  •   1970 "TransCammer" Mustang
Philip Koenen's 1970 "TransCammer" Mustang will appear in the upcoming fifth edition of the popular video game.

Of the many awards given annually at the SEMA Show, only one offers the winner the prize of video game immortality. The seventh annual Gran Turismo Awards, held at the 2009 SEMA Show, recognized Philip Koenen and his 1970 Ford Mustang "TransCammer" with Best Hot Rod and the coveted Best in Show awards.

The latter award earns Koenen's car a spot in the forthcoming Gran Turismo 5 as a fully driveable player selection, and was selected as Best in Show by the game's creator, Kazunori Yamauchi.

"The Gran Turismo Awards continue to seek out and reward automotive enthusiasts who demonstrate passion for outstanding design and performance, while also celebrating a strong collaboration with the gaming industry," Yamauchi said. "We have been very pleased with the high quality of vehicles vying for the award the past seven years and look forward to having this 1970 Ford Mustang TransCammer join our list of distinguished past winners as part of the Gran Turismo franchise."

Koenen's Mustang will join 2008 winner Brian Filoteo's Infiniti G37 and 2007 winner Marcel Horn's HPA Audi TT in the fifth installment of the game franchise, which according to Sony has sold more than 53 million units worldwide. Both Filoteo and Horn's cars were available for guests to drive in the latest version of the game, shown at the event.

Prior to the 2009 SEMA Show, all exhibitors were invited to enter their vehicles into the Gran Turismo Awards, which honor five different categories: Best Domestic Automobile; Best European Import; Best Hot Rod; Best Asian Import; and Best Truck/SUV. Autowriters from media outlets, including Motor Trend, European Tuner, and Import Tuner acted as judges, judging each category on a balance between performance, style and speed.

    The five category winners were:
-Best Domestic: Nicholas Ashby, Moment Carbon Camaro
-Best European Import: KC Howet, 2009 Underground Racing Lamborghini LP560-4TT
-Best Hot Rod: Philip Koenen, "Trans-Cammer" 1970 Ford Mustang
-Best Asian Import: Chris Rado, World Racing Scion TC.
-Best Truck/SUV: Scott Bailey and Tony Vanillo, Ford F250 Unlimited 2 Class short-course race truck.

  •   PWA 2009 Persons of the Year
SEMA Chairman Rick Rollins (left) and PWA President Donnie Eatherly (right) recognize PWA Persons of the Year Chris Thomson (second from left) and Adrian Murray. Below, Rollins, Eatherly and SEMA President Chris Kersting (far right) honor PWA Manufacturers of the Year K&N Engineering and AIRAID Filter Company, with Steve Rogers and Thomson accepting on behalf of both, respectively.
PWA 2009 Manufacturers of the Year

The Performance Warehouse Association (PWA) presented its awards for Person of the Year and Manufacturer of the Year during the Industry Awards Banquet at the 2009 SEMA Show.

PWA Persons of the Year—Chris Thomson and Adrian Murray

In recognition of their outstanding contributions to warehouse distributors and in appreciation of their conscientious dedication as members of the specialty-equipment industry, PWA named Chris Thomson and Adrian Murray as its Persons of the Year.

Thomson, a Phoenix native, has broad industry experience, including tenures with companies such as Mr. Gasket, Flowtech and Holley Performance, to his current position as national sales manager for AIRAID Filter Company. Thomson has helped AIRAID grow from fledgling manufacturer to winning back-to-back titles of Manufacturers’ Rep Council (MRC) Sales Team of the year in 2004 and 2005.

Murray is a 25-year auto industry veteran, starting as a salesman for Federal-Mogul in 1978, first in Los Angeles, then later in Dallas. A nearly 11-year stay at Edelbrock followed, first as national sales manager, then as vice president of sales. A desire to move back to Texas resulted in Murray joining Painless Wiring, now Painless Performance, in Fort Worth. Murray has overseen the company’s emergence as a key player in the performance aftermarket.

