The Future Leaders Network (FLN) Vanguard Award recognizes an individual, business, organization or sanctioning body that has made a meaningful impact on the career development of young executives in the automotive aftermarket. The award honors those who demonstrate exceptional service, integrity and business ethics while helping cultivate the next generation of industry leaders through mentorship, vision and contributions to the industry.
In 2025, FLN recognized Colby McLaughlin of Trim Illusion Holdings for his commitment to mentoring and developing emerging professionals. For McLaughlin, the recognition was unexpected, but deeply meaningful.
“I have been in the automotive industry my whole life and have been fortunate to have many mentors along the way,” McLaughlin said. “It is our obligation to help develop those earlier in their journey.”
That philosophy has shaped McLaughlin’s approach to mentorship throughout his career. He believes sharing both successes and mistakes can help young professionals navigate the challenges of business and leadership while preparing them for greater responsibility.
McLaughlin places particular emphasis on understanding the people he mentors. He wants to know their goals and, just as importantly, what motivates them. His leadership philosophy is rooted in servant leadership and creating opportunities for others to grow rather than allowing organizational barriers to limit their potential.
“Train people well enough so they can leave. Treat them well enough so they don’t want to,” he said, referencing a quote from Richard Branson that reflects his approach.
McLaughlin also sees organizations like FLN as critical to the aftermarket's future. Programs such as the Professional Development Program help young professionals strengthen communication and leadership skills while building valuable industry relationships.
His advice to established industry leaders is simple: show up. Attend an FLN networking event, meet the next generation and see what they have to offer.
As technology and AI continue to reshape the workplace, McLaughlin believes human connection will become even more important. Young professionals who can understand people, bridge gaps and build relationships will be essential to the industry's future.
Ultimately, what excites McLaughlin most is watching those emerging leaders progress.
“I love business but, it is all about the people,” he said. “I look forward to seeing this next generation take new leadership roles.”
