Mexico: A Car-Passionate Country With a Growing Middle Class

Home to the Baja 500 and a Grand Prix, Mexico is a country of nearly 130 million people, and it is an increasingly important destination for U.S. automotive specialty-equipment products. With a growing middle class (approximately 39% of the population has enough disposable income to own a vehicle, a computer and other “wants”), Mexican car enthusiasts are eager for U.S. products to enhance their off-road, motorsports and classic-car restoration experiences. U.S. products are a natural fit in Mexico, as many of the vehicles on the roads there are from the United States or are built in Mexico by U.S. car manufacturers.
Like their northern neighbors, Mexicans have a strong affinity for pickups and SUVs, which are practical on ill-maintained roads as well as for off-roading. With both countries enjoying many common vehicles, parts created in the United States often fit vehicles sold in Mexico without the need for retooling.
There are two shows that can help U.S. companies network with buyers in Mexico and other Latin American countries. For the first, you don’t even need to leave the United States.
The annual SEMA Show, held each year in early November in Las Vegas, draws more than 160,000 visitors. One in four buyers attending the trade-only event come from outside the United States, including large numbers of distributors from Mexico and other Latin American countries.
Showing the growing interest in the region, the 2018 SEMA Show spotlighted the region with the first-ever roundtable on the Latin American market, drawing attendance of more than 100 buyers based in the region. They joined U.S. companies currently exporting or looking to begin exporting to Mexico or its southern neighbors.
Another growing show—the largest in Latin America—is the annual INA PAACE Automechanika Show, which will be held July 10–12, 2019, at the Centro Banamex in Mexico City. In addition to the thousands of products, services and resources available on the exhibit-hall floor, the event offers valuable education and training, unmatched business solutions, exciting networking events and more.
Last year’s show attracted more than 500 exhibiting companies and 20,000 attendees. The show features more than 100 custom vehicles as well as displays in a wide variety of product groups, including parts/components; electronics/systems; accessories/customizing; car care/reconditioning; alternative drive systems/digital solutions; dealer workshop management; tires; and repair/maintenance.