PWA Manufacturers of the Year—AIRAID Filter Company and K&N Engineering

The Manufacturer of the Year Award recognizes AIRAID's and K&N Engineering's contributions to the industry and their support of warehouse distributors and merchandise distribution.

Since 1997, AIRAID Filter Company has been manufacturing and distributing a complete line of cool air intake systems, premium air filters, modular intake tubes and throttle body spacers for pickups and SUVs.

K&N Engineering, meanwhile, pioneered the reusable high-flow cotton air filter in 1969. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the company now sells more than 5,000 products in more than 30 countries.

  • About 150 companies were recognized by an international panel of automotive experts participating in the 2009 SEMA Show Global Media Awards Program. Marking the sixth consecutive year, the unique program consists of a prestigious group of international journalists serving as judges.

In 2009, the program included 27 judges from 15 key automotive markets. Each judge carefully reviewed and evaluated the items in the New Products Showcase at the SEMA Show, before selecting those which they felt would resonate and appeal most to consumers in their home countries.

Here are pictures of the event and its winners.

  • The SEMA Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve funding for the creation of a uniform, all-industry product information data pool. The data pool will enable the sharing of information between trading partners, e-Catalogs and those requiring the ability to perform computer lookups to sell more parts. The first of its kind, the pool will be a comprehensive, one-stop service to SEMA's membership and to all other suppliers and resellers in the North American aftermarket.

“SEMA leadership is keenly aware of the critical role that data plays in an increasingly technologically enabled specialty aftermarket,” said SEMA Chairman Rick Rollins. “Our members understand that selling more of our products through existing specialty channels and to a broader audience through replacement parts outlets requires readily available, complete, standardized and validated product information. This pool will provide that critical service.”

According to SEMA Board Member and Business Technology Committee (BTC) Chairman Bob Moore, "the BTC has spent the last three years closely studying the needs of the specialty aftermarket as well as those of the replacement segment. All of our design specifications have been created to service those needs.

“The SEMA marketplace relies more heavily on product attribute data than does the replacement parts aftermarket,” Moore added. “Because specialty products are more often about how they enhance a vehicle’s performance or appearance, data related to performance, appearance or horsepower is sometimes more important than the make and year of vehicles the product fits. That's why the vision for this pool from the outset was to focus on product attribute data.”

Moore also noted that today's market is served by a range of catalog and data providers who focus on make/model/year lookups.

“Our expectation is that providing an economical, easy-to-use resource for acquiring product data will spur the creation of applications that search product attributes in addition to make/model/year. That eventuality will enhance the salability of specialty products at every level in both segments. Additionally, it will provide a potential for enhanced services by current providers of make/model/year lookups.

"Product attribute information is critically important to the automotive aftermarket overall, and today there is no reliable single source for it. The SEMA data pool will fill that void in a credible, cost-effective manner. The SEMA BTC anticipates having a working data pool operating for initial participants by close of the first quarter of 2010."

  •   Steve Bolio
Veteran of the specialty-equipment industry and SEMA Hall of Fame member Steve Bolio has passed away.

The industry mourns the loss of one of its most active members and SEMA Hall of Famer Steve Bolio.

Colleagues and friends of Mr. Bolio were contacted early Wednesday morning with the news of his passing.

Bolio’s dedication and enthusiasm are defined by his 45 years of participation in the specialty-equipment industry. “Steve was one of those people who cared deeply about the industry and the people in it,” said Chris Kersting, president and CEO of SEMA. ”He was actively engaged in the leadership of the association throughout his career, dedicating a tremendous amount of time, effort and care to making the industry strong. He will be greatly missed.”

Bolio’s volunteer contributions with SEMA are extensive. He served six years on the SEMA Board of Directors, was a member of the SEMA Executive Committee for five years and was a member of the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN) Select Committee. He also headed the SEMA Awards Committee Task Force, was a member of the SEMA Show Committee, offered his support as a mentor through the SEMA Mentoring Program, was an active member of the Manufacturers’ Rep Council (MRC) for many years and served on the MRC Select Committee. In 2006, he was inducted to the SEMA Hall of Fame.

