NHTSA May Expand Bumper Standard to Light Trucks

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is seeking public comment on whether to apply the bumper standard to light trucks, vans and SUVs (collectively referred to as LTVs). The standard has only applied to passenger cars since it was implemented in 1972.

The agency has been petitioned on several occasions to expand the standard, most recently by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). While denying previous petitions, NHTSA is revisiting the issue given the larger number of LTVs in the car fleet. Comments are due August 14, 2009.
