UTV Market UpdateStill riding the wave of a recent marketplace shift, the utility task vehicle, better known as the UTV or side-by-side, is at a major crossroads. Intensive growth in product development and surging sales have helped the side-by-side to become a new staple in the off-road community.


  • Car CareThe term restyling covers a broad range of automotive upgrades. While the biggest portion of the segment is made up of accessory and appearance products for both interiors and exteriors, it can also include certain performance parts, wheels, tires and suspension systems that don’t fit neatly into another category. Since the Great Recession, the restyling market has seen steady growth, according to the “2016 SEMA Market Report,” and annual retail sales in the segment are now more than $5.22 billion.

Its primary mission is to pursue federal policy reforms for rebuilding and expanding the nation’s recreation-related infrastructure. ORIR represents everything from motorized recreation to boating, camping, fishing, hiking and archery. Outdoor recreation generates an estimated $646 billion in direct spending and supports more than 6 million jobs.

Government Affairs

  • Law & OrderAlaska OHV Area: Legislation was introduced establishing the Jonesville Public Use Area to protect, maintain, perpetuate and enhance year-round public recreation. The bill would, among other things, provide opportunities for the public to enjoy the area through a full spectrum of public uses, including the maintenance and enhancement of off-road vehicle recreational opportunities.

  • ’18 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1: Chevrolet engineers are polishing the final details of what is set to become the swan song of the C7 Corvette generation.

    ’18 Jeep Wrangler: The new Wrangler will resemble the outgoing one, but various aerodynamic tweaks will make it less upright.

    ’19 Chevrolet Camaro: The Camaro will get a mid-cycle lift next year. Based on the camouflage on this prototype, the standard models will get some comprehensive changes from the A-pillar forward and at the rear.

    ’19 Ford Mustang GT500: Building on the GT350 and GT350R, the Ford Mustang GT500 is expected to be the next step in the hyper-musclecar stakes.

  • UAEThe United Arab Emirates (UAE) was the venue for the sixth annual SEMA Middle East Business Development Program in March. The 2017 event brought together pre-vetted trade buyers from 11 nations to meet with a delegation of 40 U.S. SEMA-member companies. The delegation included those returning for an additional SEMA Middle East program, such as aFe Power, Borla Performance Industries, COMP Cams and Injen Technology, as well as more than 23 manufacturers traveling to the Middle East with SEMA for the first time.


New Products

  • Collision RepairThe global collision-repair market is expected to reach a value of $200 billion by 2022, according to a 2016 automotive collision market report by Global Market Insights. Researchers maintain that the segment is growing, with a number of economic trends contributing to older cars on the road, and more traffic in cities leading to increased numbers of minor accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 6,064,000 police-reported crashes in 2014. Those crashes resulted in $34.1 billion in collision-repair revenue, according to web-based consulting service Collision Advice.

  • Appearance New ProductsAssembled here are the restyling and car-care products from the New Products Showcase at the 2016 SEMA Show. It’s a steadily growing Show section and was up in net square footage 13% from 2015. Product categories you’ll find within the segment are interior and exterior appearance and styling enhancements, car-care maintenance, replacement parts and general accessories.

  • PowersportsThe powersports niche is currently demonstrating fantastic growth, both in sales figures and product offerings. Categories like the UTV market are leading the charge, increasing total unit sales each year and expanding product lines to accommodate an eager consumer base. Reflecting this notion, 2017 SEMA Show data demonstrates that the Powersports category is on track to record double-digit growth in total booth space from last year’s Show.     Bill Burke is credited with recognizing the competitive edge that could come from adapting a World War II fighter plane’s drop tank—the very essence of streamlining—into a land-speed racer. As he tells it, he first noticed the wing tanks in Guadalcanal while watching sailors unload them off a barge. A hot rodder before the war, Burke measured the tanks and figured that their dimensions could accommodate a Ford rearend and engine block.
