New Products & Technology

Ford's update to the Edge CUV has it looking badder and bolder for the 2011 model year, if these shots from Brenda Priddy's spy photographers are any indication.
"Underneath the camouflage, we can see two bars running across the grill that look more truck-like than the current model," Priddy notes. She adds that other sightings have shown a chrome ring running around the entire grille opening, with the whole assembly looking not unlike the Super Duty face. New projector headlights and a lower fascia also resemble the 2010 Fusion Sport.
In back, the Edge will get new, chrome-ringed taillights and possibly a new bumper. A large piece of camouflage draped over the entire dash suggests the interior may also get a refresh. Priddy adds that the Edge and its Lincoln MKX linemate will get the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that Ford recently announced. The automaker says the boosted powerplant is good for 230 hp and 240 lb.-ft. torque.

Roll Centre Kit Whiteline Automotive (Booth #20457) will introduce two new products at the 2009 SEMA Show.
Mustang KCA306
Part #: KCA306
Description: Roll Centre Kit
Application: Ford Mustang 2005 - 2010.
Retail Price: $297.23
Mustang KCA306 Product Information
Whiteline diagnosed 2005 on Mustang with a basic Macpherson strut front suspension that has poor roll centre control and excessive bump steer. With Mustang at standard ride height, front roll centre height is just over 2” above ground. With a mild lowering of only ¾” front roll centre migrates below ground level! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Basically it means you need a Whiteline Roll Centre Kit or “ROCK”! Mustang’s front roll geometry actually encourages roll the lower you go.A Whiteline “ROCK” is designed to raise the front roll centre geometry by using specially engineered ball-joints and tie rod ends while still maintaining original steering geometry.
Tests on Mustang showed that raising the front roll centre resulted in a substantial increase to front roll resistance and a significant reduction in suspension compression of the outside front wheel during cornering – equals less roll. The kit also covers bump steer correction with specially engineered tie rod ends. Bump steer is the toe-in or toe-out of the front wheels as the suspension goes from normal ride height through full bump (suspension system moves up) to full droop (suspension system moves down).

Wilwood Engineering (booth #25133) will introduce its front and rear D8-4 calipers, D52 calipers and new line of ProSpindles at the 2009 SEMA Show.
D8-4 Calipers
Wilwood’s front and rear D8-4 calipers are a direct bolt-on replacement for OE calipers on ’65-’82 Corvettes. Forged billet aluminum bodies, stainless steel pistons and competition style high-temperature seals put an end to the rust, bore pitting and seal failures that plague the original caliper design. D8-4 calipers mount in the original location over stock rotors, use the same style OE D8 brake pads and OE master cylinder. Save weight and gain reliability with the D8-4.
Note: Fits C2 and C3 factory steel wheels and C3 factory optional aluminum wheels. Does not fit Kellsey Hayes or replica knock-off wheels.
D52 Calipers
Wilwood’s new D52 calipers are a direct bolt-on replacement for all ’68 and later GM musclecars, passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks originally equipped with the big, single piston D52 pad calipers. The calipers are built to mount in the stock location, with stock dimension rotors, using regular OE type or aftermarket compound replacement pads and fitment anywhere the OE calipers were used.
The new D52 calipers provide a lightweight, high-strength, extreme-duty alternative for customized street machines and all competition vehicles that still require OE mounting. The forged billet aluminum bodies provide a substantial weight savings, without rust or corrosion, over the original cast iron calipers.
Stainless steel pistons with high temperature bore seals minimize heat transfer and provide maximum durability in the most extreme circumstances. A smaller bore rear model is available to help maintain proper front to rear bias on vehicles that have been converted to four wheel discs. Optional color finishes are available to compliment wheel, tire, and rotor upgrades on all types of customized machines.
ProSpindles
Wilwood’s ProSpindles are designed for custom suspensions configured around Pinto/Mustang ll geometry. The standard height version is used for applications where you wish to maintain the stock ride height. The 2-inch drop version is utilized when you want to effectively lower the ride height without disturbing the suspension geometry. The one-piece forged steel body is lightweight, yet nearly three times stronger than OE or aftermarket two-piece cast and steel replacement spindles.
Bolt-on steering arms are strong and allow the same spindle to be used on either side of a vehicle. The steering arms may also be inverted to help make corrections for bump steer based on the steering linkage location. Additionally, the spindle is one half-inch taller than OE spindles which effectively raises the front roll center geometry for improved handling characteristics. Integral mounting bosses on the spindle body provide the strongest possible attachment point for caliper brackets. ProSpindles use common Pinto and Mustang ll tie rod ends, ball joints, wheel bearings and seals.

