For Mike Lusso of The Coats Company, the aftermarket is more than an industry; it’s an opportunity to innovate, build relationships and leave a lasting mark.
As Sustaining Engineer Manager, Lusso focuses on testing current and future products while working on advanced manufacturing of prototype parts. His role puts him at the intersection of engineering, product development and the evolving needs of the aftermarket.
Looking ahead, Lusso’s biggest concern for the industry is the combination of legislation and a lack of consumer awareness about the technology in today’s vehicles. As vehicles become increasingly sophisticated, he believes it is critical for both the industry and consumers to understand how those technologies impact the aftermarket.
One of Lusso’s proudest career accomplishments has been serving as chair of the Wheel & Tire Council (WTC) and helping to expand it into the Wheel, Tire, Suspension & Brake Council (WTSBC). That experience also introduced him to one of the mentors who has had the greatest impact on his career: Todd Steen. Lusso credits Steen with being a great leader who helped him develop as a chair, connect people and ultimately help grow WTC into WTSBC.
The advice Lusso carries with him is simple but powerful: “Make your mark. Don’t just sit back, be a catalyst.” It’s a philosophy that reflects his approach to both his career and the industry.
In 2026, Lusso’s biggest career goal is to successfully launch a new product that is well received by the industry, specifically, a new balancer. For someone focused on bringing tomorrow’s products to market, seeing a new innovation successfully make its way into the hands of customers is a meaningful milestone.
Outside of work, Lusso drives a 2024 Toyota Tundra Limited, although his dream vehicle would be a 2025 Jeep Wrangler 392.
When it comes to the event he looks forward to most each year, it’s the SEMA Show. With its unmatched participation and engagement, Lusso says, “It’s where everyone is.”
From engineering the next generation of products to helping build the organizations and relationships that strengthen the aftermarket, Lusso continues to embody what it means to be an active catalyst for the industry.