For the past 20 years, Bolio has been a partner with John “Skip” Scafidi, son of his mentor, in the manufacturers’ rep firm of Scafidi-Bolio & Associates. Earlier this year, Bolio along with his son Mike teamed up to launch Fulcrum Marketing, a manufacturers’ rep firm aimed at specialty automotive industry manufacturers and distributors.

Services for Bolio will be held Monday, November 23, 10:00 a.m., at Grace Chapel in Lexington, Massachusetts (781/862-6499). A wake is scheduled Sunday, November 22, 2:00-6:00 p.m. at Brasco & Sons Funeral Home (781/893-6260) in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Business Tools

  • Mainstream consumers are discovering the benefits of vehicle customization through an industry-wide consumer awareness program. Articles educating the public on how the industry’s products could give their older car or truck a new look or increase its performance were developed in June. The articles have attracted media attention from throughout the country, resulting in 985 published stories in mainstream newspapers and websites. Notable clips include the Chicago Sun-Times, southern California’s Orange Country Register, Flint Journal in Michigan and the Reading Eagle in Pennsylvania.

Read two of the most recent articles from the outreach campaign.

  • The Specialty Equipment Market Association was established in 1963. It serves the industry with market research, as a legislative watchdog, as an educational outlet and as an advocate for the opening of international markets. Its membership has grown to include more than 7,300 companies, including manufacturers, WDs, jobbers, and retailers serving every automotive niche.

The Performance Warehouse Association (PWA) was founded in 1971 with goals very similar to those of SEMA. PWA's membership includes specialty automotive parts wholesalers who have banded together to deal with management, financial and legislative issues.

Each of the associations either has just installed or is about to install new leadership. Rick Rollins has assumed the chairmanship of the SEMA Board of Directors, and Donnie Eatherly will take the reins of PWA as its new president beginning in January. Both are industry veterans who share the unique perspective of years of volunteer experience in both associations.

Recently, SEMA News had the opportunity to speak with the two executives about how SEMA and PWA might work together.

  • What do West Point cadets, General George Patton and your business have in common? If you said the book On War, you likely attended Tom Shay’s three-part workshop at the 2009 SEMA Show. Shay, of Profits+Plus, helped participants determine strategies and tactics they can use to make 2010 a winning year, largely based on principles in the influential text cited by both Patton and still taught by West Point instructors.

If you couldn’t make Shay’s seminar at the SEMA Show, here's your chance to hear it online on December 3, 10:00–11:00 a.m. (PST) during an exclusive webinar. Registration is free for SEMA members, $29 for non-members.

Shay will discuss how On War continues to be relevant today, as businesses meet ongoing challenges from competitors. The key, Shay says, is determining which of several strategies—attacker, defender, flanker, guerilla warrior, for example—best suits your business needs and resources.

Deciding which of the four strategies is proper for your business, you should then begin to think about how you will carry out your strategy with tactics that will allow you to get your message to the customers that are most likely to be attracted to the strategy your business has taken.

Don't wait! Register now to attend this informative webinar today!

New Products and Technology

  • 2012 BMW 3 Series prototype

The next-generation 2012 BMW 3-Series may seem a long way off, but Brenda Priddy tells us these are the first shots of the next 3-Series prototype. From these photos, it appears the typical 3-Series proportions—short rear overhang, aggressive stance typical of the E36 through current E90 models—will remain. But the overall look is slimmer and more toned than the current 3, Priddy says.

Her sources also tell her that the front of the car will receive a widened kidney grille (but smaller than the current 5-Series), and classic L-shaped lighting units and typical BMW layout in back. The convertible will retain the folding hardtop, as the current folding hardtop has proven to be the most successful 3-Series cabrio yet.

The next 3 will also likely incorporate the latest in BMW’s Efficient Dynamics technologies. Like the 1-series, there will be an active hybrid model using a range-extended three-cylinder engine connected to an electric motor as well as BMW's active aerodynamics, a solar roof panel for energy efficiency in the use of interior controls, brake energy regeneration, stop-start and pre-heating technology for the engine, gearbox and differential.

