Hemmings Reports: SEMA Continues Push for Pro-Racing Campaign

By SEMA Washington, D.C., Staff

Leading car news source Hemmings recently highlighted the ongoing efforts by SEMA, racers and business owners to urge the U.S. Congress to protect racing and the businesses that support motorsports by passing the RPM Act.

While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has formally withdrawn its proposed racing regulation, the agency continues to assert authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate street vehicles modified exclusively for the track and the businesses that make those products, despite Congressional intent.

The bipartisan bill RPM Act, which is now pending before Congress, would make it clear now and in the future that modification of street vehicles for competition is legal and beyond the reach of EPA regulations. The RPM Act addresses any doubts regarding regulation of racecars and gives the public and racecar industry much-needed certainty regarding how the Clean Air Act is applied.

Per Hemmings: Steve McDonald, SEMA vice president of government affairs, said SEMA still believes the RPM Act is necessary because “if you read the rationale behind removing that language, you’ll notice that the EPA doesn’t change their position. They still claim authority under the Clean Air Act for regulating parts destined for competition vehicles.”

As Congress enters the final months of the year, SEMA needs your help to encourage lawmakers to move forward on the bill.