Law & Order
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommended that hydrofluoroolefin (HFO-1234yf) be considered an acceptable substitute for chlorofluorocarbon “CFC-12” (also known as R-12 or Freon-12) in vehicle air-conditioning systems. Manufacturers of the substance would first need to take steps to prevent leakage issues, which could raise flammability concerns.
Use of the chemical would be limited to new vehicles until the EPA was satisfied that flammability could be adequately addressed with respect to retrofit equipment.
The EPA’s action is part of the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program, which determines acceptable substitutes for ozone-depleting substances such as Freon and other CFCs. The EPA is also seeking to address the global warming potential (GWP) of these chemicals. HFO-1234yf has about four times the GWP potential of carbon dioxide, but is still far below CFC-12, which has a GWP of 10,890.For additional information, visit www.epa.gov/ozone/snap. Questions may be directed to Stuart Gosswein.
More than one-sixth of the state of Utah would be off-limits to any form of motorized recreation if Congress approves H.R. 1925, “America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act of 2009.” SEMA submitted testimony to the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands in opposition to the bill to designate 9.4 million acres of land in Utah as “wilderness,” a label which bans mechanized activities, including off-roading, snowmobiling and mountain biking.
The issue is of keen interest to off-roaders and the SEMA-member companies that market off-road equipment.
Most of the 146 co-sponsors of the legislation represent areas east of the Rockies. At a recent House Subcommittee hearing, opposition to the bill was voiced from local residents and lawmakers representing the state. Concerns were also raised by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Director Robert Abbey who cautioned that current off-highway vehicle areas would be closed. The BLM manages all of the land subject to closure. Director Abbey also noted that the agency had not yet completed mapping or an analysis of each area to be designated as wilderness, which would allow the BLM to make informed recommendations on wilderness designations.
SEMA will continue to monitor Congressional action on this legislation. Read SEMA comments on Red Rock Wilderness Act.For additional details, contact Ethan Landesman at ethanl@sema.org.

