Spy Shots: BMW Considers 1-Series Hatch, Shooting Brake Models

BMW 1-series

Following a mid-cycle facelift in 2007, the next-gen BMW 1-Series is due to arrive in 2011, says Brenda Priddy, whose spy photo network captured this five-door mule during cold-weather testing.

According to AutoBild, which spoke to BMW's product development chief, the automaker is sticking to its current philosophy of fast-developing new segments. The new 1-Series lineup may feature a shooting brake-style two-door wagon/hatch that can accomodate adult rear passengers.

Priddy says that the existing BMW/PSA Group alliance, which already produces engines for MINI, would build engines ranging from 1.4L to 3.0L for the 1-Series. Turbos are a likely option, as are diesel and hybrid variants. An M version, however, remains unlikely.
