The SEMA Businesswomen’s Network: Access to Success

By Marla Moore and Nan Gelhard In 1993, a small group of the automotive specialty-equipment industry’s businesswomen transformed the SEMA Women’s League, a group catering to the wives of SEMA exhibitors, into the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN). They became a group focused on women’s success in the automotive aftermarket.

SBN Recognizes Contributions to Women

Each year, the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN) recognizes top individuals for their contributions to women in industry. The organization honored the winners of these awards at the 2012 SEMA Speed Networking Breakfast Powered by SBN on November 1, 2012, at the Las Vegas Hotel during the SEMA Show. The honorees for 2012 included Ford Motor Company, winner of the Athena Award; Doug Evans of Source Interlink Media, winner of the Mentor of the Year Award; and Lauren Fix of Classic Tube/Automotive Aspects, winner of the Woman of the Year Award.

Now Underway: SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women

For this year’s SEMA Show, Ford Motor Co. and SEMA have teamed up on a unique project: the SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women. Under the direction of the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN) and built entirely by SBN members, the project is designed to shine the light on women working in the automotive aftermarket and encourage more women to pursue careers in the industry.

Sponsored by the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN), the SEMA Networking Breakfast combined awards presentation and speed-networking event is the quickest way to meet peers, industry leaders and vendor associates who could be instrumental to your business or career. It is open to men and women from all segments of the industry, and it sells out a month before the SEMA Show. The SBN also gives special recognition at the breakfast to individuals or companies that are making extraordinary strides in the advancement of women and newcomers through three awards: 2012 SBN Athena, Mentor of the Year and Woman of the Year.

What started as a brief conversation at the 2010 SEMA Show has blossomed into the most ambitious project ever undertaken by the SBN. The goal: raise awareness of women in the industry while inspiring the next generation of women to pursue careers in the automotive aftermarket. SBN Select Committee member JoAnn Bortles had been part of an all-woman motorcycle-building team. She approached SBN Chair Marla Moore with the idea of an all-woman car build for charity.