Tony Schumacher NEWS NUGGETS
EYES SET ON VEGAS: SCHUMACHER, EDWARDS LOOK FOR STRONG ‘SIN CITY’ PERFORMANCES AND POSSIBLE CHAMPIONSHIPS: It was just one year ago that Top Fuel pilot Tony Schumacher entered Las Vegas with a 212-point lead over the rest of the competition. Schumacher needed only to qualify for the event to secure his fifth-consecutive and sixth overall NHRA Full Throttle world championship, and after taking the No. 1 qualifier of the event, he had done so. He went on to win the event and finish the season in Pomona with a second-round finish. Now, one year later, ‘The Sarge’ enters the ninth annual NHRA Las Vegas Nationals, October 29–November 1, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with the points lead yet again in the Top Fuel category, but he needs a lot more help and needs to go a lot further than just simply qualifying to lock up his seventh world championship.
Second-place driver Larry Dixon is 47 points behind the defending world champion and hopes his Countdown to 1 playoff success will continue in Las Vegas and into Pomona for the season-ending 45th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals, November 12–15, at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
One driver that is looking to secure his first world championship in Las Vegas is Pro Stock’s Mike Edwards. Similar to Schumacher's campaign in 2008, Edwards enters the Las Vegas event with a 128-point lead over the competition. For Edwards, the dream of earning his first NHRA Full Throttle world championship could become a reality if Lady Luck shines down on him in Las Vegas. Edwards definitely has the stats to prove it. Since the Countdown to 1 playoffs began, Edwards has won two of the last four events, and earned the No. 1 qualifier at every Countdown race. The two races that he didn’t win, he walked away with nothing lower than a semifinal appearance at each one.
He’s got the numbers, but second-place driver Greg Anderson has the experience at Las Vegas that just might be enough to keep the first-place driver from clinching. Anderson has six wins at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with three of those being at this event. For the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, a season of competition all comes down to the final two races, the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
NHRA VEGAS STYLE FAN FEST OCTOBER 29 ON FREMONT STREET: NHRA Vegas Style Fan Fest, the official kickoff to the 2009 NHRA Las Vegas Nationals, will take place Thursday, October 29, from 6:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. on Fremont Street in Las Vegas. NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series stars Antron Brown, Larry Dixon, Tony Pedregon, Tim Wilkerson, Bob Tasca, Jeff Arend, Jeg Coughlin, Allen Johnson, Michael Phillips, Bob Bode, David Hope and others will participate in the autograph session. The first 500 fans in the autograph line will receive a free special-edition poster featuring select drivers in the NHRA’s Countdown to 1 playoffs. The Fan Fest will take place on the 3rd Street section of Fremont Street near the Four Queens Hotel & Casino, Fitzgeralds Casino & Hotel and the Fremont Hotel & Casino. For more information, visit www.NHRA.com.
NHRA ANNOUNCES FAN RELIEF PROGRAM FOR AUTO CLUB FINALS: NHRA has announced that a limited number of $20 Race Fan Relief tickets—a savings of up to $29 per ticket—will be made available for the November 12–15 Auto Club NHRA Finals, the climactic race in NHRA’s six-race playoff, the Countdown to 1. The offer is available for advance purchase only on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to 1,500 tickets for each day of the four-day event. To purchase fan-relief tickets, enter the password “relief” on the appropriate Ticketmaster page, or call 800/884-NHRA (6472) and mention “fan-relief offer.”NHRA has also partnered with Ticketmaster to eliminate service and convenience fees on tickets purchased through Ticketmaster.com, via Ticketmaster phone lines or at Ticketmaster outlets. Fans purchasing tickets through Ticketmaster may pick up their tickets at the ticket office will-call window on race day or they may have their tickets delivered for a fee.
NHRA is also reaching out to families and fans in the military: Children 12 and younger accompanied by a paying adult will be admitted free on any of the four days of the event to general-admission areas, and NHRA is offering any active U.S. military personnel a free reserved-seat ticket on-site Friday, November 13. For tickets to the 45th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals, call 800/884-NHRA (6472) or visit Ticketmaster.com.

AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA NHRA FINALS, AUTO CLUB RACEWAY AT POMONA, NOVEMBER 12–15: The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series and Countdown to 1 playoffs come to an end at this historical event in sunny Southern California. Mike Edwards HE SAID, SHE SAID
KEEPING FOCUSED: Pro Stock driver Mike Edwards on the possibility of clinching his first NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing world championship in Las Vegas:“I’m thinking [championship], but I don’t have it yet. It’s close, but you’ve still got to stay focused. You’ve still got to keep your goals ahead. Those two Summit (drivers) are going to be burning the midnight oil to try and get back up there with me. I’m not going to count my chickens yet before they hatch. But I’m living my dream right now, and I’m real close to it.”
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
13: That’s the number of drivers who, after winning the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals, have gone on to win the world championship, since the addition of the race to the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing schedule in 2001.

"This annual event has become an essential activity for hundreds of media representatives and for our council members. The convenience of the hotel, along with the amenities and low rates, will ensure that the event continues to be a great success, and allow us to accomplish even more than ever before."
Details about the Radisson in Covina, California, are available at www.radisson.com/covinaca. The MPMC Media Trade Conference is a three-day event where manufacturers and media take part in prescheduled, private, sit-down meetings. Nowhere else can a manufacturer meet with editorial staff from so many news outlets, and nowhere else can the media gather so much technical and new product information at one time.
Additional details about the 2010 MPMC Media Trade Conference, taking place Tuesday–Thursday, January 19–21, 2010, are available at www.sema.org/mpmc-media-trade-conference.
