NHTSA Proposes Electronic Recall Notifications

By SEMA Washington, D.C., Staff

In order to increase the repair rates for vehicle and equipment recalls, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is proposing that manufacturers notify customers electronically in addition to via first-class mail. The manufacturer would have flexibility in selecting what they would consider to be the most effective electronic method(s). Options would include e-mails, text messages, phone calls, radio and TV messages or other social media campaigns. A requirement for electronic communications was included in the highway bill enacted into law last December.
