The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles can display only a portion of its vast collection at any given time. Hundreds of classic cars are kept in storage when not on display, and managing vehicle storage is a never-ending job.

Museum Collection Manager Tom Kenney says, “In our outer perimeter storage areas, where the environment is less than pristine, we use covers to keep dust, greasy air and particulate matter (from exhausts and general environmental fallout) from settling on the finishes.”

Covercraft suggested DUSTOP for this task. According to the company, DUSTOP’s outer layer is tough, yet still relatively soft, and underneath it are breathable layers of material designed to keep out dust, dirt and airborne chemical fallout.

Covercraft currently has more than 80,000 patterns in its library, but some of Petersen’s exotic vehicles, such as the one-off Jonckheere-bodied ’25 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Aerodynamic Coupe, required special pattern measuring, using Covercraft’s dimension sheet, which specifies all the required measurements, according to the company.

Pirelli Celebrates 10 Years in Rome, Georgia
Ten years ago, Pirelli began producing tires at
a 400,000-sq.-ft. facility on a 127-acre tract of land in the Floyd County
Industrial Park in Rome, Georgia. The Italian tire manufacturer found
the area attractive to house its proprietary Modular Integrated
Robotized System (MIRS) and contemporaneously named Rome its North
American Headquarters for business operations in the United States and
Canada.

Ten years and some 3 million tires later, Rome is headquarters for
Pirelli’s NAFTA Region that adds Mexican operations to the North
American organization led by region Chairman and CEO Paolo Ferrari. The
facility, which also hosts one of five R&D centers Pirelli has
around the world, employs more than 250 people in corporate, production
and engineering roles.                                    

Pirelli commemorated its 10-year anniversary by inaugurating an exhibit
at the Rome Area History Museum that includes the first tire produced at
the facility. Local dignitaries were on hand to help celebrate the
occasion, which will become a permanent installation as Pirelli has
become a museum partner. Pirelli plans to maintain an active presence
in the community in initiatives that are closely tied to education and
environmental awareness.

The celebration was capped by a tour of
Pirelli’s campus in Rome hosted by Ferrari for United States Senator
Johnny Isakson and local officials where they were able to see MIRS in
action.

Classic Industries Kicks Off 35th Anniversary Celebration at Woodward Dream Cruise
Classic Industries is continuing its 35th anniversary by taking a break from the sun and sand of Huntington Beach, California, and heading to Detroit for the cruise-in event on Woodward Avenue. In addition to the fact that the vehicles behind the restoration hobby originated from Detroit, Classic Industries was founded by a Detroit native, Jeff Leonard, who came to Southern California, noticed many well-preserved ’60’s musclecars and saw a demand for parts and accessories to keep these vehicles on the road.

Leonard started his company in the mid ’70s and, 35 years later, continues to be a player in the GM, Dodge and Plymouth restoration parts market. From its headquarters in Surf City, USA, Classic Industries produces eight different mail-order catalogs that help classic car enthusiasts keep their cars on the road.

Classic Industries will set up at the Northwood Shopping Center at the corner of Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road, August 18, 2012. Anyone who visits the Classic Industries booth to say “Happy 35th Anniversary!” will receive a free Classic Industries Camaro poster and vintage Classic Camaro decal featuring the original company logo, while supplies last.

Dana Increases Aftermarket Customer Support with New Distribution Centers in Mexico, China
Dana Holding Corp. has announced the opening of new distribution centers in China and Mexico to increase product availability, improve delivery times and provide additional support to its growing number of aftermarket customers.

These centers in Toluca, Mexico, and Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China, bring to 17 the total number of aftermarket-dedicated distribution centers globally and will serve as hubs in each region to provide parts for Dana's light-vehicle, commercial-vehicle and off-highway customers.

The Mexico distribution center opened last month and supplies on-highway aftermarket products. Dana will add off-highway products in the near future. The facility in China will be fully operational this month, initially delivering off-highway products, but adding light-vehicle components in the coming months.

Sears Selects Motorz TV Host as Craftsman Tool Catalog Spokesperson                               
"Motorz" has announced that Sears Holdings Corp. has selected Chris Duke, host of "Motorz," as the exclusive automotive tool spokesperson and advisor for all Sears automotive print and online catalogs. The decision was announced this month as part of a growing relationship between the two companies. Duke is a respected television personality, producer and 13-year automotive industry veteran.

Galpin Motors Announces Addition of Its Newest Franchise—Galpin Volkswagen
Galpin Motors has announced that it has opened its newest franchise—Galpin Volkswagen—on the site of its former Saturn of the Valley location in North Hills, California. Galpin VW will serve customers throughout Southern California with the brand’s full line of cars and SUVs.

The new dealership opened August 1 for sales and service. It has begun to receive the first vehicles from its initial allocation of almost 500 new vehicles. In the coming weeks, Galpin VW will welcome two truckloads of inventory each day for nearly 30 days.

Overseeing Galpin VW will be General Manager Michael Schwartz. A veteran of the auto industry for more than 14 years, Schwartz began his career with Ford Motor Credit working in several positions at the company before joining Galpin Motors nine years ago. In the years prior to becoming the general manager of Galpin Volkswagen, Schwartz worked as both a general used-car sales manager and director of finance for Galpin.

In addition to the franchises Galpin currently maintains, the company also includes the customizing shop—Galpin Auto Sports.
