JERSEY: International Speedway Corporation officials are again talking to officials with the Meadowlands Sports Complex about the possibility of building a race track around the existing horse track in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
FINED: Crew chiefs Steve Letarte and Chad Knaus were each fined $100,000 and suspended six races, while their Hendrick Motorsports drivers Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson were each docked 100 points, as well as team owner Rick Hendrick, because both cars failed pre-qualifying inspection at Infineon Raceway last Friday.

SUE ME, I’LL SUE YOU: NASCAR has filed a $100-million countersuit against AT&T Mobility/Cingular Wireless and AT&T, Inc., with NASCAR alleging breach of contract, fraud and misrepresentation and conspiracy to aid and abet wrongful interference with Nextel’s exclusive sponsorship agreement in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. The suit comes after AT&T, which purchased Cingular earlier this year, won an injunction against NASCAR in May, which allows it to display its logos on the Richard Childress Racing No. 31 driven by Jeff Burton.
The COMP Performance Group hired Brian Reese as director of business development. Reese was formerly the director of engineering for SLP Performance Parts, specializing in aftermarket performance with a focus on late-model engines. His professional career started at General Motors where he worked in Michigan at the Warren Technical Center and Milford Proving Grounds.

BREAK THROUGH: Formula One rookie Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian Grand Prix, becoming the first black driver to win a Formula One event. The British racer leads the World Driving Championship standings entering Sunday’s annual U.S. Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
United Components Inc.’s (UCI) board of directors appointed Daniel Johnston as its new chief financial officer. Johnston, who will also serve as a member of the board, was previously vice president and chief financial officer of Solae LLC, a producer of soy-based food products. Prior to Solae, Johnston spent more than 10 years in senior financial and operational positions at United Industries Corp.