Law & Order

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has again postponed the effective date for the revised lighting standard, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, from December 1, 2009 to December 1, 2012. The agency wants the extra time to confirm that there were no substantive changes included when the agency published the reorganized and simplified FMVSS 108 in 2007. The revised standard was originally scheduled to take effect in 2008.

The lighting standard has been amended many times since it was first adopted in 1967 in order to address technological advances and enhance safety. As a consequence, the old regulation was unnecessarily complex and difficult to understand.

The NHTSA will also use the additional time to address petitions from some industry groups for additional clarifications or revisions to FMVSS No. 108. Early compliance to the revised standard continues to be permitted. Both the old and new versions of 108 are published in one location: http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2008/octqtr/pdf/49cfr571.108.pdf. The “new” version starts at page 76.

Questions or comments may be directed to Steve McDonald.

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a proposed rule to increase the tire test pressure for temporary-use spare tires (T-tires) from 52 pounds per square inch (psi) to 60 psi. The proposed change responds to a petition from the Tire & Rim Association (TRA).

In supporting the requested change, the NHTSA believes the revised test pressure will increase the stringency of the test while incorporating real-world conditions. The revision would also harmonize the U.S. standard with various international standards, including the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and Japanese regulations.

Chairman Karl Stearns credits the hard work of the council members for
the success of the group's NovemberFest at the 2009 SEMA Show.

    PRO NovemberFest Is Huge Success

    The
first-ever PRO Industry Awards reception held at the SEMA Show was an
overwhelming success for the PRO council. Branded "NovemberFest," the
reception played to a packed house, as more than 200 attendees filled
Ballrooms D, E, F and G at the Las Vegas Hilton to standing room only.
The evening included a free commemorative event T-shirt, German-themed
food and bar menus and presentations of PRO’s annual industry awards.

    "I
am so proud of this council,” said PRO Chairman Karl Stearns. “At our
LRP in June, the idea for a reception was introduced. Someone suggested
we come up with a brand for the event so that it wouldn’t just be
another reception. Someone else suggested "NovemberFest," and the Select Committee was off and running. Select committee members designed
the logo, menu, t-shirt and the bookmark invitation concept and
solicited sponsorship monies. SEMA did the final invitation layout, and
we kept them apprised every step of the way to make sure nothing fell
off the track. At the Show, we all pushed the invitations from our
booths and in the aisles. The process was a textbook volunteer
cooperation. The success of the actual event is icing on the cake.
We’re already looking forward to next year!"

NovemberFest was held on Tuesday, November 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Las Vegas Hilton.

      Tony Schumacher Wins
Top Fuel pilot and defending world champion Tony Schumacher.

SCHUMACHER EARNS SIXTH STRAIGHT, SEVENTH OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP: In one of the most exciting semifinal rounds in NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing history, Top Fuel pilot and defending world champion Tony Schumacher won his sixth straight and seventh overall world championship after fellow competitor and second-place driver Larry Dixon fell to Spencer Massey. Schumacher also lost to teammate Antron Brown in the semis, but his two-point lead was just enough to give the champ his first world championship with new crew chief Mike Green.

Though the excitement was saved for Sunday afternoon, the championship-winning run may have come the night before when Schumacher and his U.S. Army dragster team came out and posted a 3.772-second run in the final round of qualifying to steal the No. 1 qualifier from Dixon and the extra three bonus points that come in qualifying. Those extra points gave Schumacher a two-point lead going into eliminations on Sunday and when both drivers went out in the semifinal round, Schumacher clinched his seventh title.

“That run (Saturday) night was bone-crushing, weight-of-the-world pressure, and that U.S. Army team came through—unbelievable.” Schumacher noted in his meeting with the media after he was crowned champion that the world championship trophy would find a special home within the next few weeks.

“You can’t mention it before the race because you don’t know if you’re going to win it, but this thing’s going to sit at Fort Hood for the families. I don’t think there’s any question about it; it has to be there. They deserve it. This is an Army strong trophy, and it’s going to sit there and be beautiful.” Schumacher finished the season with two No. 1 qualifiers, 47 round wins and five wins in seven final-round appearances.

