The next-generation Porsche 911, internally called the 998, has begun winter testing and Brenda Priddy got these candids of the venerable rear-drive/rear-engine machine topping up at the local Shell. Earlier reports in some media suggested that this was the 911 Turbo, Priddy says. But she notes the fake side-air intakes in front of the rear wheels and the huge rear wing hiding the smaller spoiler typical of standard 911s to disprove those assumptions. 

Compared to the current model, the front lights on this model stand more upright and the side mirrors have moved from the side window corner to the doorside. Priddy also notes that the rear lights are just translucent stickers made to cover the real taillights. Judging from the quad tailpipes on this prototype, Priddy says this is most likely one of the "S" models.

Watch for the next-generation 911 to feature the same flat-six engine, with upgraded power output and the new PDK dual-clutch gearbox, she says.
