  •   Hurst Mustang
This collectible BFGoodrich/Hurst Mustang ragtop makes 435 hp, with 100 percent of its auction price going to the new Victory Junction Gang Camp in Kansas City.

Looking for a unique, modern Mustang convertible? The 2010 BFGoodrich/Hurst Mustang, built by Hurst Performance in conjunction with Woodhouse Auto Family of Blair, Nebraska and BFGoodrich, will take to the auction block at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, January 18–24.

One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit the newest Victory Junction Gang Camp in Kansas City, Kansas.

The collectible pace car features a 435hp/400 lb.-ft. ROUSH supercharged engine, Magnaflow exhaust, Wilwood brakes and Hurst-tuned Eibach coilovers, springs and sway bar.

Hurst 20-inch wheels, BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW tires and a Hurst Competition/Plus short-throw shifter with gold anodized T-handle complete the package.

The winning bidder not only gets the Mustang, but also an invitation to tour the Camp founded by Kyle and Pattie Petty, an afternoon of hunting or fishing with Kyle and dinner with the family at Petty Farm.

"I will be there at the auction to congratulate the lucky bidder personally,” Kyle Petty adds.

The BFGoodrich/Hurst Mustang debuted at the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge at Miller Motorsports Park on September 19. Most recently the car paced the "Run to Victory Half Marathon and Five Mile Run/Walk" in Randleman, North Carolina, which raised more than $122,000 for Victory Junction. Hurst Performance President Ron Flint ran the five-mile portion of the race along with Victory Junction President Mike LePore.

"We are so excited to return to Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale with another highly collectible car," said Hurst Chairman Nate Shelton. "Hurst not only has a rich history in the world of pace cars, but we also feel privileged to give back as much as we can to deserving organizations such as Victory Junction. We're so thankful to our partners, Woodhouse, BFGoodrich, Reliable Carriers and Barrett-Jackson, and suppliers for helping us accomplish this."

      Tires at the SEMA Show
TIA is working with tire manufacturers to learn ways to improve the SEMA Show experience for the tire industry.

The Tire Industry Association (TIA), one of the world's leading authorities on tires and wheels, announced that progress continues on soliciting feedback from tire manufacturers about ways to increase SEMA Show value for the tire industry.

TIA hosted a focus group on December 17 attended by representatives from top tire manufacturers. The association is now working with these manufacturers to compile a list of recommendations and will reconvene later this month to discuss them.

"TIA wants to show tire manufacturers that we are serious about gaining their input on how the SEMA Show can be made even better, and we believe last month's focus group is a solid first step," said TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield.

TIA plans to present the recommendations to SEMA for review and response, recommendations it hopes can be implemented for the 2010 SEMA Show. During the focus group meeting, manufacturer representatives expressed appreciation for TIA's efforts to address their concerns and for assembling a group of knowledgeable industry professionals. This may lead to further meetings on other topics of vital importance to the tire industry.

"The SEMA Show is a valuable resource for our industry," Littlefield added. "We look forward to making it an even better destination for exhibitors and attendees."

  •   2011 Mustang 5.0
In addition to braking and handling upgrades, the 2011 Mustang will also re-introduce the acclaimed 5.0 engine.
      2011 Mustang 5.0
Ford plans to re-introduce its 5.0L V8 in the 2011 Mustang GT, offering an update to the iconic engine with increased horsepower and fuel economy.

Using enhanced variable camshaft timing, four-valve per cylinder heads and an all-aluminum block, the new 5.0 will make 412 hp and 390 lb.-ft. of torque. Mated to an automatic six-speed transmission, the engine is expected to help the 2011 Mustang deliver 25 highway miles per gallon and 17 in the city.

Knowing that customers would use the GT for club-racing, autocross and other grassroots motorsports, Ford V8 Engine Programs Manager Mike Harrison says the development team also optimized the engine for factors including windage and oil drainback under high-speed cornering conditions.

They also kept weight down, with the engine weighing 430 lbs. shipped, a weight savings of more than 20% from the previous 5.0, according to Ford.

This is the same team also responsible for developing the new 6.2L V8 for the Super Duty and Raptor (including the 500hp Baja 1000 Raptor R race engine) and a 7.0L, 800hp V8 for the Don Bowles Mustang drag-racing car.

Other upgrades to the 2011 Mustang include an available Brembo 14-inch brake package, an enhanced rear lower control arm and a stiffened rear sway bar.

For businesses that make and sell parts for the Mustang and the previous generations of 5.0, Ford's timing is perfect.

"With a little more than 300 hp and compared to the likes of the SRT-8 and Camaro, the Mustang has lost its edge," says Anthony Coles, managing director of marketing/product development for Mustangs Unlimited, a brick-and-mortar and online retailer in Georgia and Connecticut. "Ford really needed to do something more than a styling facelift to slug it out with GM and Chrysler."

Coles says his shop's 5.0 parts sales have leveled off over the past couple of years, but still account for the majority of '74–present parts sales.

"The new 5.0 'Coyote' program will breathe some much-needed excitement into the latest Mustang offering and, ultimately, will result in renewed excitement for aftermarket parts sales," Coles adds. "My 2007 GT is looking more and more ready to be traded in come next year."