    Robert Hight Wins
Funny Car driver Robert Hight jumped from 10th to first place in the point standings within
the final six races to earn his first NHRA Full Throttle
    Drag Racing world championship.

HIGHT WINS FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, FIRST FOR JFR SINCE ‘06: After barely making it into the Countdown to 1 playoffs in the final 10th-place spot, Funny Car driver Robert Hight made one of the biggest moves in NHRA history, jumping from 10th to first place in the point standings within the final six races of the season to earn his first NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing world championship.

After a stellar performance in front of his hometown crowd at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, which included qualifying second for the race, Hight clinched his first world championship Saturday night as qualifying for the Auto Club NHRA Finals came to an end. For Hight, driving his Auto Club Ford Mustang to his first world championship at his hometown track and his sponsor’s event, the feelings couldn’t be stronger. “Coming so close so many times before makes this really special, but it’s really all about this team,” said Hight. “It’s a whole team behind this, starting with John Force, who put me with the best people. The best advice he gave me was to team up with Jimmy and become his buddy, like he and [Austin] Coil and just live with him and that’s what I’ve done.

He’s like my brother. I can’t thank John enough for taking a chance on a guy who’d never driven anything but a Ford F-150 truck and for the sponsors like AAA for supporting John.” Hight finished the season with four No. 1 qualifiers, 30 round wins and three wins in four final round appearances.

      Mike Edwards Wins
Mike Edwards wins his first NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Championship in Pro Stock.

EDWARDS CAPS OFF NEAR PERFECT SEASON WITH FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: Domination seemed to be the name of Mike Edwards’ 2009 campaign for the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing world championship in Pro Stock, and his performance at the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona was no exception. Edwards dominated qualifying for the event and earned his first world championship as qualifying came to an end Saturday night.

Edwards took the top spot in each of the four qualifying sessions, driving his A.R.T./Young Life Pontiac GXP to the top spot of the field night in and night out, and when all was said and done, hoisted his first world championship trophy in front of the Southern California crowd as the sun went down Saturday night.

“I can say words, but they just don’t describe the feeling I have,” said Edwards. “It’s so exciting for me and it’s been such a long time coming, but it’s all worth it. It’s Roger Stahl and a bunch of guys who got together a couple of years ago and decided to give it our best effort. We decided we’d try one time to do it the right way and started our shop and we’ve all just kept pulling at the same end of the rope and here we are, living our dream.”

Though Edwards didn’t finish the season with a win, he’ll never forget his 2009 Auto Club NHRA Finals performance. Edwards finishes the 2009 season with an impressive 16 No. 1 qualifiers (tied for the most in a season in NHRA history), 53 round wins and five wins in 10 final-round appearances.

    Hector Arana Wins
After 19 years of competition, Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Hector Arana claimed his first world championship.

ARANA EARNS FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN 19-YEAR CAREER: To say that Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Hector Arana’s first world championship was a long time coming would be an understatement. The rider has had a stellar 19-year career, but had never finished higher than fifth in the point standings. But with an impressive 2009 season, which included two wins in three final round appearances in the six-race, Countdown to 1 playoffs, Arana was well on his way to his first world championship.

But a second-round loss in eliminations at the Auto Club NHRA Finals put Arana’s hopes in jeopardy as second-place driver Eddie Krawiec had a chance to snatch the world championship away. But when Krawiec was unable to set a national record, Arana was able to celebrate his first world championship after almost two decades of racing.

“It hasn’t really hit me yet,” said Arana. “I do feel better, lighter now that the stress is over and the worries. It’s an awesome feeling to have this accomplishment this year. A lot of things happened this year that I accomplished: I won five races, I won three in a row, I set the national record, and I won the championship. This is awesome.” Though it was a long time coming, Arana would be the first to admit that good things come to those who wait.

We had a few flashes of brilliance, like (Sunday), where we showed what we can do; we just didn’t do it often enough.”
