The She Shed Collective Creates Space to Showcase and Support Women in Skilled Trades Within the Automotive Industry

Three trailblazing organizations working to bolster women in skilled trades are joining forces to host the 'She Shed Collective' within the largest automotive trade show in the U.S. The She Shed will operate throughout the week of the SEMA Show with hands-on workshops, expert panels, autograph sessions, and an on-site tattoo artist. While creating a space within SEMA Show to build community that encourages and empowers women, the collaboration will showcase how vital and growing tradeswomen are within the automotive industry. Each contributing organization—Girl Gang Garage, The Jessi Combs Foundation, and Real Deal Revolution—has been leading industry growth through their own initiatives for years.

"If you can see it, you can be it," said Bogi Latiner of Girl Gang Garage. The She Shed will highlight tradeswomen, from professionals to hobbyists, while also showcasing three women-built vehicles. "We want women to walk away energized and inspired knowing that there's space and support for them in the automotive industry," said Theresa Contreras of Real Deal Revolution. "We also want men to recognize the many ways in which they can and do support us." Tradeswomen make up just 2% of automotive tradespeople, but there is plenty of evidence that the number is growing, in part due to the work Girl Gang Garage, The Jessi Combs Foundation and Real Deal Revolution have been doing.

"Women working in the trades are trailblazers growing the industry, and that can be a lonely position to be in," said Dana Wilke of The Jessi Combs Foundation. "We're collaborating to show women that they're not alone, there's someone else who understands them and is there to support them." The She Shed will feature women of all generations, from young rising stars to industry veterans. "Seeing and experiencing the joy and meaning of connection is when people's perception of why it matters is transformed," said Theresa Contreras of Real Deal Revolution.

SEMA Event Details

The She Shed Collective can be found at Booth #24663, Central Hall. The booth will host hands-on workshops, expert panels and autograph sessions throughout the SEMA Show week, including an on-site tattoo artist on Friday. An after-hours reception for women in the industry will be held Tuesday, October 31, 6:00-9:00 p.m. PDT at Las Vegas Marriott.

The festival is the natural evolution of the passion for all things automotive exemplified at the SEMA Show. The Association started to further highlight and share that passion with the enthusiast public in 2011 with the SEMA Cruise, which evolved in 2014 with SEMA Ignited, the official Friday night after-party for the SEMA Show. Now, it's evolving again with this new festival format that celebrates the relationship between motorsports, music and car culture.

Featured attractions include:

The Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) has announced theSCRS complete lineup of three sessions to be delivered as part of the OEM Collision Repair Technology Summit (Summit), taking place Thursday, November 2, in the Las Vegas Convention Center as part of the 2023 SEMA Show. The first session of the Summit begins at 9:00 a.m. PDT and concludes with this third final session at 1:00 p.m. PDT.

Join the collision repair industry from 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. PDT for the OEM Collision Repair Technology Summit - Session III – Research and validation of calibration solutions

Visit bit.ly/RDE2023 to register online for this and related valuable Repairer Driven Education (RDE) sessions, which kick off on Monday, October 30, the day before the Show floor opens, giving early arrivals and exhibitors a chance to participate in these valuable sessions. Interested automotive professionals can choose sessions individually or register for a "Full Series Pass." (More details on registration and additional topics are below).

The OEM Summit offers attendees the opportunity to learn how vehicles, materials, technologies and trends are evolving in ways that will impact repair processes and repair businesses. Collision repair centers have an increasing responsibility for the proper calibration of safety systems on advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS)-equipped vehicles following a repair.

In this session, experts will explore pathways equipment manufacturers are taking to validate their solutions against varying sets of standards and approvals.

Doug Kelly, president, automotive aftermarket at Burke Porter Group, will discuss the evolution of providing calibration solutions and ADAS verification at OEM factories around the world. He will navigate how the lessons from OEM integration have helped to identify opportunities to serve the collision market, and meet unique challenges faced on the shop floor, different from those in the factory.

Jordan Krebs, product manager - alignment and ADAS, Americas of Snap-on Equipment, will join Summit attendees to discuss the process and learnings gained from seeking and receiving OEM approvals from specific manufacturers. The Snap-On Equipment brand John Bean manufactures the TRU-POINT ADAS calibration solution designed to perform recalibration according to the OEM specifications.

Josh McFarlin, president of AirPro Diagnostics, will then detail the process and results of independent testing on the Auggie, a patented mobile device for static recalibrations. McFarlin will focus on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) crash imminent braking (CIB) or automatic emergency braking (AEB) along with lane departure warning (LDW) test scenarios on vehicles re-calibrated with their solution.

The tests were performed by FT Techno of America (FTTA), an independent vehicle evaluation company at the Fowlerville Proving Grounds in Michigan.

Following the presentations, these equipment manufacturers will be joined by a panel of individuals from the collision repair industry familiar with requirements, expectations and challenges in performing OEM-compliant calibrations.

The panel will include Mike Anderson, president at Collision Advice; Andy Tylka, owner at TAG Auto Group and Midwest ADAS; and Mandy Wynn, national training and support manager at DCR Systems, LLC.

The Summit also features two additional sessions earlier in the day: Session I: Understanding OEM Insurance, 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. PDT. This program will feature Andrew Rose, [resident of OnStar Insurance; Mike Slattery, head of insurance for Rivian; and Rob Spencer, president of Toyota Insurance, and vice president of Toyota Motor Credit Corporation (TMCC). The presenters will provide a deep dive into the emerging world of OEM insurance programs and insurance products designed and underwritten to deliver unique coverage to complement their vehicles and positively impact the consumer experience during the claims and repair process.

In addition, Session II: North American Automotive Material Outlook and Implications to Collision Repair, 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. PDT, will be led by Abey Abraham, principal, automotive and materials at Ducker Carlisle and Bertrand Rakoto, director, strategic intelligence at Ducker Carlisle.

The Ducker Carlisle team will outline research on the expected metallic and non-metallic material strategies that collision repair facilities will encounter.

Professionals in the collision repair industry will need to contend with an increased transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) and alternate fuels, leading to dynamic changes in the material makeup of vehicles, including more advanced grades of steel and various types of aluminum, magnesium and composites.

Following the presentation, Abraham and Rakoto will introduce Dan Black, senior manager, service engineering-collision at Rivian and Matthew Pitta, body repair technical manager at Lucid Motors, to discuss material selections in their models and essential details the industry will need to understand when repairing those vehicles.

Be sure to register online for this and related valuable RDE sessions at the 2023 SEMA Show by visiting bit.ly/RDE2023 today!
