviced by SEMA-member distributors, manufacturers and retailers, and we wanted to ensure that the report would be pertinent to all members. This new report is a much more robust look at the market.”

Top Ten Accessories Installed/Planned to Install:
’01–’11 Fullsize Pickup Owners

Custom Front Grille 19.60
Air Cleaner/Intake 18.20
Performance Tires 17.90%
Performance Exhaust 14.70%
Custom Floor Mats 10.60%
Custom Wheels 9.80%
Toolbox 9.70%
Navigation Systems 9.70%
Heavy Duty Trailer Hitch 9.60%
Trailer Brake Controller 9.40%

Table A: The top 10 must-have accessories for fullsize pickups as selected by the respondents in the “2011 SEMA Pickup Truck Report” included custom front grilles, air cleaners and performance tires.

The light-truck industry was seriously affected by the economic recession, but the report indicates that pickup sales have begun to rebound. Sales for the third quarter of 2010 were nearly 14% ahead of those in the same period for the previous year, and the pool of respondents remained seemingly aggressive in their purchase decisions. In fact, the report says, owners of ’01–’11 fullsize pickups spend an average of $875 on accessories, with the respondents planning to spend $768 on accessories in the next 12 months. Owners of midsize trucks averaged $486 on accessories, with respondents planning for an additional $536 in the next 12 months.

The preliminary sections of the report contain general information about the overall pickup category, including sales data and engine offerings for the models included in the study. The publication then segregates the two pickup classes, with data collected from fullsize truck owners featured first.

In order to compile the material about accessories, each group was asked a series of questions based on their purchasing experiences and future plans as well as ranking lists of accessories as “must have,” “nice to have” or “not necessary.” Hedges & Company encapsulated the data into appropriate sections accompanied by easy-to-read tables, such as the two reproduced here.

Custom front grilles (see Table A) topped the list of accessories that fullsize pickup owners have installed or planned to install in the next 12 months. Items such as air intakes, performance tires and performance exhaust followed. In the midsize segment, performance tires were number one (see Table B), followed by air intakes, navigation systems and custom front grilles. Additional tables in each section detail the top accessories by pickup make.

The report also examines the sources of information and the types of outlets pickup owners use in researching and shopping for accessories.

“One of the significant findings was the impact of the Internet when people are looking for information,” Hedges said. “Websites were clearly the leading source of information for both midsize and fullsize pickup respondents, but there was nearly an equal split between the Internet and retail stores when it came time to buy.”

Trucks and accessories are so popular that they have laid claim to their own exhibit hall at the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas, and SEMA just released a new “2011 SEMA Pickup Truck Report” to augment its research findings about the category.

The new “2011 Pickup Truck Report” covers a decade’s worth of vehicles ranging from ’01 to ’11, including 15 individual models as well as more than three dozen of the industry’s most popular accessories.

Within the section on purchase research and buying decisions, the report considers the reasons why owners chose specific outlets for specific accessories. For instance, the primary motives among fullsize pickup owners ranged from price for both custom wheels and navigation systems to in-stock availability for air intakes. Price was the prime mover for midsize truck respondents for three of the top accessory categories, including navigation systems, exhaust and custom wheels.

“Another interesting finding was the respondents’ opinions on warranties,” Hedges said. “Warranty concerns were not very high, with only about a quarter of the people expressing any fear. The rest were aware of potential impacts but were not really apprehensive about warranty issues. While 25% of the market is not insignificant, it is lower than many
would expect.”

Top 10 Accessories Installed/Planned to Install: ’01–’11 Midsize Pickup Owners

Performance Tires 16.70% Air Cleaner/Intake 15.30%
Navigation Systems 10.20%
Custom Front Grille 8.80%
Heavy-Duty Trailer Hitch 8.80% Performance Exhaust 8.40%
Side Window Drip Guard 8.40%
Custom Wheels 7.40%
Tool Box 7.40%
Bed Mat 7.00%

Table B: The top 10 accessories selected by midsize pickup owners included performance tires, air intakes and navigation systems.

The pickup report also showed that accessory purchases from automobile dealerships followed many of the same trends that were reported in the recently released “Influence of Accessories on New-Vehicle Sales” (see “Survey Says!,” SEMA News March 2010, and “Accessories Influence New-Car Sales,” SEMA News April 2010). New-pickup buyers who added accessories at the dealership included those purchases in their vehicle-financing package 75% of the time for fullsize vehicles and 68% for midsize. However, the survey respondents also stated that the majority of their accessories were not installed at dealerships, and the report examines the influence that dealership display vehicles had on such purchases.

The full report contains a wealth of information about the marketplace. Obviously, we can touch on only the highlights of the 50-page publication in this preview, but we encourage every business involved in the light-truck accessory industry to download the survey and review its contents. In addition, SEMA Senior Manager of Market Research Gavin Knapp will present a webinar based on the report Thursday, May 26, at 10:00 a.m. PDT/1:00 p.m. EDT. The presentation will then be added to the association’s webinar archive for subsequent download.

Sponsored by SEMA’s Truck and Off-Road Alliance (TORA) council, the webinar will provide a complete overview of the updated research study, including current and upcoming pickup trends that are pertinent to manufacturers, distributors, jobbers, retailers and installers. The presentation will also cover the top pickup accessories; how pickup owners shop for accessories; the top accessories they want for their next trucks; and pickup sales trends.

Complete details about the live webinar or downloads from the archives are available at www.SEMA.org/webinars. SEMA webinars are free to SEMA members and only $29 for nonmembers.