New Products & Technology

  • Ford Raptor Crew

"In June, we heard that Ford was receiving requests for a crew-cab version of the 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor high-performance, off-road pickup," says auto spy photographer Brenda Priddy. "Ford marketing manager Mark Grueber said the company hasn't made any decisions, but that there is demand for it."

Judging from these exclusive spy photos of a Raptor test truck with four full-size doors, however, Priddy says it looks as if a decision has been made.

"Despite the camo and fake rear roof, you can't miss the Raptor's 35-inch wheels and tires, the unique mesh grille with 'FORD' emblazoned across it, and even the red hash mark at 12 o'clock on the steering wheel indicating that the front wheels are straight."

Hardcore off-road enthusiasts may have reservations about the 145-inch-long wheelbase, which is likely to compromise desert-running and rock-crawling performance in favor of extra interior space. Those with large families or the need to transfer crews of four or five adults into the wilderness, however, are likely to appreciate it.

Priddy expects the four-door Raptor to arrive in the 2011 model year with the new 6.2L V8 and perhaps make a debut at the Chicago Auto Show in February.

Law & Order

  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a tougher standard for ground-level ozone, the main ingredient in smog. Ozone forms when nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compound emissions from smokestacks, tailpipes and other sources combine in sunlight. Smog is created when particulates are added to the mix.

Acceptable ozone levels would range between 0.060 parts per million and 0.070 ppm. The current level is 0.075 ppm. The EPA contends the new standards are necessary to address heart and respiratory illnesses associated with smog. The agency estimates costs to implement the new standard could range from $19 billion to $90 billion, with manufacturers, oil refiners and utilities likely bearing most of the costs.

A number of counties across the nation would be in non-compliance with the new standard and forced to implement new strategies for reducing ozone. Controls could include requirements for additional pollution controls at gas stations, factories and power plants beginning in 2014.

The new standards could also spur state and local efforts to implement vehicle scrappage programs. SEMA is reviewing the proposal which is expected to be finalized this summer.

      Traffic Jam, China
China has surpassed the United States as the world's largest car market.

Chinese consumers, for the first time, purchased more cars and light trucks than U.S. car buyers. In 2009, China sold 12.8 million cars and light trucks (13.6 million with heavy-duty truck sales factored in) to become the world's largest vehicle market, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

The U.S. market, meanwhile, fell to second with sales of 10.4 million, its lowest level in more than 24 years.

The top beneficiaries of this 46% increase include China's non-domestic brands. GM reports that its sales were up 67% last year to a record 1.83 million vehicles.

Ford sales of both its vehicles manufactured in, and imported to, China increased 44% to 440,619, while VW saw its sales increase 38%. Toyota, meanwhile, experienced a sales jump of 21%, selling 709,000 vehicles.

With only 35 cars per 1,000 people in China (compared to 850 cars per 1,000 in the United States), the largest sales increases have come from consumers in second-tier cities and outlying areas (outside Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou). Government incentives for the purchase of small-engine autos (1.6 liters or less) have also been credited with a flurry of purchases.

  • It's been said before: For a product to be successful, the outside of the box is just as important as what's inside. Retailers, marketing and merchandising professionals know that a product's packaging or merchandising display may be the first and only opportunity to grab a customer's attention. Product packages and merchandise displays have less than a minute to get noticed, and these silent salesmen are armed to meet customer expectations and get them moving to the sales counter with product in hand.

AE Distributing and MacNeil Automotive Products have found innovative ways to grab customers' attention. Both companies were recognized during the 2009 SEMA Show with New Product Awards, AE Distributing in the Best New Packaging Display category and MacNeil Automotive Products in the Best New Merchandising Display category. PRO NovemberFest Is Huge Success
      NovemberFest Logo
PRO Chairman Karl Stearns credits the hard work of the council members for the success of the group's NovemberFest at the 2009 SEMA Show.

The first-ever PRO Industry Awards reception held at the SEMA Show was an overwhelming success for the PRO council. Branded "NovemberFest," the reception played to a packed house, as more than 200 attendees filled Ballrooms D, E, F and G at the Las Vegas Hilton to standing room only. The evening included a free commemorative event T-shirt, German-themed food and bar menus and presentations of PRO’s annual industry awards.

"I am so proud of this council,” said PRO Chairman Karl Stearns. “At our LRP in June, the idea for a reception was introduced. Someone suggested we come up with a brand for the event so that it wouldn’t just be another reception. Someone else suggested NovemberFest, and the Select Committee was off and running. Select Committee members designed the logo, menu, T-shirt and the bookmark invitation concept and solicited sponsorship monies.

"SEMA did the final invitation layout, and we kept them apprised every step of the way to make sure nothing fell off the track. At the Show, we all pushed the invitations from our booths and in the aisles. The process was a textbook volunteer cooperation. The success of the actual event is icing on the cake. We’re already looking forward to next year!"

NovemberFest was held on Tuesday, November 3, from 5:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m. at the Las Vegas Hilton.
